AIBU to let my children use all inclusive on a group holiday?

AIvSC · 12/07/2026 21:45

Against my better judgement I agreed to a group holiday. Mixture of family and friends all know each other well. All have children ranging from baby-16

My BIL organised it but we all booked separately.

He sent a link to an all inclusive resort and that's what I and half of the group booked.

BIL and the half booked the same hotel but self catering.

It was £600 more for AI- which as we are here for 8 days works out as less than £20 per person per day (four of us)

First night was fine as we all went out for dinner but today has been hell.

We have had a pool day and my kids have been able to get snacks/drinks/etc as they like but to purchase it all is quite expensive.

We've just come back from dinner- which was 'free' for us but not for them and were told it wasn't fair if our kids used the AI.

I asked why they didn't book the AI and they said they didn't like AI- but they were at dinner having the same food as us.

I don't want to be say to our kids that they can't use the AI but equally don't want to fall out. I enquired how much it would cost to upgrade to AI and it was 2200€ per family.

were you at the same place at the same time as the OP is? Brcause if you are not then your experience is irrelevant.

Everybody’s experience is irrelevant if we’re not all in the moment there and then I’ve had a little look to see what threads you’ve posted on and it seems that you’ve passed on to irrelevant experience too

I know, I can't work it out either 😁

Think it’s just you and me finding it funny 🤦‍♀️

I can't stop chuckling. Logically, it's something about drinks but ... ?!

I voted yabu only because you were being unreasonable to even consider it/tel him you would think about it rather than laughing in his face!

Your BIL chose to take the cheapest option possible, now his kids are upset and his answer is to upset yours as well? I expect he feels bad he's DC upset but he doesn't get to assuage his guilt by spoiling it for you too.

Probably wasn't even the cheapest. Even if they're eating out most evenings, £20 per person per day is a great deal for 2 meals plus drinks and snacks. I suspect a lot of us with kids find that's more where the value is, especially if your DC are still young enough to eat off children's menus. But I guess if they've not done AI before they may not have realised that, or done any research.

OP, I appreciate the 2200 Euros for the whole family to upgrade is out of their budget, is it worth them seeing how much it'd be for just the kids? The adults are presumably the more expensive per head.

Oh my god, no it’s not forbidden is it?

Call the police 🙀

tread carefully if i was you because the certain type that you are snitching on is also the type that might knock your teeth out

Edited

Bit harsh.

I wouldn't risk it either...and tbh, it's not about moral fibre so much as a fear of getting caught and being asked to leave. The McChancers. Mortifying.

So I’ve run it past ChatGPT and still no clue 🤣

Free drinks? Fanta, coke ….?

pizzaHeart · Yesterday 09:29

I wonder if upgrade is more costly for BIL’s family because it’s an upgrade from SC to AI whereas OP wasn’t even considering SC , her upgrade was from full board to AI.

I wouldn’t restrict snacks and drinks for your kids ( unless YOU wanted to do it for health reasons). However maybe your kids could come to sit with you while eating ice cream/ snacks? Not for drinks of course.

TheCurious0range · Yesterday 09:31

dapsnotplimsolls · Yesterday 09:16

The what now? 😁

😂 I can't even remember what that was meant to be! Fucks definitely drinks, no idea about faints!

"However maybe your kids could come to sit with you while eating ice cream/ snacks?"
not sure what the point of that would be?

Chaarlene · Yesterday 09:32

My favourite non-commital phrase is 'thanks, I'll bear that in mind'. Meaning - Even though I am not doing what you want, I did hear what you asked.

I don't know how it works at AI (do you have different coloured wristbands or something? But - could you have a small compromise in the snack/drink stakes? Eg: get the slushies (you don't want) and let the non-AI kids have it? Because, actually, those drinks have been allocated for you whether you want it or not. If you leave them by your sunbeds or whateves, no one is going to police which kid is slurping which slushie.

Interesting that you presumably type 'fucks' more often than 'drinks' ... 😎

Love that your autocorrect changed drinks to fucks 🤣🤣🤣

Just realised I misread your post and the maths - assumed it was £600 per person so x4 was around the same as the €2200 upgrade per family. That is actually seriously steep, and I can fully understand the horror of the BiL at realising he stuffed up, but from experience I know it is very easy to spend that much on drinks, especially alcoholic ones, meals for 4 twice a day.

I think he needs to accept he cocked up and either pay the upgrade so at least he knows how much he will be spending or just accept that whatever budget he set for the week is slightly blown. And also learn from it that AI locations are cheaper booked in advance (tbf though, usually you can upgrade upon arrival for the same amount, so I am stunned by the uplift in price - perhaps he should query that with his travel agent).

Under no circumstances should your own kids NOT be be making the most of the AI facilities, though.

PropertyD · Yesterday 09:35

I agree. Dont steal food for your BIL and his kids who havent paid for AI. They had a choice. Of course his children 'miss' out. They havent paid for AI

firstofallimadelight · Yesterday 09:36

I’d just say “I’ve thought about it and no I’m not going to spoil my kids holiday, we paid ai for this reason”

shhblackbag · Yesterday 09:38

Marmite27 · 12/07/2026 21:47

Tell them as you’ve paid for it they will be using it! I can’t believe they’d expect you not to. They booked on the cheap, they can deal with the moving kids!

Absolutely this. Obviously.

I said what my mother taught me - let me think about it.

It is a genius phrase, I use it on the kids all the time when I don't know quite how I want to answer. It infuriated me when I was a kid but I see the benefit now, and I always do think about it and answer. I will answer my bil tomorrow.

The other one that I use is "I'll see what I can do."

I know right? Even on 100% profit they’d be making a fortune if they charge a pound for the frozen water but no they decide to steal from hard-working families held captive on site for holidays.

Thats not the burn you think it is.

Nice try. Epic fail.

GasPanic · Yesterday 09:45

Maybe you should point out to them that you have already paid £20 pp per day for the AI.

How much are they shelling out on slushies ?

Maybe they should go to the supermarket and buy a load of cheap cans or something.

Maybe you could ask your BIL to refund the cost of your kids AI if he wants them to stop using it.

SouthLondonMum22 · Yesterday 09:49

Housebashing · Yesterday 08:54

I mean yes that’s the ideal scenario but Plan B would be for her children to just give them the odd slushy. It wouldn’t kill them.

It wouldn't kill their parents to actually pay for AI either.

I would not be encouraging my children to take things for others. The adults need to pay for it just like OP has.

Why should they risk getting chucked out/thieve from the hotel for the sake of someone else who didn't want to pay up for the AI ?

How do you explain to your kids that it is OK to steal stuff in this context but not in others ?

It actually surprises me the hotel does an AI and a non AI option because my guess is a lot of people would try to get away with doing this.
