AIBU to let my children use all inclusive on a group holiday?

AIvSC · 12/07/2026 21:45

Against my better judgement I agreed to a group holiday. Mixture of family and friends all know each other well. All have children ranging from baby-16

My BIL organised it but we all booked separately.

He sent a link to an all inclusive resort and that's what I and half of the group booked.

BIL and the half booked the same hotel but self catering.

It was £600 more for AI- which as we are here for 8 days works out as less than £20 per person per day (four of us)

First night was fine as we all went out for dinner but today has been hell.

We have had a pool day and my kids have been able to get snacks/drinks/etc as they like but to purchase it all is quite expensive.

We've just come back from dinner- which was 'free' for us but not for them and were told it wasn't fair if our kids used the AI.

I asked why they didn't book the AI and they said they didn't like AI- but they were at dinner having the same food as us.

I don't want to be say to our kids that they can't use the AI but equally don't want to fall out. I enquired how much it would cost to upgrade to AI and it was 2200€ per family.

Obviously you’re right OP, and they are indeed Fucknuggets.
(This is now my favourite adjective. Thank you @BurnTheWholeThingDown )

ChickenBananaBanana · 12/07/2026 22:46

Can't they nip to a shop and buy some big bottles of pop or whatever? Cheeky shits.

AIvSC · 12/07/2026 22:44

We had planned to go out for meals and are happy to do so, but it is hot so the kids are getting lots of drinks/slushies.

To a pp I can't ask the kids to get it for their cousin's, the hotel is rightly very clear that this is not allowed and we could be thrown out.

To the pp who asked what they said. It was more or less, 'it is unfair that your children can get unlimited drinks when ours can't, we can't afford to buy them a drink every time yours gets one.'

It seems to be the kids more than the adults that they have a problem with, but then DH and I don't drink alcohol so mainly we have been drinking from our water bottles so hadn't been an issue (we don't drink and yet I still think AI is a bargain)

so is he always an idiot?

Summercocktailsgalore · 12/07/2026 22:48

how ridiculous,

I would enjoy some time away from the family group and let hem go off and do their own thing!

@AIvSC it was quite hard to follow your OP tbh, didn’t make sense in places (on the free vino? 😂 ) but I managed to work out the gist of it.

Are they not wanting your DC to use the AI as it’s causing them problems with their own children? You would hardly start paying for food and drinks you’ve already paid for when booking. Their request is odd to say the least. They might be thinking your DC could order all the snacks/drinks etc… for all the kids using their AI bands, so they get it for free too. 🤷‍♀️

Lol, I haven't had one, but it is so hot and I'm cross so blaming that.

Yes that is the problem. Their kids want what my kids are having, but it is "free" for mine and expensive for theirs.

Dollymylove · 12/07/2026 22:48

Bloody hell thats massive CFery. Tell them to bog off, it ain't your problem!!.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 12/07/2026 22:49

"Yes, its expensibe buying cold drinks/snacks/ice cream/meals, thats why we chose the AI option"

ByRoseBiscuit · 12/07/2026 22:50

So your kids aren’t supposed to have the drinks and food you have already paid for in advance so they don’t have to buy their own kids food and drink?! Yeah I would be telling them to get lost, that’s ridiculous.

Dollymylove · 12/07/2026 22:52

No need for them to pay hotel prices for snacks and drinks. Don't they realise there are shops that sell the stuff at a fraction of the price?

Manxexile · 12/07/2026 22:52

@AIvSC - when your bil sent the link to the hotel and before you all booked separately, did no-one think to ask everyone whether they wanted to go AI or not?

Were the other half surprised that you'd opted for AI?

MalcomVexx · 12/07/2026 22:05

I knew that’d get some holier than thou comments. The world won’t end because some kids got some extra drinks or chips at a location built on western excess and gluttony.

It's not to do with being holier than thou, the hotel know people try this and they have their staff specifically watching out for it. You'd most likely get caught, the hotel would see it as stealing and kick you all out, and there'd be nothing you could do as it would have been in the Ts and Cs.

