AIBU to hope for a fresh start by the sea on £250k

I am mid fifties and want a new start. No family support. AIBU to think I can find a house by the sea or in a low-crime market town with a maximum budget of £250k? Any ideas?
YABU - budget is too low
YANBU - these places exist

I really like the interior of this house. The Internet says to visit on a weekday to get the feel of a place but I work during the week.

Wow yeah it’s very modernised on the inside compared to the outside!

LindorDoubleChoc · Today 21:58

Yabu. Ask in Property/DIY. This isn't an AIBU question.

The North Wales coast is a lot bigger than Rhyl OP (and some parts of Rhyl are lovely). What about Pwhelli? Llandudno? Anglesey?

I’m not sure how welcoming people in Welsh speaking areas are 😔 but maybe that’s second home owners. I’m happy to learn Welsh though.

we live on a new build estate in Northumberland by the coast and a large proportion of buyers have done exactly what you propose - they all are so happy with the area and environment

Something like this would be perfect.

Been to Narberth many times. I am Welsh but don’t speak it! It’s a lovely little town !

mumumental · Today 22:06

I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/173078177

Slightly bigger and more modern available too but they are slightly further out of town.

Thanks! 3 bed preferably for home working but 2 beds would be OK in the right area. Library, swimming pool or sea, not a city person, not keen on run down seaside towns like Rhyl, Blackpool or Skegness, open to anywhere in England, Wales, possibly Scotland.

Have you been to Skegness? I have lived there all my life and actually it’s a lovely seaside town with a fantastic beach and seafront and property is very good value, especially compared to down south Devon etc. I have visited Blackpool, great Yarmouth and cleethorpes and I think skegness is much nicer, we have a great theatre and there is always lots going on and easy access to the gourgous Lincolnshire wolds and surrounding towns

A friend moved to Caister on Sea (widowed & no connection to the area). She has settled in really well & there is an amazing coastline where she walks her dogs. She has made a good group of friends (also dog owners) with regular lunch meet ups. Had a quick look & there are definitely 3 beds in your budget.

JazzyAmbs · Today 22:08

Lots in Wales.

Southsea.

Babbacombe / St Marychurch (near Torquay but quieter)

I disagree re the Kent coast, parts are ok but as soon as it’s sunny London comes out for a fight. We were there a few weeks ago and they actually stopped the trains because of fighting!

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePleaseBarista · Today 22:08

Ayrshire resident here… Troon, Prestwick, Alloway and Doonfoot but you will struggle to get 3 beds for your budget, 2 would be more likely.

As noted Ayr itself is not what it used to be, the town centre is half empty (like many in the UK), but it has some lovely aspects too with nice parks, walks, decent coffee shops and restaurants, walking/run clubs, few good gyms etc.

Dsis lives in North Berwick, absolutely beautiful but her 2 bed flat was around your budget.

thedogisfine · Today 22:09

Scotland.
port seaton, dunbar. Possibly west coast like Ayr maybe.
loads of places in the highland islands looking for people to move to them, but prepare yourself for a major change of lifestyle.

@R00tat00tt00t. I went to Kircudbright last year , loved it . As an artist I thought I’d found home.

FuzzyBumbleeBee · Today 22:10

You can get it but it depends where
Mines going up for sale at the end of the week town by the sea, a 5 minute walk
225k but it does need cosmetic work
If you want something done up in my area your looking closer to 280-300k

Something like this would be perfect.

One thing to consider is that the west coast of Wales is hard to travel to/from of that important to you. Takes ages to fly anywhere etc

Fascinated by this thread. I have fantasies about doing something like this. But a bit anxious about the idea of starting completely from scratch socially in midlife, as someone without a partner. Has anyone done this? How did you find it?

We moved, yes me and DH but honestly the principle stands, from London to a large coastal village and really, there's so much going on - clubs, groups, volunteer stuff. everybody speaks to you - we worried we'd struggle to be a part of things but honestly, it's been everything we could have hoped for. I think the Internet makes it a lot easier to do your homework and research places that tick your boxes.

We wanted to be by the sea and I specifically wanted some shops I could walk to instead of always having to drive. I'd say go for it. If buying is your choice a halfway option would be renting somewhere before committing to buying. Good luck, I hope it happens for you.

Crikeyalmighty · Today 22:14

That’s a nice house in Avery nice town too
