Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

The solution is just to not go.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but my absence won’t change the situation.

In any case, it’s not a case of just “not going.”When these events happen our local pubs spew out drunk men who cause chaos on their way home. Their sense of entitlement means they are a danger to everyone.

If you’re not up, it won’t affect you surely? Get some earplugs and an eye mask and sleep through. I’ve never known a bunch of people be so uptight about something that’s just a bit of fun

I don't like football. But I think this is a harmless bit of national excitement to break up routine, let adults and children have fun, do something different and feel part of something. Which we all need now and again.

Don’t you have any compassion for the people it will effect? The women and children who will get battered whether England win or lose? The absolute mess these people will make in the street?

NO, of course not, THE LOUDEST MUST HAVE THEIR FUN.

Also, it’s really nice to see the scenes of genuine jubilation and joy.

Well done to those schools taking a sensible approach - registration from 8 to 10am. Schools showing the highlights at 9am. There are ways to do it without being a complete misery about it - coming from someone who has no real interest in football. Why can't we all just have a bit of fun.

YorksMa · 02/07/2026 22:37

They can say that all they like, but doctors won't give a note for one day.

And that is exactly the point. No doctor's note means children can't be taken out of school with a fake illness because they were up watching the football. Though it does make it hard for parents with actually ill children.

QuintadosMalvados · 03/07/2026 07:12

I'm not in England. One of the countries of the UK, though.

I doubt there'll be any pubs opening to 5am here.
Though the landlady of my local is English, I think she'll have the sense to see that there won't be the trade.
Especially now that the university term time is over and the main cohort of English people to the area has gone home.

I'm pissed off about this start time.
My dh hates football. Wendyball he calls it.
I like the game itself but hate the Premier League.
I enjoy the tournaments and missing out is annoying as I simply cannot mess my sleep up for this.

Blimey this has really fried your ass hasn’t it?
I suggest you seek therapy for your anger and stress levels.

gingangirly · 03/07/2026 07:14

And our local councillor! ‘Let the kids stay up! Be lenient schools! ‘ it’s a bloody game, the media seems to think that the whole country is football mad - and it’s still a minority that watch it…

Rainbows246 · 03/07/2026 07:14

Considering how many unwell children we are still seeing in the ED i work in, this is ridiculous. Lots of viruses and stomach bugs, chicken pox etc are still circulating.

Mondays are already busy for us with weekend injuries and people who ‘can’t’ get gp appointments. Nevermind people rocking up just to get some paper evidence for school 🙄.

Feel sorrry for teachers already navigating end of year chaos and behaviours. Nevermind some children who have had much less sleep than normal and then being taken to go to school.

ovals · 03/07/2026 07:14

Stop trying to have fun everybody! Paint a scowl on your face and wish misery on everyone instead.

Oh here we go. The usual performative “women and children” line when the vast majority of football fans are peaceful. All I have to say is get a grip.

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

Edited

This is ridiculous. People might genuinely be ill and unable to get a doctor note and it’s also unfair to put pressure on doctors to facilitate this. Have some common sense please and don’t just assume everyone has bad intentions.

No I think the other poster is right.

The domestic violence isn’t happening because the pubs are staying open later. It’s going to happen either way. So using that as a reason for them to close just makes you look performative.

You don’t need to go. But if people want to go and have fun they are well within their rights to.

It’s a known fact, there’s nothing performative about it 🥴. Shame on you, tbh.

It’s performative because you know it’ll happen anyway so you’re using it to try and justify your stance, which is that you seemingly don’t want people to have fun.

I disagree. People get more violent when they are drunk. That is a known fact.

Bridget Phillipson has said its for parents to decide if their children watch the match and how to manage that but that they ARE expected to attend school the next day.
Seems reasonable.

That's going to be a fun day in the school medical room then 🙄

Errr… ok…. It justifies my stance, which is totally valid btw, because it’s true. 🤣

Half of the kids will be sound asleep long before 1am. The rest wont be arsed. Different if it was the final
