I turned 40 in June. Life hasn't exactly gone the way I imagined it would in terms of my relationships.

I've been married three times and have two children. One child is with my first husband and the other is with my second husband. It wasn't the future I pictured for myself, and there were some difficult years, but I left those marriages for my own reasons and I'm much happier now. These days we co-parent well and everyone gets on well enough, so there's no drama and my children get to spend time with both parents and aren’t missing out on time with their fathers.

I've been seeing someone for almost a year now. He's 43, married once, divorced himself and has two children, so he completely understands the co-parenting side of life. Things have been going really well and are starting to feel quite serious.

Here's the bit I'm wondering about.
He knows my children have different fathers. He knows I've been married before. What he doesn't know is that I've actually been married three times. All I’ve said is ‘I’ve been married before and my children have different fathers’ then we both started talking about our children.

It's not that I've deliberately lied or tried to hide it. It just...never really came up. Early on it didn't seem relevant, and then as more time passed it somehow became more awkward to mention. Every time I've thought about bringing it up I've worried it'll sound as though I've been keeping a secret.

I know I need to tell him, and I will. I'm just wondering whether I've made this into a much bigger issue by leaving it so long.

You have no idea how long op was with any of them before marriage, why the marriage broke down, nothing. You just want to be superior because YOU'D never have 3 exes. Good for you. Good for op for leaving a relationship that didn't work and having faith that there's still love our there for her.

Oh I’ve got 3 exes - I just didn’t marry them 🙄

and if my current marriage fails for whatever reason I’d certainly not do it again

I guess because I haven’t seen him since we divorced and we don’t have children together he doesn’t really cross my mind. It doesn’t mean my partner and I don’t talk about anything.

Hmmmm…

Thanks for all the different perspectives I appreciate it.

We've spoken about it. I was completely honest with him. He now knows I’ve been married and divorced 3 times. Naturally, he had a lot of questions, and we talked through everything openly.

I've had a great deal of support from family, friends and professionals over the years. I was 22 when it happened. I've had time to process it, and I don't intend to spend the rest of my life defined by one chapter of my life or trapped in it. I'm incredibly grateful I didn't have children from that marriage, and even more grateful that I got out safely. Looking back, I can see that I was young, naïve and lacking the life experience I have now. I almost certainly wouldn't make the same decisions today, but there's very little to be gained from spending your life regretting choices that can't be undone. All I can do is learn from them.

Someone very close to him was in an abusive relationship and, tragically, didn't survive it. He told me that when we discussed my first marriage, so he understands that abuse is rarely as simple as people looking in from the outside often imagine. I was honest with him and he responded with compassion rather than judgment.

Being in an abusive marriage isn't something I introduce myself with. It isn't my identity. In truth there are long periods where it barely crosses my mind because it no longer defines who I am or how I live my life.

What has surprised me most is the amount of judgment. I'm genuinely pleased for people who've made consistently good decisions throughout their lives. I certainly haven't. I've made plenty of mistakes some with consequences that have shaped the course of my life. But every good decision and every bad one has brought me to where I am today, and despite my life looking very different from what I imagined, I can honestly say I'm happy.

I never imagined I'd have children with different fathers. That wasn't the future I pictured for myself, but it's the life I have, and I wouldn't change it now because changing it would mean changing my children. They are here, and I love them more than anything. My responsibility is to them. I would never knowingly put them in harm's way, and I've made sure they have access to whatever support they need because I recognise that the breakdown of their parents' relationships inevitably affects them.

All I can do is be the best mother I can be. Thankfully, they have wonderful, involved fathers who love them every bit as much as I do. I've never felt as though I've had to raise them alone. We communicate well, we co-parent respectfully, and our children have strong relationships with both sides of their families. They're surrounded by love, stability and opportunity, with parents who, although no longer together, remain completely committed to putting them first.

I don't claim to have lived a perfect life. I've made more than my fair share of mistakes, and I've experienced things I wouldn't wish on anyone. My life has been far from conventional. But I refuse to be shamed for surviving difficult circumstances, learning from poor decisions, and building a life that is healthy, peaceful and fulfilling.

If I'm honest, there are many things I once wished had turned out differently. I would have liked all of my children to have the same father. I would have liked to finish medical school the first time instead of dropping out and finding my way back years later if if have stuck to it I could have completed my surgical training by now and been preparing to be surgeon by now.I've now been a doctor for eight years, and had life unfolded differently I might have reached that point much earlier. There are opportunities I lost, years I can't get back, and decisions I made that I now see with the benefit of hindsight.

But hindsight is a luxury that only exists because you have lived through the experience. Those years also gave me resilience, perspective and an appreciation for life that I don't think I would otherwise have developed. In many ways, they've made me a better doctor, a more compassionate person and, I hope, a better mother.

I was fortunate to have an incredibly privileged upbringing. I attended a good independent school, the world was my oyster really and had parents who would have done almost anything for me. Maybe that’s why I had the experiences I did. For a long time I didn't truly appreciate how fortunate I was. Then my life unravelled, largely because of my own decisions as well as circumstances I couldn't control, and I felt as though I'd become a disappointment to the people who had invested so much in me.

They never made me feel that way. If anything they did the opposite. Through every poor decision, every setback and every difficult period, my parents, my siblings, friends etc they loved me unconditionally. Whenever I fell, they helped me back to my feet. Looking back, that's one of the greatest privileges I've ever had not the education or the financial security, but knowing that no matter how badly I got things wrong, there were people who never stopped believing I could rebuild my life and I did.

Edited

Well done OP he sounds lovely. I know the feeling of leaving telling someone something until it becomes a bit late and then a bit too late. Hopefully this will lead to a new level of honesty between you both.

