In thinking the worst thing about this hot weather is smelly people?

sweetkitty · Today 16:35

I’m on a train back from London after a few days break and the whole place seemed to smell of BO, I know it’s very hot and sticky but it’s vile.

sitting on this train there’s been several people sitting/standing beside us who have been so smelly they’ve made me feel literally sick. I don’t know how hard it is to wash once a day and stick deodorant on?
There was one man, well dressed stand beside me whilst I was sitting and I could smell what I thought was poo off him like a not wiping/festering in the heat situation. Then there’s the BO/stale fags/stale beer delight we had on the way down.

I know I’m tired and perimenopausal but subjecting other people to your smelly body is horrible IMO

It's unpleasant but I'd hardly say that it's the worst thing about the heatwave when people are suffering and even dying from the heat.

Lauren912 · Today 17:38

It's not unreasonable to find the smells repulsive. However, I think you're being a tad unreasonable in this heat.
Everywhere is roasting at the moment and public transport is even worse for the heat. I'm finding that I'm needing two showers a day now so that I can get into bed feeling clean.
I get the bus to work and in the 20 minutes it takes for my commute, I found that I was sweating so much on the bus + 10minute walk to my office building, that by the time the sweat was then drying on my tshirt, I'd feel like I had BO by mid-morning. Add on an entire workday in an office with no air conditioning and you can imagine how sweaty everyone feels by the end of the work day, even when you have showered and applied deodorant.
The only solution I have found this week is to wear a sleeveless top on my commute to work (so my underarms can breath), and then change into a fresh top once I've arrived in the office. Luckily it seems to have done the trick!

I have to say that I normally have no problems but there is something special about the London tube that usually leaves me smelling absolutely foul - are there bacteria lurking in the air waiting to attach themselves to the poor traveller ?

and a side question - how are people meant to cross London with suitcases and rucksacks? It’s hardly out fault that the transport system of the uk is so London centric

NameChangeScot · Today 17:45

Yanbu! We're at a theme park this week and people honk! There are lots of school trips and teenage boys in the queue at 10am this morning stank of BO, that's really not acceptable diet thing. Morning showers, deodorant, clean t-shirt is so basic. Some of them are going around in jeans and hoodies. Those buses back will be horrid 🤢.

Electricsausages · Today 17:45

all I can say is
yr6 🤢

Well yeah I stink at the end of work because it's physical and I end up dripping with sweat. There's nothing I can do about it. I don't want to be!

But don't you change your top, maybe use a wipe and deodorant before travelling home and subjecting others to the smell.

CanOnlyBeMyself · Today 17:51

Polyester workwear and extreme heat are not the best combo are they? I’m not sure everyone can help it in this weather OP, and a lot of people will be feeling self-conscious about it. Have you tried wearing a neck fan? As a fellow smell-sensitive person I do find it helps to waft odours away somewhat.

Any1ForTennis · Today 17:54

I pull the neck of my tshirt up and cover my nose, I don't care if the person gets embarrassed by me making it obvious.

Spraying perfume on my tshirt as I leave the house helps!

ilbehonest · Today 18:03

Aww I bet all the dying starving children who are scared for thier life and won't see their loved ones again in their war torn countries really feel for you having to put up with this. My heart breaks for you.

writingsonthewall · Today 18:05

Omg yes. I’m on a train and it’s not good

backformoreofthesame · Today 18:05

Well that’s clever reply isn’t it? As long as you are not dying it’s ok? Chin up and carry on old gals

basiically · Today 18:31

For me anytime of the year its the over smell of deodrant and perfumes, on men or women.

aliceyyyy2654 · Today 18:32

YANBU, I was walking to work at 8:20 this morning and a man smelt so bad I had to stop and physically gagged. How someone can smell so bad in the morning I just don’t understand

BeBluntCoralBird · Today 18:41

Lots of workplaces have showers now so easy to have a shower in the day and freshen up before leaving.

I have used the work showers quite a few times. The best thing is not having to clean it afterwards like at home!

Jackiepumpkinhead · Today 18:45

I don’t think it’s the worse thing about this weather, but that sweaty shit smell is absolutely disgusting.

ImPamDoove · Today 17:25

My son was on the tube yesterday and said there was a fug of BO 🤢. I reckon it’s partly because so many people have eschewed traditional anti-perspirant deodorants for ‘natural’ ones that frankly, don’t cut the mustard.

Edited

The natural deodorants don’t stop you sweating, but they should stop the smell.

IceLollly · Today 18:56

DD has been in a school show and the teacher has had to say several times that they need to wash every day and put on deodorant every day. DD said its been bad, especially as some are dancing.

Health reasons I can understand.
Financial reasons for not washing daily?
You can buy soap for less than 50p.

Yes but hot water costs. Whether that's to put on a clothes wash or to have a shower. And washing powder's not cheap either.

Having said that a lot of people have no excuse and don't wash or wear clean clothes often enough. There are some lovely MN threads on the subject too.

RudolphTheReindeer · Today 19:13

NameChangeScot · Today 17:50

No but I also generally drive. Even changing clothes and freshening up it's not the same as a proper shower and who's carrying around multiple sets of clothes to change every day? Change when you get to work, change before you leave work (if I train it rather than drive) it's not exactly practical. I can't just change my top and suddenly the smell goes away either I sweat all over (unfortunately!).

CheesusBeesus · Today 19:17

TBF since I hit mid forties I’ve really struggled with BO. I used to use perspirex which worked but it started giving me a really bad rash and I haven’t found anything else that’s worked.
I wear clean tops and bra daily, use deodorant and antiperspirant, carry deodorant wipes, shower twice a day and literally scrub my armpits with soap and a sponge but when I dry my pits the towel smells of that horrible beef and onion BO smell. It’s as though it’s ingrained in the skin somehow.
I assume it’s a hormone thing as I had similar shortly after having DC1 but I hate it and am really self conscious about it. I’ve stopped wearing vest tops and sleeveless dresses despite the heat as I feel the skin on skin makes it worse. I’m at a loss to know what to do.

ohyesido · Today 19:18

I immediately thought of the Central line before I even clicked on your post

squirrelchops2 · Today 19:20

One word.

Crackbatter

Anononony · Today 19:23

People need to discover the wonders of perspi-guard, I always sweat through whatever deodorant/antiperspirant I used until finding this one and it genuinely works, my pits don't just not smell - they are dry!

My 13yo has started using it instead of roll on antiperspirant and does the same for him, he used to smell quite quickly but not any more

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · Today 19:24

Alcohol not being used in deodorants anymore is my particular bug bear. At 64 I rarely sweat now, but soon after going out in this heat I can feel a glimmer of wet under my arms that is annoying and I'm sure didn't used to be the case.

nomas · Today 19:26

The smell of the hoi polloi is bearable when clean skin gets sweaty, not so much when unwashed skin gets sweaty.
