To think this heatwave is a bad as the last?

Last time it got really hot, a couple of weeks ago, schools closed early, there was different uniform, all sorts of safety restrictions.

This time it's just 'get on with it'. I work with young children and we closed at midday last time... This time the kids are so hot and bothered in the afternoon. We have a couple of fans in a huge space which only work for one person if they're almost sitting on top of them, let alone a room of kids. It's too hot to go outside - no breeze.

So AIBU to expect some consistency? If it was unsafe before, it is unsafe now. It's already so hot today.

It isn't less humid. Sweating like a pig in the north of England.

I can’t remember the last time I needed my big coat!

Runsaway · 10/07/2026 19:32

Definitely better this time than last time. Not too bad at all. I’m in London.

Tiggermad · 10/07/2026 19:33

We were lucky enough to be at the coast for the last one. Just lovely hot days, perfect holiday. Fuckign dying through this one! I'm 30 weeks pregnant which is not helping. Can't even sit in the paddling pool because ethe kids won't just sit in the shade in the water keeping cool, they're running all over the garden in the sun and just heating themselves up. It seems to have made them hyper, they won't sit still, won't sleep, just running ragged

Crunchymum · 10/07/2026 20:11

I was just on another thread asking about the lack of weather warnings.

From my limited knowledge there were a few factors last time that put us under a red warning - high humidity and high dew point (as well as measured temperatures and night time temperatures) being the main two - that aren't as high this time round.

It's very hot, I haven't had a decent night's sleep in ages, I am miserable and feel quite sick come evening time but I genuinely don't think it's as hot as it was two weeks ago.

The one thing for me that is equally bad, if not worse this time is the night time heat. It is unbearable.

jay55 · 10/07/2026 21:23

I’m feeling worse this time, I think because my place is still warm from the last.

GinPin2 · 10/07/2026 22:16

Worse here in Dorset. We were even mentioned on Sky News yesterday!

BitterTits · 10/07/2026 22:19

Yes, and my DC had to do a run outdoors this afternoon. Just sorted stuff out in the garden and it's still hot.

narcASD · 10/07/2026 22:33

It's definitely not as humid but I'm struggling with the lack of sleep and skin irritation due to the constant sweating. My 13yo is covered in prickly heat, her school have said normal uniform to commence from Monday!

It will still be 29/30 next week, I think it's ridiculous they are in forcing the need to wear blazer & ties.

Livpool · 10/07/2026 22:34

Good as the last, yes

It's the house that's getting to me

Can't relax
Can't do anything cos you feel so uncomfortable and hot
Not productive whatsoever
Stick to the settee
No let up at night

Agreed. All I can do is listen to my audiobook while eating cold yogurt.

Made so many mistakes in work this past month - ny brain turned to mushy peas.

LightningTree · 10/07/2026 22:44

Well, in the West Midlands it’s technically not as bad because the peak temperatures are lower, but I agree it doesn’t feel much different.

Kickinthenostalgia · 10/07/2026 23:01

Dd had a friend over earlier as they had inset day, they were in the pool and sunbathing. I was just watching countdown but I was so hot, I had my arm across my eyes just listening, I felt like I was melting so I popped into my bedroom where one of the portable air cons is just to get some air, dd and her friend came to find me and said they were worried because they saw me in the front room one minute and gone the next. It’s cooler outside now, where I am in the south east coast but the house just isn’t getting the breeze.

GoldInYourSmile · 10/07/2026 23:24

Currently holidaying in the Scottish Highlands and the warmest it’s been is 17 degrees…it’s bliss in comparison. Thanking my lucky stars we picked this week and next as hear it’s 32 degrees at home. Really hoping it breaks when we get back.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 11/07/2026 07:45

The last time I was in India, there was a ceiling fan in my room which was far more effective than the air con. Right now, I'm in a hotel in Paris for a couple of nights. Has great air con so going to sleep well.

Heyhelga · 11/07/2026 07:49

This heatwave feels more humid where as the previous heatwave felt more about the extreme heat.

Forza49 · 11/07/2026 08:01

I work in an older building with no air handling. We have blinds and a fan on every desk (to fan the hot computer air around). Management say no aircon for environmental reasons. As the week has gone on, the starting temp in the office has gone up and up as it does not ventilate overnight. We started in a room temperature of 29° at 8:30 this morning. It got to 33°. Our instructions are to drink plenty, take breaks, and let management know if it gets to 35°. WTF. If we were dogs in a car, someone would have smashed the windows.

Lalalalanda · 10/07/2026 08:04

The precedent has been set now. Everytime it gets above 30c, schools will think they can/should close.
It is uncomfortably hot but life goes on. Relaxing uniform for staff and students should be a given when it’s this hot though, that is very easy to implement.

I really don't think they do think that, given the vast majority stayed open. There might be areas where a lot closed a fortnight ago, but most (all?) of England was above 30 degrees and far more schools were open than shut. I've not heard of any school closures this time and it's been above 30 where I am this week. Incidentally, when we stayed fully open in June we got complaints from parents.

BiteSizedLife · 11/07/2026 08:06

I think schools closed because it breached 35 not 30

Anyway, imagine my delight at waking to see full cloud cover this morning 😍

short lived though...:-(

Could I ask whereabouts you are in Dorset? I am in Christchurch and although we are on the coast, it is still unbearably hot. Nights are just awful - the only sweet time is between about 4.30 and 7.30 in the morning if there is a breeze. Cannot wait for the rain!

I'm another one in Dorset on the coast. This heatwave is overwhelming and worse than the last. Not such extreme temperatures but the relentless heat is very draining.

There is a slight breeze although it is not enough. It is unusually quiet here because I think it's too hot for anybody to do anything!

Weymouth, I am waking up about 4.30 and down my allotment by 5 am. I come home at 7 am when it is too hot to work😥

Are you Christchurch or Weymouth? We have a slight breeze, yes everywhere is very quiet.

VividDeer · 11/07/2026 12:53

It's not as hot, the met office have not issued a red warning. Its still bloody boiling though.
