CF neighbour AIBU

AIBU?
Our general waste bin is collected every three weeks, and recycling every two weeks. It’s a relatively new system, and as a family of four, our black bin is always full by collection day.
Our black bin was collected last Tuesday, so we still have another two weeks to go before it’s emptied again.
Anyway, back to the AIBU bit. My CF neighbour put two black bin bags in our bin (one small and one large). Her bin is already full, so I think she’s having a clear-out.
I didn’t actually see her do it, but my neighbour from across the road, who I’m friends with, did.
I’m not sure whether I should say anything, but it’s really annoyed me. Am I being petty?
They’re elderly, so maybe she doesn’t want to go to the tip, but it also means we’ll probably have to make a trip to the tip ourselves now.

What about used tissues? We all suffer with allergies so we go through a lot.

Hankies? Kinder to the skin on your nose too.

Aside from the fact the bin collections being every three weeks is an absolute joke, you should absolutely say something to your neighbour.

Ours are collected every two weeks and gets full. We sometimes use our neighbours bin, but only on the day of or day before collection, AFTER asking them if it’s ok and checking they don’t have any last minute bags to add.

This is a good idea. We do have a Ring camera outside. It doesn’t show the bin, but they don’t need to know that. I don’t want to say it was my friend who saw them.
The elderly couple have lived around here for so long, and everyone loves them.
I think I’ll say, “If you keep the bags in your garden, we’ll take them with us the next time we do a tip run.”

I really wouldn’t offer to take their black bags to the tip. You’re setting yourself up for more CF behaviour. As they say ‘no good deed goes unpunished’. Put their bags on their doorstep.

GasPanic · Today 11:52

The reason they only empty black bins once every 3 weeks is because a) they are trying to encourage recycling and b) it costs them money to put stuff into landfill, and probably most of the black bin stuff goes straight to landfill without sorting (I can't imagine any reasonable way of sorting the nasty stuff in there).

They are CFs and know exactly what they are doing. It's not very neighbourly to pinch someone elses limited space. They should have at the very least asked.

@anothernewname6789998212 , what is it you are binning? The general waste for a fortnight from this house (2 adults) wouldn't fill a carrier bag.

what does your council accept for recycling?

DeeNiall · Today 12:12

Clean glass, clean soft plastics, clean empty tins and cans, cardboard, magazines and newspapers, paper, clean used plastics like empty water bottles, empty shampoo bottles, milk containers and yoghurt pots. Not sure if there's anything else that can go in it.

Is it??? We get everything taken weekly and no limits for how much you can put out except you can only do bulky stuff like a sofa 3 times a year. 3 weeks of rubbish in this heat is utterly disgusting. And must be really hard to manage the quantities hence this nonsense with the CF neighbour trying to use OP’s bins.

Why would it be disgusting? There's no food waste, because that all goes in the food bins, so it would only be things that can't be recycled in the general waste, like certain plastics. I'm not sure what would be disgusting about having that sitting around for a few weeks, or why the heat would have an impact.

the only plastic my council will take has to be bottle shaped!! no I have no idea why. so no food trays or containers at all. They don't accept soft plastic. paper or cardboard packaging must be completely clean, no food contamination and of course paper and card can't be washed so that has to be binned.

Biker47 · Today 12:27

Straight back into their garden.

It will be the processing equipment in their recycling plant.

I guess....my point is that we are not all operating within the same recycling parameters and those who struggle to deal with their waste within their system may be niether stupid nor thoughtless.

Someone dumped 2 black bin bags on the path behind the houses. It was bin day and my neighbour could have simply put them in his bin for collection, Or he could have called the council to remove them. He decided to be lazy and dumped them on my garden. Unfortunately he was caught on my cctv. I printed out the thumbnails on an A4 and put it through his door. On the back was a stark message that the film would be sent to the police if the rubbish was not removed within 24 hours. He was out there at 6.15 am clearing it up. I enjoyed that.

Tablesandchairs23 · Today 12:44

I'd give her the bags. Where do you keep your bins so she was able to access them.

MauveFatball · Today 12:50

We’re really lucky with our council bin collections
• brown bin, for garden and food waste - emptied weekly
• blue bin, for all recyclables - emptied fortnightly
• black bin, general waste - emptied fortnightly (the opposite week to the blue)
We don’t pay any extra for this

Every so often a neighbour will text me asking if there’s room in our black bin, if there is (and usually there is) then she’s welcome to put rubbish in it.

Our council do offer bulk collections and there is a charge but never used it.

Crispandco · Today 12:52

Soo… I went round on my lunch break. I knocked and told her my camera had picked her up putting stuff in our black bin. I said that, as it had only just been emptied, I’d take the bags out and give them back, otherwise we wouldn’t have enough room for the next couple of weeks.
She replied saying she thought the bin collection was tomorrow and that we had extra space, so she assumed we wouldn’t mind.
Now, she isn’t the type of person to get the date or the day wrong, so she’s either trying to pull my leg or maybe she’s getting a bit forgetful.
Anyway, the bags are now back in her garden. 😊
She did make a little dig, though, and said we need to cut our hedge. I replied, “It’s bird nesting season,” and then walked away. So I feel like I won that one… although I don’t think I’ll be getting a Christmas card this year. She didn’t look very happy!

@godmum56 , Even if my council was like yours, there would still be very little in the general waste bin.
So far, the general waste - we're a week and a half into the fortnight - has two plastic coated foil food trays, some poly food bags too manky to wash, two emptied food sachets, two metal things that had plastic on the ends (about 20 cm by 1 cm, ashtray contents after friends came round, a broken plasic peg and an empty flattened tetrapak in it. Oh, and an empty lik-e-lix tube that the cat pinched from the cupboard.
There will be an empty toothpaste tube and a used toothbrush to go in it, and used sanitary products. Used toothbrush will have been used as a cleaning tool after it was too old for teeth cleaning.

so will your recycling take things like yoghurt pots and the trays that fish, meat and some fruit and veg come in?

Or he could have just left them on the path!

Why would he compound someone’s twattery with further twattery. Well done for calling him out.

Well done OP! Given her hedge comment, it sounds like it was deliberate.

Regarding your toothbrush and toothpaste tube - if you sign up to the Boots Recycling Scheme they take those (and many more items unable to go in general recycling) and for every 5 items you deposit in store you get 500 advantage card points when you spend £10 on that day.
I’ve earned hundreds of pounds over the last 3 years.

I had a look at that and it seemed over-complicated but I might save them and have a go. I don't really need anything from Boots to spend £10 there. Could be useful at Christmas and I could buy something like food.

DIL uses it but she recycles things like empty ibuprofen packets and everything and they have baby.

@anothernewname6789998212 , what is it you are binning? The general waste for a fortnight from this house (2 adults) wouldn't fill a carrier bag.

There’s four adults in this house, of which one works from home all week and two work from home half the week - so definitely more waste being disposed of at home than the average household. Couple that with the council being quite restrictive with what goes into the recycling, and it can mount up quite quickly.
