To think this heatwave is a bad as the last?

Last time it got really hot, a couple of weeks ago, schools closed early, there was different uniform, all sorts of safety restrictions.

This time it's just 'get on with it'. I work with young children and we closed at midday last time... This time the kids are so hot and bothered in the afternoon. We have a couple of fans in a huge space which only work for one person if they're almost sitting on top of them, let alone a room of kids. It's too hot to go outside - no breeze.

So AIBU to expect some consistency? If it was unsafe before, it is unsafe now. It's already so hot today.

Its slighly cooler then last time here. Last time it reached 37, this time its reaching 31 and less humid. Dont get me wrong its still too hot. I'm still struggling, my kids are coping better this time though

It worse. Much worse. I think purely because of the duration - 2 weeks of sustained heat means that the buildings aren’t cooling down.

Definitely not as bad here in Surrey.

Nor in my corner of Sussex. There's a pleasant breeze here, although it may be different down in the town centre.

I think it’s different this time as it seems it’s only hot north of Birmingham it’s not the whole of the UK. It was cool and overcast where I am yesterday and today is just pleasant.

I’m in the south (on the coast!) and it’s been above 30 everyday this week. Average temperatures down here are usually peaking at 24/25.

Zov · 10/07/2026 10:19

I think it's a bit worse. It's gonna be up to 35C here today (Midlands!) My 2 DC are down in London today, and it's only getting to 27C there. (Only LOL!) I mean 27C is still hot, but not as bad as 35C! 😬

The humidity is 73% at the moment! 😫Currently 26C in the house.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/07/2026 10:21

It’s as bad here- we’re in South London - and it’s longer.

I can’t see why everyone has decided it doesn’t matter any more!

Still, the billionaires and multi millionaires must continue to make their profits and sod the planet.

In our area we are relying on older teachers. The younger ones are jumping ship. I was saying to my GC teacher, yesterday afternoon, that I don't know how they do it, she is 61 and there are older teachers. They get involved in after school etc activities and are just brilliant. Start to tell them that they have to be in overly hot classrooms and I can see the deciding to retire. Places getting hotter hasn't come out if the blue. Our neighbouring council has given the go ahead for more woodland to be lost to housing. That puts the temperature up. I lived through the 70s heatwaves, we had trees to give shade and fields to play in. None of the trees that made up the roads that were tree lined, throughout my childhood, are still there. We lost a lot to Dutch elm etc but we really need to be thinking about population levels, housing strategies and trees. A bit of wild planting along the motorways and roundabouts won't cut it. Buildings need air cooling systems etc.

Yes, my colleagues who are on the south coast were whinging about the heat yesterday and then i found out that it only got to 26 there yesterday, meanwhile here we are much further north and we got to enjoy 33 degrees

Again, we used to have trees in our shopping areas. We've just had a revamp of the whole region (Knowsley) and they've taken the trees up. Luckily huyton has got swamps and bats, or there'd be nothing left.

It’s not as hot as the last one, it had more days above 34C and night temperatures were hotter. We can’t keep closing schools every time it gets above 30.

Where I am it’s the same if not worse. So I agree it’s different messaging / not as panicky.

But overall I do think we should just get on with it. We can’t just stop the whole nation for weeks at a time.

BuffaloCauliflower · 10/07/2026 10:30

It’s not as hot no, but is still very hot. My son’s school in Berkshire is closing early, after lunch yesterday and today. Classrooms are 32c at 6.30am without anyone in them. I’m struggling more this week than I was in the hotter week, I’m not sure why. I think it’s all too much for too long now

It's been horribly hot here for almost a week, near Oxford.

We need to start building infrastructure that works in the heat. This is the new normal.

