Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

No, it’s not. You’re just miserable.

Yes it is, nah nah nah.

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

Edited

and then, once these ridiculous headteachers have punished half the students for missing a day to watch the final, a quarter for wearing the wrong color socks, and the remainder for looking out the window during class, they’ll be here trying to figure out why parents won’t “support the school.”

EnidVance · 03/07/2026 07:24

We’ll probably be knocked out by Mexico anyway so for the people who enjoy it they might as well celebrate, if you don’t then don’t watch!

We will get knocked out, Mexico have only lost twice (I think) playing at the Azteca!

My DC want to stay up and watch it.

downloadtoad · 03/07/2026 07:26

My kids will be going to bed as normal, and myself and dh will ‘try’ to stay up and watch it ! Ds 11 don’t really care for football anyway but if he gets so much as a sniff of a day off school due to it he’ll be in full negotiation mode 😆

And our local councillor! ‘Let the kids stay up! Be lenient schools! ‘ it’s a bloody game, the media seems to think that the whole country is football mad - and it’s still a minority that watch it…

I know what you mean. None of the main men-with the exception of one uncle- in my life are 'footie' fans.

I think in a way this fetishisation of it got worse in the nineties.
As did the 1966 nostalgia nonsense.

That fecking awful Three Lions song. The New Order one of a few years previously was actually a decent tune.
The middle class adoption of the game.
Everybody having a fecking team.

Any male celebrity who's asked which team he supports instantly goes up in my estimation if he says it's not his game.

Wonder how David Baddiel- a famous insomniac - will manage this 1am start time?
It's karma for Three Lions, Dave. 😁

It's a shame as the game itself is good. It's everything that goes with it that's bad.

Cue an increase in drunk / drug driving, accidents, fights and domestic violence. I fundamentally don't agree the pubs should stay open. The emergency services are going to be very busy.

I agree, and I think it's absolutely ridiculous. The link between football and DV is well established.

I feel very sorry for anyone who lives near a pub that's showing the match, too.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 03/07/2026 07:40

When my son was 4 his dad took him to watch a rocket launch at 2am in Florida. Then he was at Disney World by 8am (we had a 1 day free ticket), and we stayed till midnight. He is now 23 and this remains "The best day of his life"

MyBrightPeer · 03/07/2026 07:45

When did everyone in this country become so boring? It’s one game. The government have done the bit they have to do and sai they expect children in school, the England manager is doing his bit and telling people to get behind the team. I have a great memory of 2002 going to school at 7am to watch an England game in the sports hall.

I'm prepared and will accept being corrected on this but isn't dv worse if they win?
I know it sounds sort of counter intuitive.

Pennyfan · 03/07/2026 07:46

Do you always do what the England Football Manager tells you to? FGS, lighten up! It was a light hearted comment about enjoying seeing the support from children. Not an instruction manual on how to raise your kids.

An irrelevant stat because they largely play teams worse than them! Fuck me im glad im not as miserable as you lot are. It just be exhausting

Sartre · 03/07/2026 07:50

I won’t be staying up, nor my DC. As you say, totally different if this was the final but it’s not even the quarters.

IAmNotAPickyBit · 03/07/2026 07:55

DC don't care for football so will miss the game but if they wanted to watch it, I don't see why not. Life isn't supposed to be an regimented existence where we forego everything for the correct amount of sleep for work/school. If anything, the kids who stay up (and attend school the next day) will appreciate why a 1am football game is best experienced as a 'one off', because there are consequences for the next day.

Do you lot never break up for summer? Here in Ireland we’ve already been off a week! Don’t worry we’ll stay up late and cheer on Mexico, sorry England for you!

You sound pathetic

It's really not exhausting. It's fun! They're going home, they're going home, they're going, the pre-Madonnas are going home!

pubs open until 5am on a Sunday night, Monday morning is wild.

England manager telling kids to watch the match is good fun, it's the end of term, summer hols, one late fun night staying up will create a memory

This. The last 2 weeks of term it's all sports days and shows anyway. I'd undertand the angst if it was mid gcses.

A fleeting bit of feel good in the country and some want to piss all over it!

ClovisWrites · 03/07/2026 07:57

I’ve decided that we’ll record it and get up early (5.30) to watch it before school.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 03/07/2026 07:58

Me and my friends have had this discussion and there is not right or wrong. My DS is in year 8 he isn't staying up to watch it and will just watch the highlights or the recording in the morning before school. His school isn't winding down and is still full on with work and tests. He does not cope well with late nights as he doesn't seem to have the ability to sleep in and it would spoil the full week for him. One of his friends is used to staying up until gone 11 on a school night and his parents are going to let him stay up and deal with the consequences. As a family we are all football fans and I do have Monday off, for different reasons but I don't want to be tired all day.
I do agree we will probably get knocked out, Mexico mare a strong team and we are at a huge disadvantage with the altitude, but I do hope I am wrong.

Gloriia · 03/07/2026 08:03

'I do agree we will probably get knocked out, Mexico mare a strong team and we are at a huge disadvantage with the altitude'

Yep, i don't think anyone is expecting they'll be in the last few games. Losing when altitude is an issue, to a team in their home stadium will hardly be the humiliation other countries have experienced though.

And how many naps did he have? My kids at 4 had 2 naps while at Disney and that's after a full night's sleep. They still described it as the best day ever. My kids thrive on fun and adventure, but do need sleep. It's possible to do both
