My boyfriend’s mum still has a tracker on his phone… he’s 31

I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for just under a year and, overall, he’s lovely. Kind, funny, has a good job, owns his own place. I genuinely thought I’d found one of the good ones. Then something happened last weekend that has completely thrown me.

We were out for dinner about 45 minutes from where we live when his phone rang. He glanced at it, sighed and said, “It’s Mum.”
He answered and the first thing she said was, “Why are you in Oxford? I thought you were just going into town.”

I laughed because I assumed she’d seen a photo on social media or something. But after he hung up I asked how she knew where we were. He looked at me as if it was completely normal and said, “Oh, she can see my location.” I asked if he’d shared it with her because we were meeting up afterwards “No,” he said. “She’s always had it. Apparently she set it up years ago “for safety” when he first moved away from home, and neither of them has ever turned it off.
I said that was unusual for a 31 year old man. He shrugged and said, “It makes her happy.”

The next morning we decided to drive to the coast on a whim. About halfway there his phone buzzed. His mum had texted: “Didn’t realise you liked Brighton. Weather’s nicer where you are than here.” An hour later another message: “You’re parked a long way from the seafront.” Then “Are you staying overnight? I hope you’ve booked somewhere decent.”

When we got back to the hotel, he admitted she checks his location “a few times a day”. He laughed and said she gets worried if he stays in one place for too long because she wonders if he’s been in an accident.

He confessed she also has alerts set up so she gets notified when he arrives at work and when he gets home. Apparently she texted him once asking why he’d left work at 2pm.
He’d gone to the dentist. Then I found out she’s rung him before because she saw he was at a retail park and wanted him to pop into M&S for her.

A couple of days ago I was at his flat when the doorbell rang. His mum had popped round completely unannounced. When he asked why she’d come over she said “Well, your location said you were home and you hadn’t replied to my text.” She genuinely couldn’t understand why that might be crossing a line.

My boyfriend insists it’s harmless, says she’s just anxious, and thinks I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. He says, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, why does it matter if she knows where I am?” I’ve tried explaining that it’s not about hiding anything and that it’s about having some privacy and boundaries as an adult.

Then yesterday, he casually asked if I’d be willing to share my location with him permanently because “it would make things easier.” When I asked why, he admitted his mum had suggested it so she’d know where both of us were if we were together.

AIBU to think this is completely bizarre, or is this more common than I realise?

She genuinely couldn’t understand why that might be crossing a line.

But it's not crossing a line. He's perfectly comfortable with it. You've decided you'd like to impose your boundaries on him. THAT'S crossing a line.

Perfectly reasonable boundaries that the man or woman on the Clapham Omnibus wouldn’t put up with

Two's company, three's a crowd.

As I've said before on these threads, I, DH and our adult, long since left home, children all have each other on Find my Friends and find it convenient (are they nearly here yet?) and nice to be able to see what's happening (oh, DD's in Spain! I'd forgotten she was on holiday this week!)

The difference is we all know, all agree, and would never ever abuse it to question why someone was somewhere in an intrusive way. Fair enough for those who don't want to do it, I completely see why, and I would be very wary of the behaviour of this possible future MIL if I were the OP. But not everyone who does this is a controlling nutter!

I think tracking came too late for me! It would have been so useful for when DD was in her exploration backpack era, mostly SE Asia. Calls like “mum where is my hotel?” And “there are dogs in the yard in front of me, how do I get round?”. She survived but I remain anxious 😬.

I would not dream of asking about setting up now. They have partners. It would be creepy.

LadyLaundry · 26/07/2026 20:48

Sharing location is one thing, using or acting on the information is a breach of boundaries with a 31 year old man with no identified need for such close monitoring. That’s an extraordinary level of entitlement and intrusion.

He sounds fine with it. I’d move on if you’re not. (And I wouldn't be either.)

grrrlatrix · 26/07/2026 20:50

We all share locations in my family, but nobody would track them obsessively and phone people up to talk about it!

MrsHeeler · 26/07/2026 20:57

I wouldn’t run just yet.
The sharing location is fine for him & his mum.
You don’t need to share yours with her though.
She sounds like she needs a daily check in with her son & he seems ok with that. Maybe he should talk to her about boundaries especially if he wants to continue a relationship with you and he should also get help for her anxiety issues.

Wheresthebeach · 26/07/2026 21:01

She’s obsessively tracking him and inserting herself in his life. Just no. Having the tracking is fine but not the constant contacts.

Laura95167 · 26/07/2026 21:08

I dont think the location sharing is weird. By itself i mean. My mum can see mine.. tbh I feel better knowing if God forbid something happened she would have info to find me get me help. My friends with teenage children have theirs and check occasionally when theyre out late and on their way home (but dont nag at them about it)

Whats weird is checking it incessantly and calling him out on where he is, and checking up on him. Absolutely do not share yours with her. Shes batshit.

MargaretMeldrew · 26/07/2026 21:27

How very strange. In a relationship for almost a year with absolutely no knowledge that her boyfriend’s mum could track his location. Then all of a sudden, in the space of a couple of days, his mum is contacting him left, right and centre, crossing all sorts of boundaries and acting like a mad stalker. Again, how very strange …

OP would have been back by now if this was real

YowieeF · 26/07/2026 21:40

Is he 11?
This is not right and needs to stop, unless you’re waiting for a bigger red flag?

