AIBU to hope for a fresh start by the sea on £250k

I am mid fifties and want a new start. No family support. AIBU to think I can find a house by the sea or in a low-crime market town with a maximum budget of £250k? Any ideas?
YABU - budget is too low
YANBU - these places exist

Kent coast? I’d be careful on areas, but might be able to get something in a smaller village. Usually nice weather too!

As far as 2 places on that list go, if the OP doesn't want run down seaside towns, then she had best avoid Ayr, and the Cumbrian coast is definitely extremely beautiful (I live on it), but Workington is definitely a blot on it. It has a reputation locally for being very rough.

I don’t want to move anywhere rough - not especially fearful but would like somewhere that feels fairly safe.

It doesn’t have to be by the sea, though the thought of walking along the beach does appeal.

I think I’ve been to Chatham, not sure what places are OK in Kent. I’m not big on shopping but need good WiFi and somewhere Amazon will deliver. It’s worth a trip 🧳

I read that Rhyl is really rough - admittedly this was on Reddit though.

That looks lovely. Is Margate an OK area?

Southsea is technically part of Portsmouth but is a beautiful, quite affluent, little beach town with its own identity and good transport links. £250k will get you a small terrace or a reasonably sized flat (just don’t go too far inland as it gets rougher). It has a pebble beach, library, a Waitrose, an pier, an amusement arcade, independent shops and restaurants, a common which occasionally plays host to events including Victorious Festival, a castle, a lake, and miniature village. Because it’s on the south coast it’s warmer than most of the other areas being discussed. It is a real hidden gem as - most of the ‘tourists’ are locals.

Redcar, seaton, saltburn, Whitby (possibly)

basically the north east

Another one for North East Coast Tynemouth and Whitely Bay have some nice shops, lovely Sandy beaches and are a metro ride in to Newcastle they are more expensive than other places nearby like Newbiggen by the sea but have a less industrial vibe and you would absolutely get something in budget. I'm north east born and bred and a super proud northern lass but I would avoid the Durham coast od you are not familiar with the area as although some bits are lovely others are very deprived and housing stock is poor.. have come across a few people where they brought a house for 50k without visiting, over up and were not happy when the rest of the street was derelict/owned by dodgy landlords etc etc

Fascinated by this thread. I have fantasies about doing something like this. But a bit anxious about the idea of starting completely from scratch socially in midlife, as someone without a partner. Has anyone done this? How did you find it?

I like the idea of somewhere warm. I’ve been put off flats because of leasehold charges, looking for a house really.

Bridlington and Cleethorpes are very run down and deprived.
Brid has a beautiful beach of miles and miles of sand but the town is grim.
Cleethorpes is really the mouth of the Humber and the beach is muddy. The resort area is old fashioned seaside but there are some pleasant residential areas.

The North Wales coast is a lot bigger than Rhyl OP (and some parts of Rhyl are lovely). What about Pwhelli? Llandudno? Anglesey?

I’m a bit anxious too. But I’ve been thinking about it for a couple of years now.

0.12m from the centre of Redcar sea front.

I really like the interior of this house. The Internet says to visit on a weekday to get the feel of a place but I work during the week.

How about Saltash? Outskirts are near the coast, it's a market town, just about in Cornwall, Plymouth near for theatre etc and the whole of the Cornish coast to explore. The river inland to the moors is glorious walking and your budget just about works.

I’ll look at Rightmove, thanks. What is Plymouth itself like?

Kircudbright is a gorgeous small fishing town on the Solway coast in Scotland. Lots of community activities, swimming pool, beaches nearby, art galleries, great cafes.
