To ask what year your car is?

Mine is a 2012 hatchback, I wanted something cheap, reliable, easy to run and cheap repair costs and I'm happy with what I've got. I seem to be in a friend circle with nothing older than 2020 which is tough where they all fawn over each other's car but I've made the correct choice for me. Which is yours?

One is 2010, the other is 2008. The 2010 car has 169,000 miles on the clock and still drives and handles like it did when it was new.

2016, I expect to get at least another 5 years out of it hopefully more.

will keep both of them until not economical to repair but ime of running cars into the ground as long as you keep them serviced they don’t cost a lot to keep on the road until something major happens.

’Fawn over each others car’? Goodness. Mines 2020. Bought in March of that year and got a great deal as they knew they were going to be in lockdown and needed to shift as many as they could!

One is 2018, the other is 1979 😊

2009 ..I pray every time the MOT is due !

2002!!! With 261,000 miles in the clock! I’ve owned it since 2006! The paintwork is looking a bit worse for wear as the top coat is peeling in places but I still love driving it even though it’s leaks in the wet 🤦🏻‍♀️ booked in to get the aircon fixed in a couple of weeks!

2016. Planning to get a slightly bigger van next year and will be looking for 2015 or slightly older to avoid all the ad blue issues I’ve had on this one!

2019, I bought a small second hand EV a few years ago to reduce day to day running costs. I don't care about cars at all, car decisions are made on a purely practical basis. I hope not to have to change my car for quite a few years.

We have just changed our 2007 car for a 2025. The old one was still running perfectly fine but no longer big enough for our growing family. Felt a shame to get rid as it was cheap and reliable, even if no air con! Its a shame there has been a trend towards fancy cars on finance, lots of cars last perfectly well if they are looked after.

2015 and 2010 we'll keep them both until uneconomical to repair. Nearly everyone we know has much newer cars. Do we care? Definitely not! They both do their job just fine. One was bought outright from new, one was 3 years old and also bought outright

(VW Golf) 2019. Went up this year from something made in 2010. Wouldn’t want newer as even this is too high tech for me 😂.

Modern cars bore me to be honest. I do more mileage per year in the cars from the 1990's than my 2011 Mercedes...!

2016 campervan and 2017 car. Both over 100k miles and no plans to replace either. Have had to spend a little on repairs/ maintenance for both this year, but still significantly less than a couple of months lease/ finance/ PCP.

Its my sons mobilty car hes severly autistic will never be able to drive himsef and we use it as the family car its a 25 plate.

YABU to care what age other people's cars are. Do what works for you. I currently have a small 19 plate petrol engined car that I bought when it was 2 years old and the current plan is to keep it for another 5-10 years when I've had my money's worth and I'm hoping there will be a good offer to trade it in against a newish electric one, which will hopefully last me until I'm no longer driving.

Before this one i had a 15 plate that had 100,000 miles on the clock and it died. I'd still have it if it hadn't.

Presumably this is simply the difference between those who can buy outright and those who buy on lease or PCP, which are usually new or nearly new cars. I know that buying outright is cheaper in the long run, but if you don't have savings or struggle to get a decent loan it just isn't an option. Especially if you need a bigger car (eg kids)

My car is 2018 and I'll be replacing it in a year or two but that's only because I do 12k a year so cars don't last me that long before they start becoming unreliable!

I have no intention of replacing it until it’s beyond repair or I’m advised not to waste the money on it.

Most people I know who have “new” cars have them on lease and will never actually own them, they’re just renting them!

Why does it matter though? You have the car you want, which suits your needs. I'm sure there's things you value more highly than other people do because that's just how it goes.

Edited to add I've never owned an SUV or EV, always buy cars outright and opt for a car payment instead of company car as they're mostly EVs now.

Mine dates back to 2008! I really don't get the love for new cars, generally speaking, and especially not when people boast about them. Tbh I find modern cars overly complicated in lots of ways and am not in any hurry to upgrade, even though newer cars do have some features I'd quite like my car to have.

Mine is 2019. I prefer to buy outright at 2-3 years old and sell at 6-7 years old. Probably due a change soon but I actually really like my current car so I’ll probably keep it a year or two more.

I live on a tight lane where there’s lots of driving in hedges to let others past so a shiny new car would be wasted on me!

Same as a few previous posters, we tend to buy mine & husbands cars when they are a few years old, around the 5 year mark & just keep them running for as long as possible.

Our sons car we bought a bit older to start with, it's only a very small run around car, will hopefully last long enough to get him through uni & then pass down to his brother to learn to drive in & have for when he is at uni.

Both mine & my husbands cars have ticked over the 100,00 mark now & are thankfully both still going strong.

Some people are car people, some aren't. Some people are status obsessed (big house, good postcode, flash car, designer labels), others couldn't give a fuck.

I'm the second. As are my friends. Some of them have better cars than me. If they started banging on about cars / personalised plates / designer labels I wouldn't be friends with them. Too many differences between us.
