To think this heatwave is a bad as the last?

Last time it got really hot, a couple of weeks ago, schools closed early, there was different uniform, all sorts of safety restrictions.

This time it's just 'get on with it'. I work with young children and we closed at midday last time... This time the kids are so hot and bothered in the afternoon. We have a couple of fans in a huge space which only work for one person if they're almost sitting on top of them, let alone a room of kids. It's too hot to go outside - no breeze.

So AIBU to expect some consistency? If it was unsafe before, it is unsafe now. It's already so hot today.

In our area we are relying on older teachers. The younger ones are jumping ship. I was saying to my GC teacher, yesterday afternoon, that I don't know how they do it, she is 61 and there are older teachers. They get involved in after school etc activities and are just brilliant. Start to tell them that they have to be in overly hot classrooms and I can see the deciding to retire. Places getting hotter hasn't come out if the blue. Our neighbouring council has given the go ahead for more woodland to be lost to housing. That puts the temperature up. I lived through the 70s heatwaves, we had trees to give shade and fields to play in. None of the trees that made up the roads that were tree lined, throughout my childhood, are still there. We lost a lot to Dutch elm etc but we really need to be thinking about population levels, housing strategies and trees. A bit of wild planting along the motorways and roundabouts won't cut it. Buildings need air cooling systems etc.

Fucking Sadiq Khan was banging on about ppl going to cool spaces on Twitter forgetting that you have to walk in the blistering heat to get to them

A short period in the heat then a prolonged period in the cool is much better than sitting in the heat all day.

purpleme12 · 10/07/2026 14:25

It's the house that's getting to me

Can't relax
Can't do anything cos you feel so uncomfortable and hot
Not productive whatsoever
Stick to the settee
No let up at night

JenniferBooth · 10/07/2026 14:25

In in a top floor flat where its been hot since the 16th June It never cooled down. Ive developed a bilateral ear infection because of it and have partially lost my hearing

purpleme12 · 10/07/2026 14:29

Because of the heat?? I don't know you could lose your hearing from the heat! How does the heat affect your hearing can I ask?

What temperature is it in your flat?

But I'm sorry that's happened that sounds rubbish

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 10/07/2026 14:31

The inside of my house is as hot compared to last according to my thermometer x

SadiraOfTyr · 10/07/2026 14:36

Well, it is different in my area. Last time we had highs of 39, this time it's only 32 which is a huge difference - especially at night. This one is slated to last a lot longer though. All our secondary schools are still in PE kit thankfully but not doing the half days as it doesn't get quite so hellish in the afternoon.

Extreme heat and high humidity increase the risk of ear infections. Which can result in hearing loss.

purpleme12 · 10/07/2026 14:38

Wow that's worrying

Trapped SWEAT humidity or water can cause ear infections Its the infection that has fucked my hearing I have it in both ears I have been prescribed antibiotics which i finish tommorrow Ear drops could not be prescribed because my ears are both so swollen the GP couldnt see my eardrums so didnt want to risk it. A week ago the pain was excrutiating I called NHS 111 and they took 13 and a half hours to call me back which was after all the chemists were shut so i had to put up with it over last weekend and saw a GP on Monday. He told me to come back if hearing doesnt improve

2026me · 10/07/2026 14:54

I’ve been thinking the same, school finished at 12 last time, now it’s just in all day as normal with sports day, dance and PE etc, although they are still allowed to wear PE kit.
Daughter coming home a sweaty mess exhausted every day. I can’t imagine how bad it is with all those warm bodies crammed in together! House is hot enough when I get home mid afternoon with all fans going blinds closed and I’m still avoiding hoovering or anything strenuous. Really fed up of it now it’s making me miserable and I’m usually a sun lover. Not to mention my car air con is broken! 😭

That's interesting. My ears are blocked too.

it’s less humid or perhaps we have acclimatised?