Fabulosa83 · 26/07/2026 21:40

Sherararara · 25/07/2026 12:22

Tracking for emergency use is something. Here it’s obvious she spends her day monitoring his every move. That’s nuts. I would insist he turn it off there and then and if he doesn’t dump him. He needs to grow up and she needs to cut the cord.

Edited

Totally agree with this. The mother is so overbearing and slightly nuts if I’m honest.
I have ‘find My’ on iPhone and share my location with my siblings, never do they ask me why I am in a certain place.. once my sister text to ask if I was ok because I was in the hospital at 10pm (clearly an emergency) my son broke his Aron at football training. But we never invade each others privacy it’s more for safety (girls nights out etc).

It wouldn’t be an issue if she had the location but wasn’t stalking him and questioning him constantly. That is definitely a step too far!

time to cut the apron strings. Perhaps if he explains the intrusion in his privacy, unless he likes it! Cringe!

Lemonyyy · 26/07/2026 21:43

I once shared my location on find my friends with my MIL, we were on holiday and it was to make it easier to coordinate meeting up etc. All good.

When we got home I turned it off and a few days later got a message asking why! Surely the fact that you were clearly ready to have a nosy at me proves my point...

She's a bored housewife though, and constantly updates us on the minutiae of her life and that of her siblings, cousins, friends. She clearly wants some sort of drama or gossip out of it. It sounds like in the ops case it's more to do with anxiety and enmeshment, which sounds much harder to handle!

Coconutter24 · 26/07/2026 21:46

If you shared your location with him how would his mum also know where you were? Surely you’d have to share it with her? I would suspect he’s as batshit as she is and he wants to track you

Phoenixfire1988 · 26/07/2026 21:48

Girl FUCKING RUN !!!!!!! Dump his arse and make it clear no mature woman would ever settle for a man who not only shares his location with his mother but wants his girlfriend to aswell it needs to be clear thats not even a little bit normal

OldScribbler · 26/07/2026 21:49

It’s peculiar. You should ask if he intends to remain tied to his mother’s apron or would prefer you.

Phoenixfire1988 · 26/07/2026 21:51

For the record I have 6 sons I wouldn't even DARE 🫠

MermaidMummy06 · 26/07/2026 22:06

It's more common now. But it's how you use it, I think. Emergencies, or seeing how far away someone is, I think fine. Tracking, no. That's crazy invasive & controlling.

If she had the knowledge, MIL would have done it to DH. She was controlling, and would call constantly, or drop in unannounced if given the opportunity.

These days, I'd run if a man was sharing this much info. 'To keep her happy' is the red flag here. This is his mantra, and you'll always be fighting it as he'll give in to her for an easy life, and sacrifice you in the process.

Jenasaurus · 26/07/2026 22:09

2differenttypesofpeople · 25/07/2026 12:12

It's weird that she's always ringing him up and questioning him about his where abouts 😅

But actually just having each other on the app isn't too odd. Even at his age. I'm in my 30's and me / my friend / all our children ( one of hers is in his 20's ) are all on an app ( life360 ) and we can all see each others locations

I agree, I have this in reverse though, I am 61 and have 3 grown up children in their 30s, my eldest has my location on his phone and often calls if he sees I have gone out somewhere different, (I dont even know how to use it :) On Saturday, I had a glass of wine at lunchtime and dozed off, then woke up to see 2 of my 3 children plus their partners in my room, I hadnt replied to their texts from 4pm (it was 8pm) and they decided I had fallen down the stairs.

InterestedDad37 · 26/07/2026 22:11

If he can see his mum's location on his phone, does it show as a massive red flag? 🚩

yep

Calendulaaria · 26/07/2026 22:24

Just to be clear, this is fucking insane

Victoria838383 · 26/07/2026 22:26

Run for your life!! He will put her feelings before yours and she will never stay out of your life, she is the woman in his life and you will be second best. Can you imagine if you had kids (especially a boy) how overbearing she would be. It’s early enough to run… or tell him it’s no normal and can he tell her things are changing, sounds like he wants to keep her happy… more than you.

Tracking you?!?! Him or her? She wants to watch where you are and speak to him about it… ‘did you know she stopped here?’ Couple should have permanent trackers it erodes trust and takes your independence away, you start looking at it more and more then you’ll be doing what his mum wants.

ask him to cut it off, if my boyfriend was speaking to his mum that often I’d cut and run

x

Victoria838383 · 26/07/2026 22:32

Just read some posts, if you share locations with your parents for emergency ire and they don’t really look at it fair enough, you go awol for days you can share with police.

but you need to know they really don’t even look at it unless there’s a problem, your running late for a family dinner and you make an excuse but they have watched you come out of a pub 😆😆.

the first time the mum asked why I was somewhere based on the tracker that thing would have been shut down! This is actually the most disturbing thing I’ve heard in a while… everybody loves Raymond would love this 😆

Dawnintheageofaquariams · 26/07/2026 23:01

Is him actually a corpse in an attic?
