AIBU after being reported for apparently targeting a member of staff

Vintageshirtsearch · Yesterday 21:25

OK no one is going to believe this to be true but I need to share it. I was spoken to today by my line manager as I've been reported in our 'call it out' policy. I made a member of staff feel targeted and picked on.
I bet you won't be able to guess what I did that made them feel so bad.
It's so crackers I actually thought my manager was joking.
Anyone want to guess?

Again... i didn't say I was upset. I'm fine. I'm just speaking on behalf of others. That is all.

You’re an adult, no?

But the queen died on a Thursday mmm.

National Mourning officially lasts for 10 days until the state funeral. They were meant to spend the weekend wailing and gnashing their teeth.

I can see why you never talk to strangers 😉🤣

Sadly yes, an old one, lol.

I don't believe I'm behaving like a child so here so I'm not sure why you're asking.

Fast800goingforit · Today 08:06

I think your Swiftie colleague needs to be told her use of the whistle blowing hotline was inappropriate. I mean wtf?

Dollymylove · Today 08:06

Now if this had been 1972 and Donny Osmond, blood would have been spilt 🤣🤣

HelenaWilson · Today 08:08

A quick search will find a lot of hate.

You are not obliged to read it.

And Taylor Swift is far from unique in that respect. Look at some of the stuff that's been posted about the Princess of Wales.

(I was at work the day after John Lennon was shot. People were shocked, but no-one was crying.)

I'm not sitting here having a melt down over Ts.

I was merely explaining why OPs colleague might have been upset. I didn't say I agreed with the colleague. Ugh I give up.

DontDareCallMeDarling · Today 08:12

G5000 · Today 06:15

I was once reported because I didn't say good morning to a colleague.

After investigation, the colleague had to admit that I was in the middle of a conversation with someone else and indeed probably didn't hear her.

Another colleague reported several of us because we were talking about dogs and her dog died. 15 years ago.

People like that exist.

Yes, our team had a good talking to because Jennifer and Claire were discussing Slimming World and recipes. Belinda in the corner who has an eating disorder that nobody was aware of was triggered.

You mean the woman complained 15 years after her dog died?

Wtf😂😂"took sides"

I agree; the whole point of conversation is to express and hear opinions that we may or
may not agree with. It’s how we learn to communicate and to debate. If anything that could be offensive were to be shut down how on earth does debate take place? Do we have to boo a slot in a debating chamber otherwise all opinions are off limits?
The world’s gone mad.

G5000 · Today 08:15

You mean the woman complained 15 years after her dog died?

yes. Her dog died 15 years ago and she believed nobody should ever mention dogs again, as it was triggering for her.

sorry book (although maybe boo works better)

Also Taylor Swift is not a 'girl' she's an adult woman. This infantilisation of women is possibly part of the issue and why her fans seem to be sensitive in a teenage fan club way

And now you have upset the real Teenage Fan Club fans (the fannies). You are putting your foot in it all over the place today OP.......😂

Edited

I hope she had therapy. How she's coping now I don't know as dogs are everywhere.

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice nope not quite… Perhaps I should read more crappy famous people stuff… absolutely admit that I’m out of touch. Will also admit I don’t care.

Op- your colleague is a twat. What a pathetic snowflake.

I agree, I think it's spite dressed up as being triggered.

Yes. I can get extreme reactions from children/young teens when you say something negative about their idol. But when it's grown up women who can't handle you don't like their idol I would question mental health/maturity/intellectuel abilities because that's just life; we don't like the same things/people. I don't eat meat- my dh and children love to eat meat. That's fine.

The problem might be that people relate to their idol as a friend- again you would expect grown up people to know better.

My niece loves Taylor Swift. I have given it a try to please her but I just find the music really boring and not appealing at all. I prefer any pop to that but I think for the fans it's not the music per se- it's the feeling of connection they feel they have with her. I admit that I have never felt "close" to an artist even though I appreciate their music.

anyolddinosaur · Today 08:21

I want to know who the other person was (just male or female) and if they were also the subject of a compalint. "the other staff member said he didn't get the hype over taylor swift and I said I didn't either."

I hope your manager told them if they are so sensitive they can just move away from any further discussions - and is now looking to manage the idiot out.

Whatyoutalkingabouteh · Today 08:22

Vintageshirtsearch · Yesterday 21:55

I cannot tell you how boring and totally normal the conversation was. It must have lasted less than 30 seconds and was probably the most time I've ever spent thinking about taylor swift.

I work in HR and these are the type of shit grievances people actually raise….

5128gap · Today 08:28

Rightsraptor · Today 07:52

How do the comments here about being careful what you say to colleagues fit with 'bring your whole self to work'?

Maybe OP's employer is sensible and doesn't subscribe to that stupid idea, but then I'd expect them to take a robust view on the Swiftie Whinger. If they do subscribe to it then OP's whole Swiftie-dismissive personality is every bit as valid at work as the Swiftie's.

It's all madness.

Excellent point. What if your whole self is an argumentative, confrontational, disagreeable arse? How'd they like them onions?

Ibrox · Today 08:30

Vintageshirtsearch · Yesterday 21:37

During a coffee break, another staff member said they thought Taylor Swifts wedding was over the top and a bit ridiculous. I said "yeah I agree" the complainer said it was to keep it private and I laughed and said "in madison square garden" the other staff member said he didn't get the hype over taylor swift and I said I didn't either. End of conversation.
Apparently this deeplynupset the complainer as they love taylor swift and they felt mocked.

If your HR has any sense, they'll dismiss this as the arrant nonsense it is.

Henhipster · Today 08:30

Owly11 · Yesterday 21:43

It sounds like you did take sides in the argument. If you are older perhaps they see you as having more power in the organisation. It's obviously ridiculous of them to report you but I can see how it might have felt to them that you were dismissive of one person's view and supportive of the other.

I don’t get this at all, isn’t this just human interaction, difference of opinion over a current topic? Crikey no wonder younger people are feeling anxious and lonely if your disagreement is seen as unreasonable. I am gobsmacked.

She will lose her shit when she sees this thread then 🤫🤣

I would love to see some of the younger generation in an office in the 90s. They'd pass out.🤣
