We’re going on holiday in 8 weeks’ time and, for reasons I won’t bore you with, have had to leave it quite late to book. We’ve now settled on an itinerary and I’ve found the most amazing accommodation in one of the Nordic destinations we’re visiting. It’s exactly what I need at the moment- an adults-only luxurious villa on a lake with private sauna, veranda, and lots of opportunities to relax. It’s part of a resort so loads of facilities and activities. Food looks great.

I was all set to book and did another trawl through TripAdvisor and came across this picture from a 3-year old review Shock

Now, I’m not the biggest fan of mice indoors but I’m not afraid of them and, realistically speaking, lots of hotels probably have mice but we don’t see them, but a mouse in a hallway or behind the bins is different to one on an actual bed. The review is from 3 years ago and all of the review since rate hygiene highly and there’s no mention of anything else like this.

I’m now thinking of not booking. However, I can’t see any other accommodation options that tick as many boxes for us.

DH is of the view that, while it’s not something we’d like to encounter, a mouse going indoors in a forest setting isn’t out of the ordinary and it seems to be isolated to one review from three years ago.

I don't want to scare you or anything, but there are mice everywhere, most of those who never saw a mouse around their property, still have mice living around them. The fact that there was a mouse in there years ago means absolutely nothing in today's context. If you never stepped foot in a building where a mouse was at one point, you'd have a hard time having a roof over your head. I would urge you to let it go, maybe ask for some assurance from the place, given how important this is for you..

Oh I know that. We had a couple of mice in our house one winter a few years ago and, as much as it wasn’t pleasant, nobody was shrieking and jumping onto chairs. They were promptly sent to the big cheese-wheel in the sky, the hole they got in through was filled, and we’ve not had any recurrence of it still.

I think I’m just of the view myself that it’s not a massive deal but wondering if I’m just being naive/too laid back.

He looks so cute 🤣 3 years ago and no repeat reviews I'd book

Maybe the mouse is a chargeable extra and is provided as a pet while you're there.

I do love a pet-friendly hotel!

Or maybe he was on a one-mouse mission to reboot the movie The Witches?

I would expect that if I left a load of snacks all over my bed in a house in the middle of a forest, those snacks might attract wildlife to my bed. Particularly if any windows or doors were open.

ElviraZoffany · 03/07/2026 15:00

Adorable! 🐭

CurlewKate · 03/07/2026 15:00

Think of him as an emotional support mouse.

It's a mouse. Mice have large eyes and ears relative to their heads. Rat eyes are small and beady, with small ears.

If it's a forrest setting then there's bound to be lots of mice around outside. This one may have been tempted inside by all the food these people had about. I wouldn't let one review from 3yrs ago stop me, if there's been no such reviews since. Did the owner not to a response to the review?

No, but they don’t seem to respond to any TripAdvisor reviews, even the glowing ones. Is TripAdvisor used as much in other countries as it is in USA/UK etc? I definitely find the number of reviews for certain countries tend to be a lot lower, even for very popular places. Wonder if it’s an app used more in English-speaking countries?

I can’t blame the reviewers for being pissed off. They went to reception to complain, brought photos of the mouse and droppings, and were asked if they wanted some new sheets Grin

Right, I’m going to book. If a herd of mice move into the bedroom, I’ll happily spend my stay in this bath.

Thanks all.

Wondering where this mouse is now, and how it is getting on in life?

🤣🤣 Did he book the room? Was he smuggled in? We shall never know

Dixie81 · 03/07/2026 15:19

One random mouse wouldn’t put me off but the staff’s response (or lack of) might. I’d expect more than simply being offered clean sheets. The staff should have offered to clean the room and strip the bed themselves, maybe throwing in a free dinner or some other recompense on top.

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/07/2026 15:20

That is definitely a mouse - where you only have a head shot, the house mouse and the domestic rat are pretty similar but the mouse will have a comparatively MUCH larger eye, more of the space on its face is 'eye' vs the rat.

Anyway - where there are people, there is food, if there is also shelter, there will be mice. It was raised and a long time back, no further comments on evidence of mice, I'd stay there.

Spot on!

Loads of lovely lakeside options but we’re limited because of not being able to book earlier.

It’s beautiful.
And so is the accommodation!

Littlejellyuk · 03/07/2026 15:25

Maybe take a ballgown and sing to the mouse, and then he and his mousey mates can signal to their bird friends and some squirrels and you can all get together and reenact a scene from Cinderella? 😆 🐁 💃

Or maybe he really fancied the bag of crisps or granola on the bed? And next time he appears, tell him its his turn to provide the snacks? 🤔

Or maybe it was a relative of Stuart Little and he fancied a holiday away from the rat race? 😆 🐀 🏁

I will see myself out 👋

Mr Mouse might have chosen somewhere else to go this year after he was named and shamed 3 years ago 😂

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/07/2026 15:30

Never stay in Arizona, OP; we had scorpions, cockroaches, tarantulas and snakes, the first three of them in the house Grin

Oh and my ex got bitten in bed by one of the scorpions ...

HoppingPavlova · 03/07/2026 15:30

Nope. Would rather die.

ItsNotMeEither · 03/07/2026 15:31

They've got bags of food in the bed and then along came a mouse. I'm guessing they didn't sit there while a mouse climbed into bed with them. My guess is they left the food on the bed and went out, along came a mouse who hit the jackpot and he was still tucking in when they got back.

Don't leave food in your bed and based on the other reviews, you'll be fine. Take your food and wine to the balcony, enjoy the view and drop your crumbs outside.

rwalker · 03/07/2026 15:31

3 years ago that mouse will of retired by now you’ll be safe

The reviewer did quite the photoshoot with this little dude Grin

I’m definitely saying mouse. Rats have bigger bodies and smaller ears.

As it happens, their review is negative about their whole experience, and not just the rat. Seems they had a broken toilet, beeping hot tub, and a dietary requirement mix-up. None of the other reviews mention any of these issues at all so I’m guessing this couple were just really unlucky on a few fronts.

Edited

Or they brought the mouse in the hope he could negotiate a freebie for them.

I think if there were infestations, other reviewers woud have spotted them
