Not to want to wash my hair over a sink with a bloody sieve?!

Ok first world problems, but DH, DS, DD and I are staying with my elderly aunt and uncle. They have a massive house with modern bathrooms but DA had just told me that I cannot wash my shoulder length hair in the shower as it will block the drains, “But it’s ok as you can wash it over the sink and catch all the hair in a sieve”! FFS!!!

If I try to do this the water will go everywhere (the basin is tiny), the shampoo and conditioner will go in my eyes if I bend forward, and if I try to kneel backwards it will give me severe neck pain (and water everywhere again).

I normally wash my hair every three days which should have been last night, and we don’t go home until tomorrow. And we’re in the middle of nowhere without a car, though I’m going to have to insist on a diversion on our day trip to buy some dry shampoo.

I’m really annoyed she didn’t tell me this before hand as at least I could have washed my hair just before coming. And what about my 11 year old who has really long thick hair? Mercifully she’s not due to wash hair until tomorrow, but if it had needed washing sooner we’d be stuffed.

As you’re leaving tomorrow anyway, I’d just wait until we got home. (I’d probably have washed my hair before leaving home as well tbf.) I definitely wouldn’t want to lie to my hosts, though.

My mum has a 'rule' that no one is allowed to use hairspray inside the house, because it coats the floors etc, so we have to go out to the garage if we want to use hairspray.

I’d just have a shower as normal and remove the buckets.
You can tell them after if they actually were weird enough to ask that you either forgot, or googled and found out they aren’t in a drought area so you didn’t think it would matter too much. What can they do.

My dm is 91 and would think your aunt and uncle are crazy, It’s not an age thing.
Re bucket. Shower without bucket, fill bucket afterwards and pour on garden.

Bollocks to the loopy rules! You and your 11-year-old... get in the shower and wash your hair. If she who must be obeyed doesn't like it, tough!

My hair is quite thick and down to the bottom of my bum, but only a tiny amount actually ends up going down the plughole, and I wash it with liquid shampoo/conditioner every 2 days.

They have an en suite shower and I suspect/hope their bucket is better wedged in. But even so, you could definitely lose your balance and topple over.

I asked if they have a rubber bath mat but they don’t, so my DA has put an old tea towel under it 😵‍💫

there may not be a drought, if you are in scotland they dont even measure droughts
but there is a water shortage everywhere

Shower and wash hair as normal. Use a cotton bud to twist and pull out any hairs from the drain hole. I do that occasionally after DS has washed his very long hair in the main bathroom shower.

DBiL has refused to visit for the last 20 odd years since they made him and DSis stay in an unheated room one Xmas (it’s in the North of England and it gets bloody cold).

Obviously no one on here,has actually ever cleared out a u bend. You would be amazed how much hair collects. Our bathroom is only 10 years old. When dgd comes round washes her hair in the shower, which is over the bath,there is a lot of hair in the trap.

Has she got a bucket? If so, use that and when fished, pour the water through the sieve.

What a fuss about nothing. Place the bucket directly under the stream of water from the shower, stand safely outside of the bucket, wash your hair over the bucket and give your body a quick wash. Most of the shower water will fall in the bucket with only the water you use to rinse yourself going down the plug. They won't want dirty soapy water in the plants anyway. And you can use the sieve to scoop any hair out of the bucket afterwards.

It's super easy to prevent though. I shed like an Alsation, but I just have a hair trap thingy over the drain. No need for bizarre sieve and sink arrangements.

I don’t want to have a massive falling out about it but I’m already wondering how we can get out of coming here again - it’s become an annual summer trip with our kids (DA and DU have no kids of their own and not much in the way of wider family).

I don’t think I’ve washed my hair here for years - normally I bring the kids up, stay 1-2 nights then go home, and DA and DU bring down on the train a couple of days later. DD wouldn’t have washed her hair here either.
