We’re going on holiday in 8 weeks’ time and, for reasons I won’t bore you with, have had to leave it quite late to book. We’ve now settled on an itinerary and I’ve found the most amazing accommodation in one of the Nordic destinations we’re visiting. It’s exactly what I need at the moment- an adults-only luxurious villa on a lake with private sauna, veranda, and lots of opportunities to relax. It’s part of a resort so loads of facilities and activities. Food looks great.

I was all set to book and did another trawl through TripAdvisor and came across this picture from a 3-year old review Shock

Now, I’m not the biggest fan of mice indoors but I’m not afraid of them and, realistically speaking, lots of hotels probably have mice but we don’t see them, but a mouse in a hallway or behind the bins is different to one on an actual bed. The review is from 3 years ago and all of the review since rate hygiene highly and there’s no mention of anything else like this.

I’m now thinking of not booking. However, I can’t see any other accommodation options that tick as many boxes for us.

DH is of the view that, while it’s not something we’d like to encounter, a mouse going indoors in a forest setting isn’t out of the ordinary and it seems to be isolated to one review from three years ago.

Comparing the size of the 'mouse' to the bottle...

Mischance · 03/07/2026 14:37

😂

Espresso1 · 03/07/2026 14:38

Wondering where this mouse is now, and how it is getting on in life?

Pinkipa · 03/07/2026 14:38

3 years ago a mouse was spotted? And you’re thinking of cancelling? I need a moment to digest this!

That bag looks like animal food pellet packaging?

DearlyDiego · 03/07/2026 14:39

If the review was from 3 days ago, or maybe 3 weeks ago, I'd skip. 3 years ago though...I'd give it very little thought. Assuming there are not repeat reviews of the same thing in the interim.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/07/2026 14:40

As long as he's not called Mr Jangles you'll be fine.

That you’re being a little peculiar?

Lookingdownthebarrell · 03/07/2026 14:40

The way you describe the location and hotel, i would expect all sorts of little things to be about. It’s not the hotels fault that this little guy was daring enough to get into bed rather than rummage by their bins. Also 3 years ago. I would book it, the place sounds like a dream!

I’d be fine if a mouse was spotted but he seems to have been fairly well established. Plus there was mouse poo everywhere.

A mouse doesn’t bother me all that much, but the idea of sleeping in a bed of mouse poo and then questions about the general hygiene of the place would niggle.

I suppose my initially reaction is “it was one mouse three years ago, it doesn’t seem to be a big problem” but I’m wondering if I’m being weirdly laidback compared to how others would feel?

It’s a single review from 3 years ago. If there were lots of mentions of mice - or rats - in reviews then yes it would be reasonable to not book. But not in this instance.

I guess you could always contact the place directly and ask but I honestly think you’re worrying over nothing

The mouse is much nearer. And that’s a crisp bag so perhaps not so big.

But on the bed!

Glitchymn1 · 03/07/2026 14:42

That’s a rat 😳by a large packet of of crisps😋

I wonder if he visited the spa and what he made of the hot tubs?

It looks cute.

shellyleppard · 03/07/2026 14:44

At least the mouse was alive... imagine finding a dead one 🤢🤢

Veronyk · 03/07/2026 14:45

They had mice once years ago.
They got rid of them.
Not a problem.

OriginalSkang · 03/07/2026 14:47

Maybe its a siberian hamster..

I would probably contact them and say I'd noticed it in the reviews and was it sorted now

DozyCrow · 03/07/2026 14:48

It's a mouse. Mice have large eyes and ears relative to their heads. Rat eyes are small and beady, with small ears.

If it's a forrest setting then there's bound to be lots of mice around outside. This one may have been tempted inside by all the food these people had about. I wouldn't let one review from 3yrs ago stop me, if there's been no such reviews since. Did the owner not to a response to the review?

exhaustDAD · 03/07/2026 14:50

I don't want to scare you or anything, but there are mice everywhere, most of those who never saw a mouse around their property, still have mice living around them. The fact that there was a mouse in there years ago means absolutely nothing in today's context. If you never stepped foot in a building where a mouse was at one point, you'd have a hard time having a roof over your head. I would urge you to let it go, maybe ask for some assurance from the place, given how important this is for you..

MouseInTheLakesideHouse · 03/07/2026 14:51

I think the bag is some kind of muesli or granola- ingredients I can make out are dried yogurt, wheat flour, and rapeseed oil.

Merula · 03/07/2026 14:51

It's a mouse - a wood/field mouse, as you can see the white chin. Probably was a one-off visitor.

MouseInTheLakesideHouse · 03/07/2026 14:53

The reviewer did quite the photoshoot with this little dude Grin

I’m definitely saying mouse. Rats have bigger bodies and smaller ears.

As it happens, their review is negative about their whole experience, and not just the rat. Seems they had a broken toilet, beeping hot tub, and a dietary requirement mix-up. None of the other reviews mention any of these issues at all so I’m guessing this couple were just really unlucky on a few fronts.

Maybe the mouse is a chargeable extra and is provided as a pet while you're there.
