CF neighbour AIBU

AIBU?
Our general waste bin is collected every three weeks, and recycling every two weeks. It’s a relatively new system, and as a family of four, our black bin is always full by collection day.
Our black bin was collected last Tuesday, so we still have another two weeks to go before it’s emptied again.
Anyway, back to the AIBU bit. My CF neighbour put two black bin bags in our bin (one small and one large). Her bin is already full, so I think she’s having a clear-out.
I didn’t actually see her do it, but my neighbour from across the road, who I’m friends with, did.
I’m not sure whether I should say anything, but it’s really annoyed me. Am I being petty?
They’re elderly, so maybe she doesn’t want to go to the tip, but it also means we’ll probably have to make a trip to the tip ourselves now.

We have food collected every week, then a each week it is a rotation for cardboard, plastic, black bin that repeats. I feel the pain of a 3 weekly black bin collection! We have two cats so having their poo in the bin for 3 weeks makes it really stinky in the summer 😬

Our food bin usually only has one bag in it each week, so I’d prefer if they made that fortnightly and increased the black bin collection!

On the actual point of your post OP 🤣 I’d say that you should definitely mention it, but I agree to be as friendly as possible. Just say that you noticed on the camera, you don’t have the spare bin space for it unfortunately, and that you would be happy to help them go to the tip if needed. I think just putting the rubbish at their door is a bit inflammatory at this stage (but I would do it if it continued!)

98% say you are not being unreasonable. What are you going to do?!

I’m going round at lunch time on my break 🫣

I have to agree. If your general waste is regularly that over-filled, then you’re not recycling. Our recycling fills up multiple times faster than the general waste/non recyclable bin.

Our recycling is also usually full when collected, but we have two cats and their waste has to go in the black bin. It’s not overfilled, but it is smelly! Same with their food pouches etc, it adds up to filling the bin and doesn’t smell nice

Viviennemary · Today 09:56

It's feeble but I'd take them back and say did you put those bin bags in our bin by mistake. I'll need to return them as we won't have room for our own stuff. No point in saying look you cf's quit putting stuff in our bin. You got caught.

hourspassed · Today 09:58

Good luck! I agree with pps, say you know they've done it and kill them with kindness - 'oh it's difficult isn't it - we really struggle with just one bin - I know it's terrible isn't it. If you keep them in your garden we can take them to the tip in a couple of weeks if that helps at all?'
And keep your fingers crossed they don't say - 'oh well if you're going to the tip then ....'

I have to confess that occasionally I put a bag in my neighbour’s bin, but only if it is about 11pm the night before bin day and her bin has plenty of space. She lives alone and I have a six year old and she seems to generate much less rubbish than us!

Oh no, please don't do this. As others have said, you can't assume that she isn't going to get up at 6am to add more stuff to her bin - I have neighbours who do exactly that. Sorry but this so so cheeky and entitled.

If I've put the bin in the street, then any space in it might as well be filled by someone else's binbags.

If it's days away from bin day and it's not in the street then it's trespass.

@Imseriouslyyouguys , I could take months to fill the general waste bin. I recycle or reuse almost everything.
I don't have a large household or a baby/toddler in nappies.
There is very little food waste and it gets composted, as do newspapers and the unprinted brown cardboard.

3 weekly bin collections?? 🤢 And you’re limited to only to only 1 bin!! Glad I don’t live where you do, that’s awful. But if your mate is absolutely certain and absolutely reliable then take them back to neighbours, put them on their doorstep and then get a lock or keep your bins somewhere where they can’t access them in future e.g. behind a locked gate.

Edited

If you recycle properly three weeks is perfectly sufficient. We’re a family of four including teenagers who are basically adults, our black bin is emptied every two weeks but it’s rarely more than half full on collection day.

All food waste goes in the brown bin which is collected weekly, all packaging is recycled including the soft plastics that can only be recycled at large supermarkets (keep a collection and take it every couple of weeks). I honestly don’t know how people are filling black bins every fortnight other than not bothering to recycle.

it depends what your council will accept. My sib visits me often and stays for weeks at a time. Its lovely. They have to do a brain reset over what goes where because our council will only accept 4 items for recycling (5 if you include some kinds of glass which is collected separately) Their council will accept anything that has the recycling symbol on it. Additionally their council will take batteries of all kinds, items with non removeable batteries and also small electricals for recycling.

Could it just be an absent-minded elderly person putting the rubbish in the wrong bin?

Our black bin rarely has more than 2 mid size bags in it. How do black bins get so full?

There is only me and my husband and we only put our general bin out every 3 months or so as the only thing I put in it things like polystyrene and thin plastic food covers which cannot be recycled.

What does everyone else put in their black bins? The only thing I can think of is nappies and sanitary towels which we don't have.

Round here, everything is black bin except clean paper and card, plastic bottles, aerosols, clean food and drink cans, and glass bottles and jars. Not fruit or veg containers, not ready cooked meal containers, not plastic meat and fish containers, not yoghurt/pudding pots.

I keep saying this, its because not all councils accept as much types of recycling as yours evidently does.

Being elderly doesn't mean they can't deal with a smelly bin for a couple of weeks.

Do NOT offer to go to the tip for them, even if you're going anyway.

Don't reward cheeky fucker behaviour.

What does your council not accept then? Glass? Cans? Cardboard?

What about used tissues? We all suffer with allergies so we go through a lot.

BirdLandedonmyHead · Today 10:27

We only have 4 bins, collected fortnightly. I feel lucky now..
(General, dry recycling, glass, garden (April-October, but free).
Although we can also leave out batteries ans small electricals separtely to thar, and the dry recyclibg is soon being split into paper/card and plastic/metal...

I feel sorry for those with small gardens!

Anyway OP... no, people shouldnt use someone elses bin just because theirs is full.

no rigid plastic is the biggie. no meat or fish packaging, very little fruit or veg packaging in both cases because its either absorbed food residue, is flexible plastic or, as I said, rigid plastic. Even if its marked recyclable our council won't take it.

As she was seen doing it take them out of yours, put them on her doorstep and get yourself a bin lock ASAP

Hang on, bin locks are a thing?

Jeez, what a time to be alive!

I usually tie a rope round mine so that it's too time consuming for someone to use it. I have so little general waste that I don't get too wound up if someone uses that bin.
The one that annoys me is half-eaten takeaways in my recycling bin.

No way would I offer to take CF’s bags to the tip, especially if they’d been left in the garden for weeks

Hardly likely. But the OP needs to talk to her about it

Both general and recycling weekly here. 3 weekly is barmy.

Three weeks is probably too long.
Here we are fortnightly. Recycling one week, general waste the next. Food waste every week.

What are you binning?
