to think the UK should have bidets

Just that really. I far prefer the French habit of having a wash after having a no 2, much more civilised. The British way is actually unhygienic and gross.

Bidets are gross. Japanese toilets are amazing!

Yes not a public bidet. I do what you do too. I just wish everyone else did also.

Get one then? You can buy them in the UK.

these are the comments on this topic I don’t get.

the uk has brilliant plumbing, sewerage and has had proper loos in every home and public building for the best part of 50 years.

what do we have to learn from countries who have notoriously awful toileting conditions, including laterines, open sewers, holes in the floor etc.?!!

in what other scenario would this make sense? “I really don’t think we have very good motorways in the uk, I wish it was more like Sudan”

You would be surprised. People in countries that you might consider backward find some of our practices dirty. Like not washing our bums after a poo. Washing up dishes soaking in a bowl of water and then not rinsing with fresh water. That must be a shock for you to hear!

Aaaaargh.

This has to be a joke 😂😂

It’s the funniest thing I’ve seen on here in ages, but the number of people who think it is real is astonishing

I agree. Are they complicated to use? They seem to have a lot of buttons.

I’ve lived with bidets for the last 30+ years (Italy) and I wouldn’t be without one.
Not only for number twos but for periods, episiotomy and general postpartum cleaning. Also when potty training for a quick clean-up.

Then on a daily basis, for pedicure and foot soaks, handwashing small amounts of laundry, soaking pot plants.

Obviously they need to be kept spotless. I use Nancy Birtwhistle’s citric acid spray.

We had one when I grew up, I think the only thing it was used for was me bathing my doll in it at the same time as I was pestering my mum when she was trying to have a nice bath after working all day. 😂

It takes practice, but you know you’ve scored a bullseye when your first post-gun fart ends with a warm trickle. <chef’s kiss>

Please tell me you didn’t think the poo flannel was a real thing 🫣

I’ve accepted I missed the joke. But I wasn’t the only one and I clocked on quickly and flagged it up so not sure why I’m the one singled out. Maybe go through and quote everyone missing the joke?

And as I’ve said - I know there’s a penchant for strip washes on here a that is not too far off - you are washing your bits with a flannel. Hence my confusion.

Well said. The washing up thing and not taking your shoes off inside, oh and carpets..would be considered dirty where I live.

Happyinheels · Today 15:59

Sorry, I’m struggling to make it past the poster who said they keep a bucket and a flannel next to the toilet, and then give it a good rinse ready for the next person… the flannel? You rinse the flannel for the next person???? This beats spiders willies and everything I’ve ever read on here! 🤢

I don't have a bidet but we do keep a flannel and a bucket next to our bathroom toilet. After a number 2 we have a good scrub then rinse it out for the next person. Not quite as good but we all manage to keep clean enough.

That is seriously gross ! How on earth is that hygienic ?

NotBreezy · Today 16:00

I wet some tissue and use that. It’s a more localised application of water! There are more self-contained public toilets these days which makes things easier.

No it’s not a shock because they bang on about it constantly. But just because they are forrin doesn’t mean they’re actually right about their beliefs does it? 😂 the uk is objectively not a dirty or unhygienic country.

Yes exactly! And having dogs inside the house, never mind on your sofa and bed. People’s ideas of what is ‘dirty’ vary in different cultures.

Are you Roman? Does it come on a stick that you share with the whole street? Wtf 😂😂😂

Well, it wasn't. Some of the water companies now have a lot to answer for...

No, I think its personal, like a toothbrush. Some people have names on them, and they all sit in a bucket or rack together like a big toothbrush holder.

You seem to have quite fixed ideas about different cultures. And some rose-tinted views about the UK too. Of course not washing your bum is ‘objectively’ more dirty. It’s not going to cause any problems or illness, but of course it means you have a less clean bum. That is objective science!

ThisISmycircusandtheseAREmymonkeys · Today 16:06

I wish @didntlikeanyofthesuggestions would come back and clarify.

She is either sitting back laughing or busy washing her flannels.

RedToothBrush · Today 16:09

Lots of people and places in the UK have bathrooms which aren't big enough to install a bidet because we have a higher population density in most of our towns and cities than many places in Europe.

My Dutch friend has a much bigger bathroom because the trend is for the washer and dryer to go in the main bathroom rather than have a utility room. Keep in mind when the majority of Dutch homes were built compared to our larger number of older Victoria era housing stock. (A lot of this comes down to levels of destruction in WW1 and WW2). She could fit a bidet in her main bathroom if she wanted. Also notably there is less of a trend for multiple bathrooms - the small ensuite is a particularly British trend.

Our infrastructure never mind attitudes are just not up to this cultural change.

It doesn’t mean you have a less clean bum at all- what are you on about?

The maximum your bum can be clean after pooing is that it’s free of excretement. Unless you’re squirting bleach up it

Wipes and a sanitary type bag to go in the outside bin?

Minging bucket and flannel. Do you boil wash them? I know wipes in the toilet are an environmental catastrophe, but boil washing a flannel every time you have a poo is terrible too (two? Boom boom 🙄)

Are trying to rival the penis beaker?

That was my first thought when I read that too!
