In thinking the worst thing about this hot weather is smelly people?

I’m on a train back from London after a few days break and the whole place seemed to smell of BO, I know it’s very hot and sticky but it’s vile.

sitting on this train there’s been several people sitting/standing beside us who have been so smelly they’ve made me feel literally sick. I don’t know how hard it is to wash once a day and stick deodorant on?
There was one man, well dressed stand beside me whilst I was sitting and I could smell what I thought was poo off him like a not wiping/festering in the heat situation. Then there’s the BO/stale fags/stale beer delight we had on the way down.

I know I’m tired and perimenopausal but subjecting other people to your smelly body is horrible IMO

Well some people can't help it, and some people can.

You have unrealistic expectations, this issue has always been there. School was shocking!

The worst thing about the heatwave is much worse than this, things like excess deaths and wildfires bother me more!

TigTails · Today 16:41

YANBU, some people are absolute scrotes.

VodkaAndSoda · Today 16:42

It’s perfectly understandable that people may not be completely fresh after a day at work / out in the heat.

If that’s the worst thing you have to cope with you’re very fortunate.

HahahahaHaaland · Today 16:44

Makes me miss the days when people smoked freely everywhere.

Dribblo · Today 16:44

We’re all hot, it’s unpleasant for everyone. No one wants to be on that train. That should unite us, not divide us. And it’ll be cold and raining again soon, so don’t worry.

MandemChickenShop · Today 16:45

not the worst thing by some margin!

RudolphTheReindeer · Today 16:45

Well yeah I stink at the end of work because it's physical and I end up dripping with sweat. There's nothing I can do about it. I don't want to be!

LlynTegid · Today 16:49

I don't think it is the worst thing. However, I see it as one of the biggest obstacles to getting more people to use public transport.

palron · Today 16:51

OP, they could be thinking the same of you! None of us is completely as fresh as the minute we got out of the shower these days, especially on a crowded train after a long hot day down the mines.

We all sweat in this heat, and so do you. OK you may not be as bad as others but you wouldn't be human if you didn't sweat, it's good for you

sweetkitty · Today 16:53

Oh I know I’m probably BU, just had to take a migraine tablet so the heat and lack of sleeps definitely getting to me. We’re just not set up for it in this country, was in Spain last week so much better, it’s the unpredictability for us in this country.
Yes it’s lovely trying to teach in a classroom South facing, no blinds, no air con or even a fan.

I work in a school where the social norm for the kids has been always clean, always fresh for years - so much so that someone with body odour, unwashed clothes or messy hair would have caused discreet welfare communications, the opportunity to change into clean uniform, access to washing facilities and gifts of toiletries straight away; it was so rare that it pretty much always meant there was something to be concerned about or to at least check they were OK.

They all came in this morning clean as usual. By the afternoon, it was noticeable.

It's fucking summer. Heatstroke, heat exhaustion, dehydration and sunburn are the worst things, not that people who have been hot at work don't smell like they've just stepped out the shower.

TwilightSkies · Today 17:03

Fresh sweat doesn’t smell very much.

The rank fusty B.O is people who don’t shower every day.

Serious medical issues aside, there’s no excuse for it. Even a sink wash is better than nothing! A lot of people just can’t be bothered. I’ve seen it a lot on MN over the years, people don’t wash daily but say they smell ‘fine’. I’m sure most of them don’t smell fine at all!

So you probably smell too then unless you're managing to shower before you start the journey home.

Comeonelieen · Today 17:07

Haven’t really noticed this myself (fortunately)

Pistachiocake · Today 17:07

Some people genuinely do have issues that make them smell worse. Some people have health issues or financial issues meaning keeping clean isn't as easy.
Pre 2006, places tended to be smellier due to smoke, but then fewer people seemed to be on public transport/places were often less crowded, so you didn't get as close to people so didn't notice smell as much.

Port1aCastis · Today 17:09

So you must also smell

I used to commute in London. Very horrid on the tube. Very crowded. And yes, in smoking days. You could feel the sweat trickling down your back. Especially if something went wrong on the tube/trains. You could always bank on someone trying to get on with a suitcase or large backpack during the rush hour too. The slam door rapist special trains were just as crowded and hellish if you had to stand in hot weather.
Late at night when people came out of the pub ( drinking culture prevailed back then) and the air was cooler the worst thing on the train was a chicken leg landing in your lap thrown over the seats. That and people screeching loudly into their mobiles.

The obstacle is price!

Monty36 · Today 17:17

Do people open their windows during the day at work or home ? Or do they only open them in the evening when the air is cooler outside.
But not get any breeze if not ?

GeorgeClooneyshouldhavemarriedme · Today 17:17

I'm with you OP.
It's not the worst thing in the world, but it's unnecessary to be minging.
Fresh BO is one thing, stale BO on unwashed clothes is another.
Reeking of smoke is vile too.

CakeDream · Today 17:20

I can't bear the stink either. I watched a TikTok recently where people were actually bragging about how little they wash, so I'm not surprised the heat isn't going to make them any less lazy.
Soap and water work wonders, along with antiperspirant, deodorant, perfume—anything, really.
I just find it disgusting.

Health reasons I can understand.
Financial reasons for not washing daily?
You can buy soap for less than 50p.

ImPamDoove · Today 17:25

My son was on the tube yesterday and said there was a fug of BO 🤢. I reckon it’s partly because so many people have eschewed traditional anti-perspirant deodorants for ‘natural’ ones that frankly, don’t cut the mustard.

Hollowvoice · Today 17:27

I'm not currently working. I've done some bits round the house today, nothing major and just had to go change my top after I caught a whiff of myself. Would definitely have been worse if I'd been working and commuting with no chance to do anything about it!

Glitchymn1 · Today 17:33

If you shower, put on clean clothes at the start of the day you shouldn’t smell surely?