It isn't less humid. Sweating like a pig in the north of England.

purpleme12 · 10/07/2026 16:55

The house is incredibly oppressive

Mokel · 10/07/2026 16:57

I just want a night where I don’t need to have a fan on. My flat used to be cool in this weather. It’s not now. 29c a thermometer is reading. This is with curtains closed, windows open at night.

Back to the school uniform. for schools to allow students to wear their PE kit instead of uniform, I bet many students have just the ONE PE top and ONE pair of shorts. As during other times of the school year, it’s probably worn a few hours per week. So it needs washing every day. As my friend’s DD has only one top for PE. She puts it in the wash on a 15 min programme on her washing machine when gets home

LuckyHazelFox · 10/07/2026 17:02

It's bloody intolerable. Roll on tomorrow's more moderate temperature.

CrispySquid · 10/07/2026 17:13

I’m a teacher in the South East and despite the temperature being round about the same as last time, this wave this week has felt less uncomfortable and not as bad. It was the humidity that really killed it last time. It’s the humidity that leads to the amber alert or the red alert because sweat can’t evaporate as quickly as in dry heat because of the shallow concentration gradient so you can’t cool down.

Humid conditions with hot temp is what triggers the health alert. That’s why 40 degrees in the rainforest feels way worse than 40 degrees in the desert.

Regardless, business, hospitals, schools, shops all need to remain open going forward if we are going to have this type of weather regularly. I understand why some schools closed the other week but this week there is no need to close schools. It’s not felt as bad at all. Unpleasant but nowhere near shutting things down for.

Didimum · 10/07/2026 17:28

It’s not as hot as the last one. And the alert isn’t to as high a level. The issue with the last one was that the heat does increased the ‘feels like’ temperature, which is more of a threat to health.

Gluteustothemaximus40 · 10/07/2026 17:51

It feels as bad as the last. The temps we are recording indoors are as bad as the last. Wearing PE kit and having a couple of extra water breaks makes little difference. Teachers are really struggling to teach, physically cannot use many classrooms on top floors of buildings, kids are bright red, being sent home for headaches and vomiting. It’s not ‘let’s have a day off it’s hot’ this seriously needs addressing going forward, I cannot work in a physical role like this when the indoor temperatures are as hot as outside or even hotter. Reached 34 today. And over the weekend, more relentless heat, more build up and monday is going to be hell. There is no learning going on.

But it’s ok, because some shit about 1976 and resilience.

Doggymummar · 10/07/2026 18:00

No because it's not humid it's been plesant

Mokel · 10/07/2026 18:49

For me the heat still gets trapped in my flat. Got 3 fans on the go.

Think WFH doesn’t help with keeping my flat cool as use laptop and a monitor. It’s difficult to work from just laptop

Boxoffrogs21 · 10/07/2026 19:10

I’m in southeast England, urban area. It’s nowhere near as bad as it was last time in school (and we were only in on the Tuesday before it got properly hot), though we’ve cancelled Sports’ Day!

I think it’s a few things:
Lower humidity
Slightly lower peak temps (we have been getting to 32 ish but it was 36 last time)
Cooler night temps - though last night was brutal, as no breeze at all
We’ve acclimatised a bit because it hasn’t dropped below 25 in weeks, whereas last time we leapt up very quickly from quite cool temps, so therefore doesn’t feel so bad

We haven’t been in full uniform though - I can’t understand schools who are!

RudolphTheReindeer · 10/07/2026 19:21

We had 32-37 degrees last time but it's been around 27-29 this week so it's not been as bad here. Some areas seem to still be mid 30s. I feel for you.

bronnibro · 10/07/2026 19:24

Today feels cooler, in SW London, but im fed up too, I HATE being sweaty!! It's the grossest feeling and I've had enough now! Plus hard sleeping but it did definitely feel cooler or less humid today which is welcome

firstofallimadelight · 10/07/2026 19:27

Agree last time my son’s school closed at 12 every day. This time we got a email saying that ‘because it’s hot’ will not be accepted as a reason for absence.
My sons school did sports day yesterday 🙄
