Why is there no solution to the 'used-once-but-not-dirty' clothes pile?

We all have this, don't we? A pile of clothes on a chair in the bedroom that aren't dirty enough to wash but not clean enough to go back in the wardrobe.

Mine sit on a chair looking untidy.

Try as I might, I can't find a solution. Blanket ladders aren't sturdy enough to put up with daily use, chairs take up a lot of space, hooks don't work for two people's worth of clothes.

AIBU for being frustrated there is not a magical solution to this? Or is there one that is being gate-kept by the eternally tidy and house proud crew?

I must be the only person who washes every item of clothing after each wear. Especially at this time of year!

No, you're not alone. Everything of mine gets washed after one wear, including jumpers, sweatshirts...

ADHDAnnie · 22/07/2026 15:40

This is an eternal problem for me. Particularly with jeans and jumpers.
I currently have an Sainsbury's shopping basket under my dressing table that I put stuff in, but it builds up and I end up losing things at the bottom of it for months on end.
A valet stand sounds like a good idea but we are limited for space.

WaryCyanStork · 22/07/2026 16:13

Trousers/jumpers I put on my chair, but I will rewear them in the next day or two so they don't pile up.

Tops I nearly always wash after one use. Otherwise they also go on the chair to wear around the house the next day.

Anything that I'm not likely to wear for a while goes in the wash, or back in the wardrobe if only worn very briefly.

OneLimePombear · 22/07/2026 16:26

I think this fear of worn clothes is crazy, do you all wash your curtains everyday if the windows have been opened or wash coats/keep them away from other clothes after every wear? What happens if the reworn jackets touch the clean clothes underneath?

I'm not sure anyone on here is claiming that it's logical, TBF Grin

I've got that. It fits neatly in the corner, can turn and the top hooks are high enough to fit long dresses. If we are going out, I put what I've ironed to wear, on there.

If you are going to wear it again put it in the wardrobe. If it’s too dirty to go in the wardrobe. Put it in the laundry basket.

Agree with this

I have a Floordrobe. Sadly out of business now

Wow! Terrible for the environment, your clothes will wear out much faster and the colours will become much duller.

MaddestGranny · 22/07/2026 18:33

Give once-worn things a good "air-washing" (a good long shake), hang them up on a window-frame or picture-rail or door-frame or drape them over a chair overnight. Put them back in the wardrobe in the morning. In other words, don't put still-body-warm clothes back in the wardrobe, let them air out overnight.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 22/07/2026 18:36

I have a lot of these as often wear gym gear until lunchtime then change after the gym. I use an over the door hanger which has 3 hooks and proves sufficient. The children can’t wear anything for more than an hour before it’s filthy so no chairdrobe for them!

jac120w · 22/07/2026 18:45

I put them back in the wardrobe but hook the coathanger the opposite way over the rail. When I wear it again I know it's a second wear so it goes in the wash that time.

BeddysMum · 22/07/2026 18:58

I understand the struggle! Usually due to unpredictable weather and different clothing requirements depending on where I'm going. If it gets out of hand, they just go in the wash.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 22/07/2026 18:59

You could either buy different hanger to what you normally use eg widen, black, coloured so you know when you use these there are good for another wear.
Or turn the hangers the other way round
or get a narrow standalone rail

StMarie4me · 22/07/2026 19:07

I hang them up to air overnight and put them back in the wardrobe. We all waste way too much water washing things all the time!

parkezvous · 22/07/2026 19:12

If I’m happy to re wear any clothing I hang them up outside the wardrobe to air then put them back in after a few hours

Sheepsmellnice · 22/07/2026 19:50

Hang them up when uou take them off

MummyToOrla · 22/07/2026 19:51

I'm confused - we aren't putting them in the laundry basket because they are clean enough to wear...so wear them again? I put my stuff on a hanger on the wardrobe door then either wear it again the next day or the following day, by which point it goes in the wash. Unless it's jumpers/jeans which are worn a multitude of times so go back in the wardrobe/Chester drawers ...

I hang mine, spray with some mixed fabric softener and water and use my steamer. Then I hang the hanger the opposite way to 'clean' clothes in my wardrobe.

WorkerBee123 · 22/07/2026 20:39

Oooo I’ve always wondered, along the same lines, if you wear a fully different outfit every day-do you put that back away or some/most of it? I reckon influencers must spend most of their lives laundering!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 22/07/2026 20:48

This is what an exercise bike is for. HTH

Excellentvintage · 22/07/2026 20:55

I put mine back in the wardrobe but inside out to remind me that I have already worn them once.

sabbii · 22/07/2026 21:10

If I want to put them back in the wardrobe I just give it a steam clean for a full refresh. Otherwise I have a hook for wear again till they are ready to go in the wash

Pushmepullu · 22/07/2026 21:13

I thought I was the only one who had this dilemma. Two of my friends wash anything that has been in contact with their skin irrespective of how long they’ve been on for.

Wow! Terrible for the environment, your clothes will wear out much faster and the colours will become much duller.

I assume when people say they only wear clothes once, they don't mean they put the items in the wash on their own and run the machine every day. I assume they have enough clothes to wear a different outfit 7 days a week, put the worn clothes in the wash basket and do an actual wash when they have a full load.

Of course, if you are a family of four doing that, you'll have a full load most days, but it won't be a question of washing the same outfits every day. I think some of you are imagining people washing one set of clothes every day so it's clean for the next day.
