AIBU to let my children use all inclusive on a group holiday?

Against my better judgement I agreed to a group holiday. Mixture of family and friends all know each other well. All have children ranging from baby-16

My BIL organised it but we all booked separately.

He sent a link to an all inclusive resort and that's what I and half of the group booked.

BIL and the half booked the same hotel but self catering.

It was £600 more for AI- which as we are here for 8 days works out as less than £20 per person per day (four of us)

First night was fine as we all went out for dinner but today has been hell.

We have had a pool day and my kids have been able to get snacks/drinks/etc as they like but to purchase it all is quite expensive.

We've just come back from dinner- which was 'free' for us but not for them and were told it wasn't fair if our kids used the AI.

I asked why they didn't book the AI and they said they didn't like AI- but they were at dinner having the same food as us.

I don't want to be say to our kids that they can't use the AI but equally don't want to fall out. I enquired how much it would cost to upgrade to AI and it was 2200€ per family.

Your BiL is outrageous! Of course he can't stop your kids from using the AI, and shouldn't have asked. In his position, I would be doing a lot more away from the hotel, and away from your family - for example, days out and meals in our apartment/room as SC. Would see you guys maybe around the pool after our day out and then at evening entertainment.

Am perplexed as to why BiL recommended/chose an AI hotel and then didn’t bloody book AI!! Everyone knows it works out better value - that’s the model!

They have three choices:
1 they can shut the hell up and stop being complete morons.
2 they can pay the upgrade
3 insist your DC don’t use the AI but agree to pay for everything they want as you’ve already paid for it anyway

Some people have an odd attitude to AI.

For a certain type of holiday with smaller kids around a pool you save a fortune - drinks, ice cream, lollies, chips all included.

your children shouldn’t have to go without becuase someone didn’t see or understand the massive advantage.

I’m afraid you’ve got it all wrong. They’ll put the prices up for you anyway.
You won’t benefit in any way shape and form from people not doing it

Costs will be based on how much is consumed, so if they budget for 50 people, and 100 use it, then next years costs will reflect this. Same as those not declaring income because they get paid in cash, it means costs are shared amongst a smaller pool of those who do pay. Pretending it doesn't impact costs is just justifying taking something you didn't pay for. Walk into a shop, pick up a bottle of water, and tell them it doesn't matter if you pay for it. Should be a fun day for security.

Again I’m afraid you’ve got little understanding of profit and loss v’s opportunity. Yes the numbers are calculated on P&L but they’ll put the numbers up anyway even if they made nothing but pure profit on the 50 people they’ll still double it because why not? You’d stupidly pay it.

How absurd. Prices will go up anyway so why not take what you haven't paid for?
Sure Jan.

Because whether they have a brain or not, will not help you if you’re picking your face up off the driveway, will it?
In front of the children as well 🙀
Probably not the hill I’d want to die on, literally

I wouldn't change my behaviour out of fear. If I think something is wrong, I will speak out. If everyone shied away and stayed quiet when people did things wrong, we'd all be speaking German right now.

“Picking your face up off the driveway”
”Probably not the hill I’d want to die on, literally”

What are you getting out of this? It comes across as very bizarre.

Why are you calling me Jan? Do you think that’s some sort of derogatory name calling?
As I said earlier the real thief are the ones charging families is £5 for frozen water with a bit of colouring but yeah let’s focus on the brother in law who no doubt has a job contributes to society and just feels a little bit perturbed at the absurdity of snack prices

Well, quite a few of them did get a bullet or a bannet through their heads so ….
I guess pick your battles
World dictator gassing millions worth it
Somebody having a few extra pints at the all-inclusive not worth it

I’m laughing at the fools getting all worked up over a slushy

In my view, I don’t think that IS what you are doing. But it’s your time to use as you wish.

I just can’t get excited about a kid having an extra bit of frozen water for free as opposed to the actual theft of charging a fiver for it

So what's your cut off point for theft?
If the OP goes to the bar and brings all the "non AI" members of the party a cocktail each is that OK?
If they sneak into the restaurant and have free meals, is that OK?

Odd isn’t it. My DC are now 18 and 21. AI was a godsend as it meant they could go and eat when they wished and develop independence. As they’ve got older it has meant they could go to the restaurant together earlier in the evening, get pizzas and burgers etc, and free myself and DH up to have 1-2-1 evenings in the smarter resort restaurants when on holiday.

We think this might be the last year of AI as my DH and I don’t really eat that much - like a nice breakfast and a lovely evening meal, but don’t bother with deserts etc and although we like to drink, we’re happy to skip a few nights of local prosecco. However, a meal out with wine and beers was €250, so we still think, on balance that AI may still be more cost effective even if you aren’t a load-your-plate-three-times and get-as-many-beers-as-you-can in kind of punter.

You probably are right but I was caught in the headlights and didn't know what to say.

Had I read this thread I think I would have said. 'don't be ridiculous you fucknugget' 😂

I also liked the poster who suggested asking him if he'd been sniffing glue!

Honestly. He will never book non AI again lets be honest haha!

Hang on, am I understanding this correctly? Despite your whole family being AI, they want your kids (i.e. you) to pay for anything your kids consume/order? I’ve never heard of anything so absurd. They can bugger right off.

No he doesn't want her kids going and getting drinks or ice creams. Cos then his will moan as presumably he doesn't want to get them the same amount!

Ethelspagetti · Yesterday 10:46

Of course you should allow them! It’s crazy of him to even suggest that?! It’s not your fault he decided not to pay for all inclusive. It’s not too late as he could get his kids on a plan. Tell your kids to go and enjoy themselves otherwise they’re going to think they’re being punished for something. What’s wrong with your BIL that he cannot put his hand in his pocket and buy his kids a slushie?!

Error404FucksNotFound · Yesterday 10:47

They think you should have paid hundreds more for nothing?
They are bonkers.

Just realised I misread your post and the maths - assumed it was £600 per person so x4 was around the same as the €2200 upgrade per family. That is actually seriously steep, and I can fully understand the horror of the BiL at realising he stuffed up, but from experience I know it is very easy to spend that much on drinks, especially alcoholic ones, meals for 4 twice a day.

I think he needs to accept he cocked up and either pay the upgrade so at least he knows how much he will be spending or just accept that whatever budget he set for the week is slightly blown. And also learn from it that AI locations are cheaper booked in advance (tbf though, usually you can upgrade upon arrival for the same amount, so I am stunned by the uplift in price - perhaps he should query that with his travel agent).

Under no circumstances should your own kids NOT be be making the most of the AI facilities, though.

I think OP paid £600 in total! so yes £2000 is insane.

I mean, yeah, as much as they can get away with really I suppose we’ve all got different thresholds
I remember being in Tesco’s one Christmas and some man stuffed a frozen turkey up his jumper and started running for the exit, and security started running after him. They cornered him.
They shouted hey lad what are you gonna do with that?
And the bloke with the turkey up his jumper turned around and said some carrots, potatoes, and a bit of gravy.
He left with the turkey
They might not have been quite so entertained if it would’ve been a tele up his Northface jacket

BitOutOfPractice · Yesterday 10:51

I opened this thread genuinely thinking you were letting your kids use the AI to get beers and cocktails! IF that was the case YABU but as it happens YANBU

I think you need to encourage them to go to the hotel reception and sign up for AI for the remaining days. They have made a poor decision but I presume the hotel will be happy to sign them up.
