I am mid fifties and want a new start. No family support. AIBU to think I can find a house by the sea or in a low-crime market town with a maximum budget of £250k? Any ideas?
YABU - budget is too low
YANBU - these places exist

If you want an affordable City then Plymouth is worth looking at. If you're after a smaller town Saltash or Teignmouth worth exploring. All offer great quality of life and affordable housing.

Ventnor on the Isle of Wight is a lovely town right on the coast. Safe area.

Clacton? It's very topical at the moment! www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/89161725

Can recommend Montrose

Filey is a gorgeous seaside town, very safe and you'd have a choice of 2-3 bed houses for your budget. If you looked slightly outside of Filey, in Hunmanby or Muston there's some lovely houses too although perhaps not full fibre broadband yet (it is in Filey). Filey has a train station with direct trains to Scarborough, Hull, Sheffield and Doncaster.

Avoid Plymouth and Portsmouth. You are after smaller little places I’m sure.

I’m interested in this thread as I’d like to do something similar but would have a smaller budget. Also mid 50s and been thinking about it for a few years now. My relationship is strained currently so I just want to run away with my cats.

Filey !! You won’t regret it

quite a long way from anywhere Belfast would be your nearest big shopping centre. But on the sea but stunning scenery and friendly people.

Troon in Scotland is lovely - consistently voted one of the happiest areas in Scotland. Beautiful beaches, nice town and on a direct train to Glasgow.

Troon Is lovely, that house look directly onto a busy rail line though.

Are you dead set on the UK though OP? That kind of budget will get you an amazing villa with an own orange grove in Italy, right on the beach.

That looks lovely. Is Margate an OK area?

Yes, parts of it are fine. Theres been a lot of regeneration in the town over the past decade. However, there are still some dodgier parts/people but to be fair, that will apply to every area.
I moved here 10 years ago and I have the best social life as it's such a friendly place and lots going on. I'm now 63.
The beaches are amazing and we swim in the tidal pool at Walpole all year round.

This is a good site to get the vibe of what's going on

Places I would consider if I had your budget Kingsbridge in Devon, Lyme Regis or Bridport ( you might just afford these) in Dorset or Garstang in Lancashire.

WeAreNumpties · Yesterday 23:29

Definitely not Workington. I live in and love Cumbria but Workington is not a seaside idyll.

Stillreadingalot · Yesterday 23:29

Troon is nicer than Ayr. Largs and Helensburgh are also worth a look.

Hope you are ok and that you and your cats find somewhere lovely to resettle. Maybe a fresh start somewhere new will be just what you need.

Kirkudbright is technically on the River Dee Estuary but you see the sea lovely little market town lots going on especially for older people known as the “artists town” very safe.

This always throws me, because i live on the river Dee estuary....except it's the Welsh one!
We have a Queensferry too.

Ayrshire resident here… Troon, Prestwick, Alloway and Doonfoot but you will struggle to get 3 beds for your budget, 2 would be more likely.

As noted Ayr itself is not what it used to be, the town centre is half empty (like many in the UK), but it has some lovely aspects too with nice parks, walks, decent coffee shops and restaurants, walking/run clubs, few good gyms etc.

Dsis lives in North Berwick, absolutely beautiful but her 2 bed flat was around your budget.

True re prices but the 3 bedroom modern English houses linked to look pokey compared to Victorian Scottish flats.

OP said she didn't want leasehold but Scotland doesn't have leasehold.

Penarth just outside of Cardiff. Pier and lovely little town. Train station for local lines and quick connections into Cardiff