This is the most batshit insane thing I’ve read all day, and the competition has been stiff.

Tell them to fuck off and stop being such complete fucknuggets. Don’t give them any hint that this is at all an acceptable request. It’s not.

This.

Im trying to hold the laughter in tbh.

imagine actually saying this to someone! And then even considering it for a second. I would have just laughed.

Edited

This sums it up, they were too lazy and tight to book it so other people have to miss out?

Busybeemumm · 12/07/2026 22:54

How ridiculous. Just do your own thing and enjoy the AI.

HopeIsAScaryThing · 12/07/2026 22:54

I'd have laughed at him. He had the opportunity to book AI in advance when it was cheaper; he chose not to. Your children will continue to use what you have paid for.

Sunshine5791 · 12/07/2026 22:55

And this is why, when our kids were younger, if we went somewhere that had the option of AI, we went AI! We didn’t want the DC to make friends round the pool with other dc who had AI and had constant access to drinks and snacks and for us to be constantly saying no- that is not a holiday and isn’t fair on the DC.

I appreciate your dc haven’t made holiday friends and the other children are friends from home but this is a problem for their parents to sort out. What did they think was going to happen? Do not encourage your dc to get extras to share- that’s not how AI works and do not ask your dc to restrict what they want- you’ve paid for it already so it’s not free! This is a problem for the other parents to sort. If they could t afford the upgrade to AI, they should have spoken up before booking and as a group you should have discussed alternatives. They didn’t so now need to deal with it.

ZenNudist · 12/07/2026 22:11

Why don't you suggest they go to shop get a load of drinks and snacks then their dc won't miss out by the pool. Then if we're them I'd be off for a lovely dinner around the resort rather than stuck to the hotel. I'd book a boat trip, go for a walk and grab drinks and ice cream. Just get the benefit of not being AI really.

I never understand this mentality. You’re not chained to the hotel if you go AI - we often go AI and still have meals out and days out and still pay less than we would if we were self catering/half board. It’s often not that much more to go AI if you time your booking well (as OP has found our - £20 per person per day is a couple of drinks and an ice cream at the hotel and you’re quids in, even if you eat out for every meal!)

SallyD00lally · 12/07/2026 22:59

They are being bat shit.

But so are you if you have to check with Mumsnet that it’s ok for your kids to use the AI you paid for.

If you were all on Family Fortunes you’d be the Bat-Shit family.

Ponderingwindow · 12/07/2026 22:59

Half the reason to book AI is so you don’t have to tell your kids no to the endless requests for smacks and treats while on holiday. It’s a rare treat to have freedom without budgeting. Sometimes we do it even if we know it’s not the most cost effective just because we enjoy that “yes day” feeling.

reprohensiletail · 12/07/2026 22:59

I'd be telling BIL that as you have already paid for AI, you and your children will be using it. Of course you shouldn't just not have your children use a service you've paid good money for. If I ever holidayed together again, I'd be sure to tell him in advance if was opting for AI so he can make an informed decision, but that's the most I'd do.

MammaofBree · 12/07/2026 23:01

One of the best things my dc love about our annual abroad holiday is the AI!
And I do let them indulge as it’s the one time of the year they are allowed ice cream 3 times a day and different fizzy pop flavours etc.

Let your kids use the Ai as much as you are happy with it’s their holiday too and why should your poor kids suffer when you’ve paid for the luxury!

ENJOY!

Franjipanl8r · 12/07/2026 23:02

Why organise a holiday at an all inclusive if they didn’t want people to use the all inclusive?!

See this is what I think they thought AI was.
It isn't a prison camp.

We also plan to eat elsewhere, book a boat trip, grab drinks etc. but I knew that on resort we would spend more than 20€ a day on water/pop/slushie. Even if we only have drinks I think we would break even, add in breakfast and we are saving money.

We are happy to go out and eat drink etc but I just don't want to say no when we are on resort. Frozen bottled water is 1.5€ they have drunk lots of these today.

your BIL is totally bonkers.
Ignore and have a fabulous holiday with all the icecreams, drinks and slushies your DC can handle