Aircon in all public buildings, schools, hospitals etc. public transport that is adequately air conditioned, not like the trains we have now where they regularly get to 40+ degrees! Cities designed for cooling, not the heat traps we have now. We need to make major changes if we’re expected to just get on with it.

weareallcats · 10/07/2026 10:41

It’s horrible. The country is just not set up for this kind of heat, especially when it is so prolonged. I’ve been wondering whether there will be a shift towards a more Mediterranean lifestyle if this continues, eg siesta and later nights. Yes, we have to adapt, but adapting shouldn’t be just putting up with it - it’s miserable and can be dangerous.

stillchasingdereksheppard · 10/07/2026 10:41

It's much less humid. 3/4 degrees lower temps and the nights are cooling sufficiently to prevent massive heat build up in buildings.
Life has to go on.
I work in the emergency services and summer is out busiest demand period. We have a huge spike in demand over heatwaves. When the schools & childcare was closed our kids don't just magicly exist. We have to be at home looking after them and not at work when the public call for service.
None of us have air con, we were all still wearing uniform etc the only difference was we were running creches ad Hoc around our teams to try and look after the kids and offer a service still. It was frankly ridiculous!

Kids can be kept safe at school and they will cope. My kids school are all in PE kit, are using shaded areas for outdoor play, keeping them hydrated. I really appreciate them staying open & think they're doing a fantastic job is adapting things to manage through the hotter weather just like everyone else that does essential jobs.

pambeesleyhalpert · 10/07/2026 10:43

It is hot but here the last heatwave was 39 and this is 30

Surely it being so busy is the biggest sign that we as a country can’t cope with this heat?

Would you rather there was no emergency services available for those that do need service?
Summer is always our busiest period but of course more people out of work and school usually means more accidents etc.
Closing schools is not the answer. Kids still need an education even in hot places.
Am I in favour of scrapping ridiculously expensive school uniforms and dressing children up in uncomfortable itchy hot clothes for school like most other countries - yep!
Do I wish all schools / offices / hospitals etc had air con - yep!
Should all houses have air con - yep probably!
Do I think there is public money to make that happen - absolutely not.
If you wanted to fundraise for your local school / hospital / whatever other place to install air con I'm sure they'd be thrilled and very grateful!
If not - what are you expecting?

Abyzou · 10/07/2026 10:50

Ridiculous. So if the whole summer were above 30, you'd close schools for the duration? Maybe put the whole country on a standstill? Just get on with it, jesus. It's a bit hot. Yes, I'm in the south, fyi.

Air cons are the answer, not moaning and boarding up.

DD goes to school, and out with friends after. Drinks lots of water. Haven't heard a single moan, not during this 'heatwave', not the previous ones (yes, the schools were closed, but she was out and about all day). It's always the teachers, the moaniest profession of them all.

That’s not what I said at all…

YourAmplePlumPoster · 10/07/2026 10:56

You have to remember there is an ideological opposition to air conditioning from the net zero zealots. They'd rather people died of heatstroke than install air conditioning. It's why Paris is so poorly air conditioned. The unions are now threatening to go on strike.

tsmainsqueeze · 10/07/2026 10:56

HoskinsChoice · 10/07/2026 08:41

You are right, they should be consistent. Last time was a complete overreaction. Kids will be hot, bothered and ratty at home too. It's just weather. We need to teach them a bit more resilience, it's just life and is going to get hotter for them throughout their lifetime so they need to get used to it.

So, this time they've got it right, last time they got it wrong.

Sometimes you just cannot show resilience when you are so hot you could faint/vomit/ can't think straight......
Unless schools put in sufficient air con ,blinds and fans , and relax their ridiculously strict uniform rules kids however resilient are never going to feel comfortable in these high temperatures and they aren't going to be learning as they would in a comfortable environment.

Happyjoe · 10/07/2026 10:56

As my friend in Italy said, she feels sorry for us Brits as a, we are not used to it and b, not set up for it! No air con in homes, lots of homes have carpets etc.

I can see air conditioning companies making a fortune in the next few years!

But no, schools shouldn't keep closing, people and schools need to adapt.

In the north and it's as bad as before

So am I and it really isn’t. There a constant wind as usual.

Well ok

You must be somewhere different then
