Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Well if you apply Scot logic it was founded by an English woman in England 🫢

your response of ‘if you don’t like it, do one’ is illustrative of a lot of the issues described within this thread

You should celebrate the British Empire's role in the abolition of slavery. It isn't much talked about these days and I've seen people being booed for talking about it, presumably by people who don't believe it happened, but the British Empire played a pivotal role in ending the slave trade worldwide. We paid off slave owners, slave traders and regional leaders. We used diplomatic pressure and we used our military power. Some 17,000 sailors in the Royal Navy died in 60 year of patrolling the Atlantic to end the slave trade. You can read about it at The British Empire’s Role In Ending Slavery Worldwide - Historic UK.

Yes but dont forget we invented slavery, no other country before us ever thought of it 🙄 We also invented war and murder

I don’t like the way the English team plays, it rubs me up the wrong way and I’m half English, born and raised here. They play really poorly and rely on fouls to get free kicks in or close to the goal / penalties even. It’s pretty lame. They’d also be absolutely nowhere without Bellingham or Pickford. The defence last night was shockingly bad. Dan Burn was the best part of last night’s game, what a guy!

Actually statistically you’re wrong. Argentina have scored the most penalty/set piece goals - 50% and have done a lot of rolling around. Arguably they were very lucky with decisions against Egypt.

France and England are similar with 29% and 30%.

Spain have scored the most goals from open play - 16%.

So no England haven’t been particularly reliant on free kicks and pens. They were very good against Mexico for instance, although not against Norway.

He didn’t really, he had a bad game last night.

I guess the two goals he scored against DRC were optional

Admittedly only France as that’s the other half of me. They play better.

England vs Mexico?

🥱 Meanwhile, Morrocan fans...OP, I dont know what you want from this thread. You're going to get the same old boring diatribe. It's a mix of envy and xenophobia.

Yeh leave it on Reddit. If people want to diatribe on there they can.

Or Kane.

In fact, yes, they’d be nowhere without their three best players and the spine of the team.

🙄

I really wish commentators would stop banging on about 1966 !
But the most annoying thing is when ( some) English people talk about the King of England. They need to remember there’s a world beyond the English border .

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

I really want to see us being ‘incredibly unbearable’.

Come on England!

Ginmonkeyagain · Yesterday 10:42

England fans used to have a (very much deserved) reputation for violence and thuggery, but to be fair to our govenrment, the FA and fan organisations is has been cracked down on a lot.

Sadly football violence exists everywhere, we were in France last week and there were curfews in some cities (incliding Toulouse where we were) the nights of France games due to concerns from the authorities about post match violence.

Yes, the Spanish, French and Argentinians aren’t at all like that at all.
I suppose they will be mildly ashamed to getting so far in the competition and reprimanding each other if they get too excited, god forbid they show any enthusiasm of winning.

😂 I'm not English but from a UE country. I wanted Norway to win because they are underdogs. I think many people who are not personally invested root for the underdogs. So I wouldn't want France, England or Spain to win- Argentina is the most "underdoggish" of them all I suppose so I hope they will win.

Imo people tend to associate English football with drunk hooligans and that's why you got a bad rep. Nothing to do with the English team that is quite sympathetic.

I admit that I was happy when the US lost- Nothing against their team but more about the imperialistic sense of superior country with their twat of a President losing. Especially since Trump tried to meddle with the FIFA judging.

Breakfastinthesunshine · Yesterday 10:47

I disagree that most people hate us.. I’ve just returned from Egypt and hotel staff went out of their way ( ie completely unprompted) to say how much they liked the English …
It was the English guests who chatted and joked with staff, English guests who were not demanding in the restaurant and always said thank you ( with a smile). I even saw some farewells with staff that involved big bear hugs.

I thought a lot of the dislike and contempt for the English is to do with their disgraceful behaviour when on holiday in other people's countries.
Including their arrogance in not feeling the need to bother learning other people's languages.

I am English, speak 3 languages, and always learn a bit of the language of any country I visit. I strongly disagree with you. English is the lingua franca. Almost every person you meet abroad has some English and are mostly very keen to get some practice in with a native speaker, often to the point of rudeness if you don’t oblige. There is no obvious second language for us that comes anywhere near the utility of English and it’s actually pretty rational of English people not to spend time on language learning unless they really love it. I happen to really love it but that’s personal and I wouldn’t expect anyone else to.

stonkytonk11 · Yesterday 10:49

It’s a discussion that will never get resolved…we see it as a bit of banter so please don’t take it too seriously! Just enjoy the football and support your team 🙂

I'm Irish and I'm up for England, but kind of clandestinely. I wouldn't be cheering for them in a pub, like, but I'm happy they're through. This may be a poor reflection on me 😁.
Harry Kane is a lovely chap.

I'm Irish and as we didn't qualify for World Cup, I genuinely support England and wish them well - hoping they win! My Dad feels the same as we were chatting about the match yesterday.

TrishM80 · Yesterday 10:50

Lots of other European countries had colonial empires that used slavery and exploited the rest of the world's natural resources, but while other countries have apologised for this, England (and "the English" in general) still glorify their colonial past and imply their former colonies should be "grateful".

Rubs people up the wrong way.

We don't mean it but a football was mentioned in 1486 and Henry V111 ordered a pair of football boots so it may stem from that. I don't think we feel a good given right to winning although there were some who felt the "hand of God" was involved.

Speakeasier · Yesterday 10:51

I’m Scottish, it has nothing to do with the English team and nothing to do with the English supporters but everything to do with the British media and commentators.
Im not talking about regional news I’m talking about the main news and main commentators. The endless “we” when they are talking about England is infuriating, they see England as their team but are getting paid to broadcast, commentate on behalf of the whole of the UK.
I can’t speak on behalf of why the Bostonians loved having the Tartan Army over but closed up when the English arrived though

I loathe the media. But they are there just to wind people up. Like when they asked Tuchel if we had a mentality problem - what an appalling take. Luckily he gave him short shrift. He was right we lacked quality for much of the match but you could see they were trying to win and they were doing their best.

But then they followed it up by saying to Bellingham immediately after the game oh your manager was disappointed with your (the team’s) performance, to get a rise from him. Tuchel wasn’t disappointed with the effort they put in. He just knows they have more quality than they showed last night (not helped by the conditions as seemingly it was massively hot and humid). Luckily Bellingham handled it well but it was shit journalism not reporting the news but trying to create it.

Awful newspapers like the Sun, the Mail and Telegraph have constantly drip, drip, dripped xenophobia and Britain is best for decades. All of them owned by people who don’t even live here by the way… It winds up those who lack critical thinking so you do end up with the Johnny Foreigner mentality and Brexit.

It’s hard for those who see through this crap and didn’t vote for Brexit but nearly half of us didn’t and actually a lot of them that did are now dead so probably more than half now.

"the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and countless others are never English, they're British..."

Did you read the post they were quoting?

That poster was talking about Andy Murray.

Apparently, Andy Murray is British when he wins, but Scottish when he loses.

So assume the poster meant we could say the same about the Stones, Beatles etc

They're English, but media say British.

The Andy Murray thing makes me laugh- what a load of shite.

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

Nah, I love France.
