AIBU to hope for a fresh start by the sea on £250k

I am mid fifties and want a new start. No family support. AIBU to think I can find a house by the sea or in a low-crime market town with a maximum budget of £250k? Any ideas?
YABU - budget is too low
YANBU - these places exist

Somewhere in the north west? Maybe in the Wirral, or Crosby, Formby, Ainsdale or Southport

Came to suggest these, although you’d be lucky to see the sea in Southport and the beach is just green stuff (although Ainsdale and Formby beaches are nice, as is Crosby) and New Brighton is also nice imo.

I’ve never been there. It looks as if I’ll need to go on some trips for research. I love looking in estate agent windows. My house isn’t for sale yet, so after much soul searching I’m looking at what might be realistic for later this year or next year.

Be wary of that area, looks like it will be flooded extensively in the future.

3 bedroom maisonette for sale in Burlington Court, Burnham on Sea, Somerset, TA8 https://share.google/M2bjwZujE7VIZ8Yte

Small seaside town in Somerset. It's about an hour's drive from Bristol.

I read that Rhyl is really rough - admittedly this was on Reddit though.

There's more to North Wales than Rhyl. Have a look at Rhos on Sea, Colwyn Heights, Llandudno West Shore, Y Felinheli and villages in between.

The North Wales coast is a lot bigger than Rhyl OP (and some parts of Rhyl are lovely). What about Pwhelli? Llandudno? Anglesey?

I wouldn’t say Pwhelli or Llandudno meet op’s criteria…most of Anglesey is fab tho

Scotland.
port seaton, dunbar. Possibly west coast like Ayr maybe.
loads of places in the highland islands looking for people to move to them, but prepare yourself for a major change of lifestyle.

Yes - a bit too far out and would need reliable WiFi even in storms etc

Check out Saltburn-by-the-Sea - gorgeous old Victorian town on the NE coast.

I love Saltburn. It used to be a bit run down around 25 years ago but is definitely on the up now. It has a beautiful long, sandy beach with a victorian pier and cliff tramway.

Pembrokeshire is stunning. I've just come back from a week in Little Haven and Broadhaven and its beautiful. Very safe. Lovely community feel.

Have you been to Skegness? I have lived there all my life and actually it’s a lovely seaside town with a fantastic beach and seafront and property is very good value, especially compared to down south Devon etc. I have visited Blackpool, great Yarmouth and cleethorpes and I think skegness is much nicer, we have a great theatre and there is always lots going on and easy access to the gourgous Lincolnshire wolds and surrounding towns

Agreed, Skegness isn't "run down" 👎🏻

I’ve also spent most of the day Googling but made the mistake of checking places on Reddit and opinions are mixed!

I’d avoid both of the places on the east coast! Ok to visit but not to live.

Papyrophile · Today 22:23

Aberdeenshire coast is beautiful, as long as you don't need to have a job.

Come to NI

Our coastline is stunning

You are never more then 30mins from a coast / city or airport

Goldbar26 · Today 22:27

Hoylake is nice:

Have a look at Deal, it’s buzzy but feels safe - nicer than Margate and close enough to large cities.

lincoln75 · Today 22:28

Skegness and surrounding areas have a bad reputation. However, we moved here 7 years ago from down south and love it. You can buy a detached house within your budget

I was last there 28 years ago, apologies. I have no idea what it’s like now.

I’m not sure how welcoming people in Welsh speaking areas are 😔 but maybe that’s second home owners. I’m happy to learn Welsh though.

It would appear that "these places" do exist but you have already decided against a lot of them. 😂

Spacestory · Today 22:29

Maybe Alderney in the Channel Islands

Skegness is a fabulous seaside town, vibrant and fun. The beach is amazing and the sea is so clear.

Have a look at Amble in Northumberland. The nearest train station is Alnmouth, the local ‘Arriva’ bus service is excellent.

Ilovemyshed · Today 22:31

Whitley Bay
