CF neighbour AIBU

AIBU?
Our general waste bin is collected every three weeks, and recycling every two weeks. It’s a relatively new system, and as a family of four, our black bin is always full by collection day.
Our black bin was collected last Tuesday, so we still have another two weeks to go before it’s emptied again.
Anyway, back to the AIBU bit. My CF neighbour put two black bin bags in our bin (one small and one large). Her bin is already full, so I think she’s having a clear-out.
I didn’t actually see her do it, but my neighbour from across the road, who I’m friends with, did.
I’m not sure whether I should say anything, but it’s really annoyed me. Am I being petty?
They’re elderly, so maybe she doesn’t want to go to the tip, but it also means we’ll probably have to make a trip to the tip ourselves now.

I have to confess that occasionally I put a bag in my neighbour’s bin, but only if it is about 11pm the night before bin day and her bin has plenty of space. She lives alone and I have a six year old and she seems to generate much less rubbish than us!

Looks like I’ve found the CF who keeps doing this to my lovelyMIL!

Ok, if your bin is out in the street, ready for collection, let it slide but if your bin is still on your property. hell no!! Have a word.

Did you read the original post?

Our black bin rarely has more than 2 mid size bags in it. How do black bins get so full?

I don’t ask her if it’s very late but I do if I think there’s a chance she might want to put extra rubbish in, of course.

How do you know whether there's a chance she might put more rubbish in or not? And does she always say yes when you ask her? To be honest I would find it creepy living next door to someone that was trying to track my bin habits and make guesses about whether I had any more rubbish to put out or not. And it would be bloody annoying that one time I was going on holiday and was up early putting out last minute rubbish and there was no space for it because my cf neighbour decided that she could use my leftover bin space whenever she wanted to.

I think many people will have their sorting of rubbish and bin collections changed to be stricter and longer between collections. I think the government is rolling out the same system across the country and standardizing it. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/simpler-household-recycling-rules-come-into-force-across-england

I hate the new system - too long between collections. Recycling every 2 weeks is ok for us, but for refuse I do a run to the tip (usually once a week sometimes two) because I hate it smelling in the bin especially with the heat we've had recently. Even well wrapped and doubled bagged it starts to smell. Going out in the car to do that isn't environmentally friendly of course, but I can legally do that, nothing I can do about the bin collections (or lack of) apart from complain.

Cardiff council has generously provided us with this bin situation:

  1. Black bin for general waste, collected every fortnight. Can hold 3 medium sized bags.
  2. Brown caddy for food waste collected weekly.
  3. Blue (reusable plastic) bag for card and paper, collected weekly.
  4. Red (reusable plastic) bag for hard plastic and tins, collected weekly.
  5. Small blue bin for glass, collected fortnightly.
  6. Purple bags for hygiene waste, collected weekly. They can be stored in a yellow bin, but not presented in it.
  7. Green bin for garden waste, collected fortnightly for half the year.
They're now talking about a separate 8th bin for soft plastics. I feel like an unpaid employee of the council with all the waste management in my house of 5 people.

If you’re going to run out of space yourselves, and there are definitely two bags that aren’t yours in the bin, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just have a word and hand them back?

It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, but we just don’t generate much bin waste, so even though our general waste collection is fortnightly, our bin is always 3/4 empty. Where we would struggle would be if someone was putting stuff in our recycling bin.

Ah, but what size bin do you have? If OP's council is like mine, they haven't just switched to a 3 week collection schedule, they have also swapped the original 240L bin for the 120L one. Needless to say, this sort of thing would kick off a proper feud in my street 😂

Thebinisrightthere · Today 08:42

100% you have to say something. They are using your property & causing you problems by their own selfishness. They could have asked if they could use your bin or even if you happened to be going to the tip at all. If you don't stay something blow they'll continue to do it

rainbowstardrops · Today 08:42

If they’re elderly and generally decent neighbours, I’d take the bags out and tell them that they can go in your bin just before collection if there’s room.
If they’re usually CFers then I’d just put them in their garden!