What an awful thread, I can't believe the grilling and judgement you have received here, it's shameful. I actually can't believe that you stuck around to give us the update.

I'm genuinely pleased you've had a happy marriage and chose not to marry your exes. We all have different lives and different experiences. We are all different people with different views of how we see the world, with different experiences that affect our decisions and decisions I make others might not make and that’s alright. I am not forcing anyone to be like me at all.

My marriages haven't all worked out but I'll never regret marrying the fathers of my children because without those relationships, I wouldn't have the children I have today. For me, that's something I'll always be grateful for.

Not everyone gets every decision right. I certainly haven't. I've made mistakes, and with hindsight there are things I would have done differently. But there's little point spending years dwelling on choices that can't be undone.

Those decisions, for better or worse, led me to becoming a mum, and I wouldn't change that for anything. Some of the proudest and happiest moments of my life have been because of my children, and if I had to choose again knowing where I'd end up, I'd still choose them every time.

Thank you🤗He is very lovely and I hope we can be together long term.

I think people on here seem to have had great lives and made the correct decisions every time and honestly good for them all. My situation isn’t something I went out of my way to be in, could I have made better decisions, yes but I did not. My life has worked out in the end and I’m glad I’ve had the experiences I’ve had. I have better perspective and can be more understanding of people’s experiences and the choices they have made regardless of whether they’re good choices or not everyone had their reasons.

Not everyone suits marriage. Ive been married and divorced three times and I realised marriage made me feel trapped. I wont ever be getting married again.
My husbands turned into lazy cocklodgers who wanted a maid as soon as they got the ring on my finger. They were fine in the two/three year run up to the wedding.
They wouldnt have liked it if Id gone from cute and loving to a lazy, slob who didnt work.
By all means date this man but you dont need to marry him.

I’m only having thoughts about telling him because we went out for dinner with friends and the topic of marriage came about. I said I don’t see myself getting married till my children are 16-18 essentially till they’re adults. I’m ashamed that I’m 40 and been married three times, 3 failed marriages isn’t great

Please don’t feel ashamed. The marriages weren’t working, for whatever reason, and the right thing to do was not be in them.

We will take things as they come. We both have children similar ages marriage is certainly not on the card anytime soon. I am not against marriages just because mine didn’t work out. I actually really liked being married for a time and have my reasons for why things didn’t work out with the father of my eldest or the father of my youngest.

OP, just as a warning. You went into your other marriages thinking they were the one and it would last forever.

If you get married again and it doesn't work out, you could be on your FOURTH divorce before you are 50.

Why are you warning me on something I know. I like to think it’s my life and I make my own choices on what to do.

My grandma was married 4 times before 50 and her last marriage lasted till he passed away then she passed away but it was 50 yrs of marriage.

This thread is awful because some posters are judgemental but also because the OP is so touchy and cross with everyone.

Yes, you were at fault, OP, for not being honest in the first place.
Now apparently you have been and everything is fine.
I think this thread is best left to just die a natural death now.

Bunionbabe · 01/08/2026 22:45

OP I think you need to stop apologising, feeling ashamed and justifying your choices to a bunch of strangers on an online platform. Seriously, stop reading, posting and letting other people question your decisions. It's your life it doesn't matter what others think. You won't get any worthwhile advice on here.

This makes total sense- I would absolutely judge someone who put their child through two divorces and then chose to get married again.

Well as op said this

I've been married three times and have two children. One child is with my first husband and the other is with my second husband.

im guessing that the 3rd dh was the last one with no kids so yes op married another man after 2 divorces with 2 different dads

but that’s just my way of reading it. Maybe im misreading

but as op seems reluctant to confirm ….

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/08/2026 00:18

Three marriages is excessive. Just don't get married again.

Why what happened? Also why can’t I what ?

When my children are adults I think if I’m still with my partner now it’ll be okay to get married. We’ve discussed our opinions on marriages and we have similar views in terms of marriages.

How did it not come up during those discussions op?

TBH I don't think a third will sink it if two hasn't put him off.

It worked for Elizabeth Taylor. I’m not sure why you should feel ashamed. I don’t get the impression that men who have 3 kids to 3 women and wasn’t married to any of them feel any shame. It’s just part of your story. I think shame of divorce is what keeps lot of women in bad marriages.

The kids often have things to say about it when they grow up, though.

Absolutely you can and you should. But you have put your life up for discussion in an online forum, so it's a bit naive not to expect people to chime in with their opinion.

I'll just say that, if I was invited to a friend or family member's 4th marriage, my first thought would be "there we go again". And I'm sure there would be plenty of banter in that wedding, especially when listening to the vows and the "love of my life" and "together for ever" platitudes.

I was married once, and breaking "eternal vows" once was enough for me to not consider doing it again. But you do you, OP. It's your life.

thats what I thought - looks like a 4th marriage could be on the cards 😂 completely defies the whole point of marriage. 2 failed marriages … unlucky. 3 is the point where you need to just bloody stop it and 4 is taking the piss entirely

At what point are you going to give up on the idea of marriage op? Divorce number 6?

This thread is awful sorry.

There are so many threads on here from women in unhealthy / unhappy relationships and the advice is almost always to leave. Certainly in the case of abuse the advice is to leave. Well OP did leave and there's loads of posters implying she just got bored and berating her for it.

I'm glad your partner was understanding OP.

I know I need to tell him, and I will. I'm just wondering whether I've made this into a much bigger issue by leaving it so long.

The lack of communication or even care to get to know each other after a year is quite sad. You were definitely keeping it from him, whether you like to admit it to yourself or not.
