From all the comments about different collection dates we are "lucky" in our northern city. Our schedule is:
Black general waste bins - weekly
Green recycling bins - weekly
Brown garden waste - every two weeks from around March to November
Everything can go into the one recycling bin. Glass, cans, plastic (codes 1, 2, 4 and 5), paper and cardboard. Also, used aerosol cans, margarine tubs, jogurt pots, etc. No putting them in separate recycling boxes. I just tip it all in.
They haven't yet rolled out food waste collection in our area.
And they will do a certain number of bulky waste collections for free if booked. Helpful when disposing of one off things like sofas and furniture (which must be broken down though and each section counts as an item).
But on the whole, so long as collections not missed, seems a good way to go.
As it's just me I only put out about half a black bin bags worth of waste, the rest is recycled.
But I do hate it, if someone puts their excess in my bin, especially if not bagged properly, or should have been taken to the tip not put in household waste bins. It gets taken out and put next to their bin unless they have asked politely for permission to put normal excess waste in my bin.
