Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

Exactly! Do what works for you and your family.

Me and my friend are both off on Monday so we’re considering going to the pub - it’ll be a laugh.

DH is thinking of setting beds up in the living room for him and DS (11) and if they stay awake they’ll watch it.

It's really not exhausting. It's fun! They're going home, they're going home, they're going, the pre-Madonnas are going home!

Hope they consider the same hype for the rugby World Cup next year, but I doubt it.

I think the cricket World Cup is next year, too, but there won't be any fuss about that, either.

I agree, and I think it's absolutely ridiculous. The link between football and DV is well established.

I feel very sorry for anyone who lives near a pub that's showing the match, too.

The issue is alcohol and abusive men.
DV also increases at Christmas, on bank holidays, and during heat waves. Men are the problem not football.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 03/07/2026 08:16

Better adults are at the pub rather than screaming and shouting in the middle of the night at home waking others up.

They're going home, they're going home they're going, Englands going home!

No need to get grumpy it's only millionaires kicking a ball around.

The English are so arrogant they haven't bothered to prepare for playing at altitude!

QuintadosMalvados · 03/07/2026 07:46

I'm prepared and will accept being corrected on this but isn't dv worse if they win?
I know it sounds sort of counter intuitive.

I can't remember, which is why I didn't address the point!

I disagree. People get more violent when they are drunk. That is a known fact.

You know people can drink at home right?

I think it’s great pubs can open. They need the business so I hope they’re busy!

It’s complete madness. But then I don’t even want to stay up at watch the 10pm matches let alone a 1am one. We are playing terribly and won’t win.

I'm not a big sports fan but whatever is currently on is all over the telly every single day with huge commentary and build ups to finals etc.
Cricket never seems to stop being on.

Children need to learn the futility of hope, and staying up late to watch that shower of shite getting battered by Mexico is a perfect lesson for them.

Lol, that's a great way of looking at it - training for all the disappointments of life!

Dusktilldawn99 · 03/07/2026 08:27

I'm not sure Tuchel has jurisdiction over our kids. Just do what you think is best. Its a bit of fun....

Yes it's helps build resilience, so lacking in many today! Enjoy the hope while it lasts, deal with disappointment in a good way. Unlike some devolved nations who spew out bile and vitriol constantly.

Gloriia · 03/07/2026 08:29

Bet loads of kids have skived off early for holidays anyway.

Imanautumn · 03/07/2026 08:32

Floppyearedlab · 02/07/2026 21:54

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

Omg that’s horrible and so controlling. Parents should decide if their kids can afford a morning off school.

But when you combine the two the figures will go up even more.

Tbf I think the pinning open is something of a red herring as plenty of dickheads will get pissed at home anyway, but at least that will prevent innocent bystanders getting caught up in the crap.

My daughter was hit in the face by a glass in a pub due to a couple of pricks arguing about an England/Scotland match during the Euros...

While I’m not a fan of football at all this is just so unnecessary. Lots of people talking about how excited their kids are about the game and there you are revelling in the prospect of them all being disappointed. Honestly have to say it is a rather pathetic look.

I know most people would like their own team or one they feel some level of affinity for to win but I will never understand the joy in someone else losing. It doesn’t seem like a recipe for a content existence whether it’s about sports results or anything else

Cue an increase in drunk / drug driving, accidents, fights and domestic violence. I fundamentally don't agree the pubs should stay open. The emergency services are going to be very busy.

In Mexico City there werefour killings in the crowds after Mexico won, even if I had a ticket there's no way I would be going to MC for a match that Mexico may lose, there is a phenomenal amount of violence in that country without football, I would think that pubs in residential areas would be closed, it's not the only place to watch.

But by blaming football we’re not addressing the actual issue. Football isn’t abusing women, abusive men are.

I’m sorry to hear what happened to your daughter. I’ve worked in pubs during major sporting tournaments and I know what’s it’s like. It’s not the sports fault though. The blame lies solely with the men who are violent.
