Why is there no solution to the 'used-once-but-not-dirty' clothes pile?

Hicc · 21/07/2026 17:59

We all have this, don't we? A pile of clothes on a chair in the bedroom that aren't dirty enough to wash but not clean enough to go back in the wardrobe.

Mine sit on a chair looking untidy.

Try as I might, I can't find a solution. Blanket ladders aren't sturdy enough to put up with daily use, chairs take up a lot of space, hooks don't work for two people's worth of clothes.

AIBU for being frustrated there is not a magical solution to this? Or is there one that is being gate-kept by the eternally tidy and house proud crew?

I assume when people say they only wear clothes once, they don't mean they put the items in the wash on their own and run the machine every day. I assume they have enough clothes to wear a different outfit 7 days a week, put the worn clothes in the wash basket and do an actual wash when they have a full load.

Of course, if you are a family of four doing that, you'll have a full load most days, but it won't be a question of washing the same outfits every day. I think some of you are imagining people washing one set of clothes every day so it's clean for the next day.

That doesn’t invalidate anything I said.

Washing everything after one wear is bad enough even if you run a full load every time.
Also, if you have a household where everyone only wears stuff once, the loads get full pretty quickly.

Why doesn't it? You assume that individual items are going to be washed more frequently, which isn't good for clothes or the environment. Actually, though, I wear clothes at least two days running, more in winter, but I don't have that many clothes to rotate. So my clothes will actually get washed more than someone with 14 day's worth of different outfits, some of which might sit in the wash basket for two weeks. They aren't necessarily washing clothes any more than I do, because they have enough clothes not to need to. My sister used to wear once, then wash. Some items would be in her wash basket for a month. She didn't actually do that much more washing than I did. She simply had more clothes to wear between washes.

hooverthefloor · 22/07/2026 23:06

I have one of these behind my door (I've used it for about 4 years, and it hasn't shown any signs of not being sturdy enough): https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/vilto-towel-stand-birch-00344451/

But my bedroom is tiny. If you had more space, something like this could work and be multifunctional: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/ragrund-towel-rack-chair-bamboo-90253074/

Or a valet stand, as others have said.

I hang them back in the wardrobe on the left hand side. Not sure what you think they will do wrong in there

More likely to get moths if worn clothes are put back in the wardrobe. Anyone who has ever had to deal with a moth infestation will testify to this! Once youve had moths, life can revolve around keeping clothes clean and I agree with the OP this is challenging as cant realistically wash every item, every time it’s worn!

Literally no one is imagining this.

Hang the clothes inside out in the wardrobe in a section of worn clothes. At the end of each season wash and iron all of them for the following year.

Each item being washed after one wear is obviously being washed more often than if it was washed after two, three or more wears. How can you not get that? 🤷‍♀️

Are you mad??!!! They'll have a wild party and lead the clean clothes astray.

Soosi · 23/07/2026 00:21

I hang on the wardrobe door overnight and then put them in the wardrobe next morning.

I've explained that. They've got more clothes. They just sit in the wash basket longer. You are assuming they empty the wash basket several times a week just because they change clothes every day. I even gave the example of an instance from my own experience.

In addition to my last reply, I'll break it down to help you understand.
Let's say I have seven shirts and seven pairs of trousers. Another person has 16 shirts and trousers. I wear mine for two or three days. She wears hers once.
By day seven, I have two t shirts/trousers and a third imminent in the wash basket and a third that will be in there tomorrow, plus all my underwear which I change every day. She has nine sets of clothes plus underwear left.
I have four sets left. That will last me for the week, barring accidents. I don't need to do a wash. Neither does she. Wednesday of the next week, we both do a wash. We have enough for a full load. I put in the four sets I have worn. She puts in four sets, too, leaves 5 sets in the basket.

I have two sets of clothes left I haven't worn at all, one set I am wearing. She has 6 sets plus the one she is wearing that she hasn't worn. With the sets we have put in the wash, we both have enough to get us to the same washday again, it's just that she has clothes in the basket. I don't.

Kepler22B · 23/07/2026 06:59

You are making it needlessly complicated. If you wash your clothes after 1 wear you will need to do more loads of laundry. Regardless of how many clothes you have in your wardrobe. Your laundry basket will get full.

If you are your friend brought the same dress. And washing it makes it wear out/ lose shape / colour fade after 100 washes. You will have had 200 wears from the dress your friend will only have 100. Hence it has worn out quicker (less wears). Regardless of the actual time between dress wears.

Marmalademorning · 23/07/2026 07:35

Just wear the item again the next day. Then after two wears wash it (if it’s a top). If it’s bottoms then just put back in the wardrobe along with the other clothes.

My problem is I often have three outfit changes in a day. Generally jeans and a top, gym wear and a smarter outfit. The gym clothes go straight in the wash but the other two outfits don’t really need washing but aren’t fresh either.

TotallyTangerineGeum · 21/07/2026 18:12

I must be the only person who washes every item of clothing after each wear. Especially at this time of year!

I was just thinking the same !

hcee19 · 23/07/2026 08:27

Just wash it. What's the point of piling clothes up on a chair. How big is the pile before you start wearing the clothes again. Not for me, not heard of this before..

Girlwithavibe · 23/07/2026 08:38

Peg them.on the line !
Then bring them in and hang them up again ! They feel fresher then 😁

spideysmumma · 23/07/2026 09:19

I absolutely cannot stand this wishy washy attitude - either it’s clean and goes back in the wardrobe or it isn’t and goes in the washing basket. My brother’s house is an absolute shit tip because of all of the stuff that doesn’t get put away for ridiculous reasons like this

AgeingGreycefully · 23/07/2026 09:28

If I know I can rewear an item, I hang back in the wardrobe inside out. Then I know at a glance it’s wearability status! 😁

Aluna · 23/07/2026 09:30

Valet stand, you need one each.

Why is there no solution to the 'used-once-but-not-dirty' clothes pile?

How can you not get that I’m not just talking about the frequency of using your washing machine? No item of clothing needs washing after every gentle wear. If you only wear a garment 5 times a year and you wash it after every wear, you wash it 5 times in a year. If you only wash it after every 2 to 3 wears, you wash it twice a year 🙄

What's a 'gentle wear'? Say I wear a T-shirt for a typical day (sitting at home at my desk, out for about half an hour in the day to have a walk/buy lunch etc, sometimes cooking dinner, sometimes not). It will need washing at the end of the day, because I sweat and it starts to smell.

We don’t all have an issue with sweating and smelling during a normal day unless it’s exercise wear. Of course if you do, the garment needs washing!
