AIBU to hope for a fresh start by the sea on £250k

I am mid fifties and want a new start. No family support. AIBU to think I can find a house by the sea or in a low-crime market town with a maximum budget of £250k? Any ideas?

See though for me, if I was going to make a major life change to move to the sea, I’d want a sandy beach not a pebbly one. Though the trade off is probably being further from London (if that’s something you want).

Ilfracombe is worth considering.

It's a very beautiful place and a town of a size that lot's going on - cinema, theatre, arts, lots of walking, social, sports and creative groups.
It's very affordable and attracts people from all over so is very welcoming.

Like everywhere it's not perfect but my friend moved there a few years ago for the seaside, friendly community, outdoor life and cheaper property and she absolutely loves it. Two more people from our circle have moved there since because they've love it so much when visiting.

Avoid the east coast from Skegness to the Humber and after crossing north over the Humber avoid the area up to Whitby APART from Filey. Whitby itself is OK for a day trip but is otherwise not very nice for all year living.
Inland the market towns of Pickering/Malton/Beverley are pleasant.

Could you get much in Ilfracombe for 250k? Like wise Falmouth is nice but probably out of budget no? Maybe Tenby? It's a bit out on a limb though... Falmouth has Truro at least.

Scarborough is a great place ,plenty going on so you can make friends,

£230k in Ilfracombe will buy an up-together three bed terraced house with a garden minutes from the centre of town and the sea.

There are over 60 houses on Rightmove under £250k in Ilfracombe and 28 in Falmouth. (even more if you would consider flats)

I've lived in Falmouth. It's lovely.

If you can stretch to 300k a lovely play in new quay wales was up for sale last week. Sea views and everything.

I spent ages yesterday researching Swansea and it seems like a good place with friendly people by all accounts.

My colleague has moved to Scotland recently to a place called Stranraer in South Scotland. He’s moved from Derby, paid £90kish for a beach front property.

I don't think you could expect to buy very much in Bude for £250k. And certainly you will not buy anything at all in any of the villages around it. But if you want a one person house, with a bit of room for a spare bed for visitors, yes.

It seems to me that from the Midlands south, the entry level for property purchase is about £250k for an ordinary two-up-two down terraced cottage.

I know Swansea quite well. Some bits are nice, but the town centre is rough and it's very 'local'.....(Somewhat inward looking). Amazing beaches mind

Maybe you need a tour of Britain to see where takes your fancy. I love Devon and Cornwall as a visitor but the are too remote. I would not now move to anywhere in the southern half of England because there are just too many people and too much traffic. Areas which are not simply there for tourists and dead out of season, which are not run down through unemployment, which are not too remote from services do exist. I live where I live because it is a small county with hills and sea, within 30 minutes of a large city and with a lot on offer in terms of art, sports, food, etc. It is very much a community.
You need to work out what you want to be able to do, will you still be working, do you have hobbies which will allow you to quickly identify your tribe.

Northumberland

Narberth is a lovely town with independent shops, an annual food festival as well as other events. Close to Sundersfoot as well as Tenby. Reasonable distance from larger towns of Carmarthen, Lanelli, Llandeilo, Cardigan and Swansea as well as the Pembrokeshire coast. If you’re going to visit for research check out the b&b at Ash Farm at Stepaside - fabulous place. Good luck in your new venture.

Yes, I will still need to work. I need to narrow down the choices and I’m very appreciative of all the suggestions made - adding to my written list all the time as this thread is three days only.

I would check out all the beaches with Blue Flag status around the UK and then identify what you can afford nearby. No point moving to the seaside if you’re swimming and paddling in sewage.

Places in Kent I’d consider include Deal , Faversham, Sandwich and Folkstone.

The snob in me also day the less accessible the area when it comes the beaches the better. Let likely to end up with a future skeggy or Blackpool.
