AIBU to hope for a fresh start by the sea on £250k

I am mid fifties and want a new start. No family support. AIBU to think I can find a house by the sea or in a low-crime market town with a maximum budget of £250k? Any ideas?

Personally I would not want to live in a seaside town again (haha maybe that's obvious!) but yes I am amazed that there are nice-looking houses in nicer places for the OP's budget. Still cannot believe that Pembrokeshire Manorbier/Jameston house! So lovely for really not that much ££.

Just be cautious re area in Workington if considered- I live and work in Cumbria and there are some significant problem areas in Workington- like many places, obviously.

Agree with a PP, look at NI. There are still lots of parts cheaper than england. Stunning scenery, lots of community groups and things to do and beautiful beaches. It's so small youre always close to the beach.

Yes there are still idiots stuck in the past but you have them everywhere. Most people are very welcoming.

NE Scotland coast. You can get a house for 150k easily.

Not Wales; the NHS is pretty bad.

Try Suffolk or Norfolk- hot in summer though. Or Northumberland/North Yorkshire.

Dorset lovely but may be too hot and pricey.

I don’t mind hot or cold but can’t afford pricey. I didn’t realise the NHS in Wales was so bad. I can understand why it’s bad in Cornwall with one hospital for locals and tourists, perhaps long waiting lists.

Some of those look great. I particularly like the Hythe and Folkestone cottages, though tbf I don't know the areas.

Folkstone has really improved over the last few years. Lots of nice cafes, shops etc plus the Harbour area is quite vibrant.

Hythe has a nice seafront, and the pier is lovely. The town centre has suffered like a lot of town centres but there’s a couple of lovely cafes we like.

i don’t know the specific areas where the houses are located. I’m just a day tripper to these places.

The North East coast of Scotland, I would think there would be lots of options in coastal towns/ villages between Fife and Inveness.

Isle of wight .. you'll get lots of people saying 'No its way back in the 1950s ', 'the hospitals rubbish 'it isn't.. We have Internet and everything ! (Even a Waitrose!..)
Yeah, ferries can be expensive but residents get percentage off tickets and Portsmouth Southampton have everything you need if you cant get it here ( though we have next day deliveries also!)

I'd buy this one. Completely impractical and probably freezing cold in the winter. Seems to be next to a big shed. But 1 minute out the door and you're on the beach.

Llandudno is nice.

We lived in Southsea, five minutes from the beach for many years (I was born there) and absolutely loved it. The last house we owned was a big old six bedroom place, close-ish to Portsmouth Grammar where DS went to school. There are some smaller, affordable houses too (we were looking to move back in 2024 and our old house is now unattainable at £1m+ 😮), although these are mostly tiny and a bit further inland. Portsmouth proper, however, is absolutely awful imo and I wouldn't recommend buying there.

We also lived (rurally) in SW Wales (from 2018-2024) and whilst I agree that Narberth and Llandeilo are very nice, our experience wasn't good and once we'd completed our renovation project, we couldn't wait to sell up and move back 'home' to the south coast of England. Several people we know have had a similar experience, in both Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire and have now also returned to England.

What was it about SW Wales, if you don’t mind sharing?

OP - do you have any preferences for Northern long summer nights and dark winter evenings v southern less extreme differences?

Increasing southern heatwaves v much cooler northern temps and increased rain? (the difference is very noticeable - I helped some people move house from a v beautiful Yorkshire location last week because they simply couldn't hack the weather compared to their former Southern location)

Any area at all convenient for visiting friends / pursuing interests? And preferences about being close to train lines / public transport?
