Is this a ‘Soft life’

Wellthatwasabrupt · 29/07/2026 19:25

And would you want it?

Has Dh, one young Dc and dogs, lives overseas by the beach and countryside, nice house with pool and sea views.
Works 6 hours per week from home. Does all drop offs and pick ups, food shop, dinners, majority to do with Dc and sorting bills. Has a cleaner.
Dh works Mon-Fri -finishes 4.30, no one works weekends.
Days are free based around Dc school drops, coffee with friends, Pilates, yoga, studying or reading if you like, watching Netflix all day if you like, shopping, beach, pool, garden

Would you call this a soft life? Would you like it, be honest?

It is not the life for me

Infact, I have actively chosen another sort of life

It seems this person is what I call a "homebody", someone who enjoys being at home.

TheJuryIsOut · 31/07/2026 18:56

I'd love that, if I didn't have to work I'd never do another hours work in my life.

Wellthatwasabrupt · 31/07/2026 17:36

Have you read the posts? Achieved very little aside from watching Netflix?
Educated to master’s level, important and needed career for society…mother?!

Seriously - what is the point of your post? You only want people to validate your view. And, as others have pointed out, if you need validation then the likelihood is either a) you’re not actually happy or b) are seriously smug. It’s beyond tedious.

Let’s just all agree OP lives the most blissful perfect life. Cos that’s all she wants to hear.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · 31/07/2026 19:02

You seem so annoyed when people say they wouldn't want your life. People are allowed to think differently to you you know.

No, mainly because it sounds boring after more than a couple of weeks. Where’s the intellectual stimulation? I enjoy my professional life, I like being a subject matter expert and there’s a great freedom in being able to buy yourself what you want.

Also, she’s not setting a good example of a strong work ethic for the child.

Also, what happens if the husband dies, leaves, becomes abusive, becomes incapacitated, has an affair?

Also, retirement is expensive. She’s foolish not to save for old age.

She might not need intellectual stimulation. I don't. I'm not clever. Most of my working life has been spent doing mindless, repetitive things.
We don't all need intellectual stimulation because we aren't all bright sparks.

If you are more intelligent and have a smart career, I can totally see why this life would be unfulfilling. I have friends like that. I admire their abilities, but don't envy their need to be stimulated all the time.

Itsalittlebitwarm · 31/07/2026 19:34

Well it's not a hard life so absolutely sounds like a soft life!

Some people have them, usually the more wealthy and can't relate to us other folks so are also generally not very worldly or interesting 🤔

What do you mean by ‘being stimulated all the time’?

Hotsummer2026 · 31/07/2026 19:48

It does sound very nice , full of potential and potentially low stress. But how that life actually FEELS depends on the person living it . Are they personally fulfilled? Does that life represent the pinnacle of all their efforts? Is this the life they really want? How do they feel about their life when they wake in the early hours and really think about it ?
Are they happy with their relationships and their own personal achievements in life? It all really depends on the internal life and what is happening there . The external life is really just a book cover ..

Winser · 31/07/2026 19:55

I hate cryptic posts.

If a soft life means an easy life, then yes it’s incredibly easy. Def not contributing much to the bigger world. But if it works for you, that’s great. I would not swap for a million pounds though.

What do you mean by ‘being stimulated all the time’?

I mean needing to be doing something that is mentally stimulating, as indicated by the post I was responding to. I genuinely don't need it.

lordbaddingham · 31/07/2026 20:07

I would have to work more. Annoyingly as I wish I could live like this, it sounds amazing. But I couldn't.

What are you doing with your masters? Having a masters only benefits you unless you're actually using it so no societal contribution there. And you're only working 6 hours so very limited societal contribution there. And being a mother? Yes, most us on 'mumsnet' are mothers. So that's hardly an achievement!

It's a bit odd to ask people to critique your lifestyle then object to people critiquing it.

That's likely because OP is the husband.

Inevergotthatfar · 31/07/2026 20:11

Yes it's a soft life, and no I wouldn't want to do it myself as I enjoy working. But different strokes for different folks and all that. There's nothing wrong with it if everyone in the family is happy with the arrangement.

Yes I think you're right. It's a weird thread. Op has posted loads but not actually said anything.

Yes. I’ve posted this a few times so far but I think OP is pissed off because his wife doesn’t like the life he’s built for her & he hoped we’d all say how wonderful it sounded.

shockmethen · 31/07/2026 21:00

parietal · 29/07/2026 19:30

Sounds very chill but I’d get bored. I’d need more work or volunteering or massive amounts of gardening or some project to keep occupied.

Seeing that the options listed are ‘if you like’ it doesn’t appear that you couldn’t do volunteering if that what you like.

cosimarama · 31/07/2026 21:20

friedaklein · 29/07/2026 19:38

I have had that life and I didn't like it. I like working out of the house and more equal parenting.

Isn’t ‘soft life’ surely just the opposite of ‘hard life’?

These threads Ialways bring out petty sneering from people who seem unable to value themselves beyond being an ambitious worker. Most probably in jobs that take up vast amounts of their life making someonei else money.

Does it matter if you're making someone else money if you're also making money for yourself?

@friedaklein sorry didn’t mean to quote you there.

Why not contributing much to the bigger world though

You are not going to get everyone to agree that your wife has a fabulous life. Let it go already!

Why not contributing much to the bigger world though

We are now over 48 hours into this thread and you still are just dismissing anyone who says they wouldn’t like this life and refusing to answer any questions about your role in this. Boring.

OutOfTheOtherSide · 31/07/2026 21:46

Does it matter if you're making someone else money if you're also making money for yourself?

I think it matters from a bigger picture perspective in the context of this thread. When being a replaceable cog in someone else’s machine is deemed to be a superior use of time to someone who doesn’t have to do that.