Sasha07 · Today 08:51

My elderly neighbour did this in my first home. I just dumped them back over her back garden fence. We didn't get on, otherwise I'd have approached it nicer.

No way! I want to live where you do 😂 recycling is like a military operation. Glass. Paper. Plastic. Food. Keeping up with the different weeks also adds to my mental load!

me too! We have to pay for large item removal. Up until earlier this year we were the same as the poster, put out as much as you like, but now its a bit of a pain because our council recycles so little.

KitsyWitsy · Today 08:53

Just put them by their gate. Cheeky sods.

Washingforweeks · Today 08:56

Bitzee · Yesterday 22:02

Is it??? We get everything taken weekly and no limits for how much you can put out except you can only do bulky stuff like a sofa 3 times a year. 3 weeks of rubbish in this heat is utterly disgusting. And must be really hard to manage the quantities hence this nonsense with the CF neighbour trying to use OP’s bins.

Same. Our general waste and food is weekly, recycling every 2 weeks along with garden waste.

You’re being a Cheeky Fucker! You should at least ask your neighbour first.

Let me guess.. you’re a lazy so and so who can’t be bothered to sort the recycling so everything gets chucked in a black bin bag and you use the neighbours bin because obviously yours is already full.

Lifeomars · Today 09:17

Crispandco · Yesterday 21:34

It’s ridiculous, we have a food bin, collected every week, recycling every two, and black bin(general waste) every three.

I dread that coming into force where I live. As it is people dump rubbish out on the street because with general waste only being collected every two weeks and a very low uptake on recycling it is already like living in a tip. Very few people remove their bins from the (narrow) pavement after collection so it is cluttered and looks awful. More bins and an even more complicated collection schedule is not going to help. As for the CF neighbour, politely tell her it is not acceptable, your bins are for your family. My CF neighbours broke into my back yard and took my general waste bin, filled it with their crap and put it out for cillection! I had words with them, they tried to deny it!

Mycatmax · Today 09:18

Put them on her doorstep

Ibrox · Today 09:23

Either dump them at their door and get a bin lock, or suck it up this time, get the bin lock and smirk when they try the same shite next time.

I have to agree. If your general waste is regularly that over-filled, then you’re not recycling. Our recycling fills up multiple times faster than the general waste/non recyclable bin.

Ibrox · Today 09:29

I'm lucky because we never use our bins at all. I take all our bags to my work and chuck them in the general waste skip in our works yard.

We also get everything collected weekly but our council doesn’t provide any bins ! They give us recycling bags and garden waste costs £77 a year. Some people buy their own outside bins to keep the rubbish in for a week.

Ihateslugs · Today 09:44

Bitzee · Yesterday 21:30

3 weekly bin collections?? 🤢 And you’re limited to only to only 1 bin!! Glad I don’t live where you do, that’s awful. But if your mate is absolutely certain and absolutely reliable then take them back to neighbours, put them on their doorstep and then get a lock or keep your bins somewhere where they can’t access them in future e.g. behind a locked gate.

Edited

I think my council are planning to introduce this when the new government regulations on recycling comes into place! It will be a nightmare unless they also provide larger bins similar to our garden waste ones. I can just about fit three bin bags in each bin and I usually have three in it for the fortnightly collection.

It ‘s going to increase fly tipping I suspect, much to the surprise of a neighbouring council, this happened after they closed their local tip so people had to drive to one 15 miles away!

DeeNiall · Today 09:44

Where was the bin when the neighbours but the black bags in?
If it was in the street, then they're just a bit cheeky. If the bin was on your property, remove the bin bags and return them.

REP22 · Today 09:48

Being elderly is not a "get out of being polite" free card. My neighbour is elderly but if ever she has the need, she sends a quick email during the day to say "I've got some extra rubbish, is it OK if I put a few bits in your bin?" It's never a problem and she always asks. We also go halves on the annual garden waste bin.
