I’m hosting a barbecue for four other people, so five in total, next Saturday evening.

I know I could do the usual sausages and burgers, but for people who do a bit more, what would you do? No vegans or vegetarians. I don’t think salads would be eaten or at least very little.

I’ve got a coal barbecue and I am hosting alone, partner is not invited coming.

How about chicken skewers? Chunks of chicken along with baby tomatoes, slices of pepper, and chunks of onion.

Loulou4022 · 28/07/2026 15:25

also been years since I’ve done them but baby potatoes wrapped in foil bundles with grain mustard and honey 😋

snoopyfanaccountant · 28/07/2026 15:29

Wrap chicken strips in bacon and stick them on a skewer.
Meatballs with cherry tomatoes on skewers.
Slices of fresh pineapple.
Marinated pork steaks.

karmakameleon · 28/07/2026 15:30

My most regular not burger not sausages bbq option is to go Indian.

I bbq tandoori chicken and sheesh kebabs. I serve with naan from our local bakery, a raita and a simple tomato cucumber kachumber salad.

ToadRage · 28/07/2026 15:32

My husband makes these lovely beef teriyaki skewers. He marinades the beef in teriyaki sauce over night, then skewers the chunks of beef with mushrooms and peppers. They're so nice.

Ablondiebutagoody · 28/07/2026 15:33

I always keep it simple on the bbq. Thick cut rib-eye steaks. More salt than is healthy, like a flat teaspoon each side (table not fancy rock salt or it goes crusty). Cook rare. Slice thinly and a squeeze of lime juice.

We just keep these coming and graze all evening. People take a few and eat them with rice, salad, beans, salsa etc.

A dozen chicken hearts on wooden skewers also good.

Silverbirchleaf · 28/07/2026 15:35

Corn on the cob - we usually spread with butter, and wrap in silver foil and put on the barbecue.

watermelon - you can sear this on the barbecue also

That sounds lush. Does he use braising steak? It’s a bit more tender x

LoafofSellotape · 28/07/2026 15:36

Boneless skinless chicken thighs drizzled with olive oil ,salt and pepper and dried minced herbs- about 8 mins each side.

This poster from two years ago asked the same question (but in Food/Recipes, where ironically they got 10x more replies instead of "posting for traffic")

No idea. I don't get involved in my husbands cooking. I just eat it.

Get a grip.

That's a funny way to say "thank you".

And if you don't peruse those links, then I can't help you. 💅

I’ll battle on without your help then I suppose.

Thank you to the posters who’ve given me some great suggestions. Definitely going to do the steak, corn on the cob and the teriyaki skewers.

Classics. Lamb skewers and chicken skewers are so easy to handle and do. We put veg on chicken ones (never the lamb). Chicken usually has either lemon and harrisa marinade or shawarma one.
Lamb hearts are nice, you can buy in tesco.
Arayes. Easy to do, always hit the spot for me

I absolutely love having a homemade coleslaw and a homemade bbq relish (cook onions in a pan until totally caramelised, add tomato and loads of spices … leave it for a few days).

This doesn’t count as salad and goes really well - usually I do plain rice and new potatoes.

If you can’t be bothered with that then I recommend pork ribs in a dry rub of 1tbs brown sugar, 2 tsp salt, 1 tsp five spice, 1tsp dried garlic, 1/2tsp pepper, 1/2 tsp dried ginger, dried chilli flakes. Toss the ribs in sesame and olive oil, coat in the rub, cook slowly to render the fat. You can baste with a mix of soy sauce and honey. Really easy and so tasty.

pinck · 28/07/2026 15:55

You mean grilling. If you were actually barbecuing, I’d suggest slow-cook ribs, brisket, or pulled pork for hours over smoke. If you’re just throwing stuff over hot coals, make hamburgers or whatever ... nobody cares.

Ooo yes! A homemade coleslaw! Great shout.

A barbecue is just a meal cooked on an open fire outdoors. If you’re in the UK.

If you’re in Texas or the like with its cultural differences between barbecues and grills then fair enough. If you’re in East Anglia then it’s just a barbecue.

In Europe bbquing is generally used for cooking on grill/bbq no matter what lenght of time. No need to be snotty fot no good reason

murasaki · 28/07/2026 16:11

I like skewers with chunks of red onion, halloumi and sometimes chorizo too.

Leeds2 · 28/07/2026 16:16

Large flat mushrooms filled with breadcrumbs and garlic, wrap in tin foil and cook. These can be bought ready prepared in Sainsbury’s! They also do stuffed red peppers, which are nice.
Salmon works well too, wrapped in tin foil and with a bit of black pepper and lemon juice.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 28/07/2026 16:17

Skewers are a good idea. I prefer home made burgers too, so easy to do. Either jacket potatoes or potato salad. My mum and I do a German one which is new baby potatoes peeled, French dressing and onions (spring?) maybe chives.

muddlingthrou · 28/07/2026 16:50

The best thing I’ve ever made is a slow cooked brisket finished off on the bbq. I also love prawns with shells on (get the biggest ones you can!) served with homemade romesco sauce. Halloumi tossed in oil and seasonings is my final suggestion. I’m hungry now!
