Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

Bloody hell are they going to school in the 1920s?

Queenie678 · 03/07/2026 06:36

If younger children who would struggle with an early wake up are just watching at home, why can’t they just have a slightly early night then wake up to watch it on repeat at 5/6am. Take their phones off them and there’s no way they’ll see the score.
I don't get why it would have to be live if you’re just at home as you create your own atmosphere, I get the need for live in a public place (pub/viewing area), but do younger children who may struggle with the early wake up time even go to those??
My kids are under 2 so have no awareness of the World Cup yet, but I’d probably just put it on later for them if they wanted to watch it / pretend that was the time it was on live.

Do you lot never break up for summer? Here in Ireland we’ve already been off a week! Don’t worry we’ll stay up late and cheer on Mexico, sorry England for you!

Why bother commenting? This thread isn't for you obviously.

Ah so sorry, thank you for clarifying 🌺

I don't think Tuchel was being that serious. I suppose in Germany they are more laid back.

Fucksake, live and let live (and i detest football).

They're going to be wiped out. Playing Mexico at altitude.

We are the underdogs yes. Are you an ABE or a proper football England fan?

I think they mean we won’t believe you if you call them in “sick” on Monday, not that GPs will fake it for them!

I don't think the GPs will be providing sick notes for a one day absence even if it is genuine...

DontBuyAnotherBook · 03/07/2026 06:47

I doubt I can stay up to be honest. May as well just wait for the likely result in the morning.

There's so much sadness and shit in the world to care about.

Pubs open and children up late (parents choice not enforced) isn't something to worry about.

Let's have a little joy

There will be way more sadness and shit if the pubs stay open til 5am.

Except it won’t be joy will it. More likely to be yobby men screaming and shouting keeping everyone awake. Then smashing up the pub and going home and beating up the missus when they lose.

I would say GPs rarely give sick notes to school children anyway, most leave it to the parents and school to sort out and don’t get involved, especially when some jumped up member of the school staff decide a parent should provide one for the sake of missing a day due to a football game. GP services are stretched to the limit anyway without time wasting staff at schools demanding sick notes. People can’t get appointments for weeks in advance anyway so how is a school kid supposed to get a sicknote and a GP cannot write a sicknote without either seeing a patient or having some form of medical evidence in front of them such as proof of treatment from a hospital. School’s don’t think of that when making their ridiculous demands.

Sicknotes are a legal document, schools can’t just demand a GP writes a legal binding document just because they don’t believe a parent when they phone their kid in sick.

Yes, exactly.

If that were my child and the school didn't record the absence as authorised because a GP quite reasonably wouldn't provide a sick note for one day, I'd just keep them off on the day of the party too. This sort of behaviour from schools needs to be disincentivised.

RampantIvy · 03/07/2026 07:00

Where are these secondary schools where no work gets done during the last two weeks of summer term?

DD's school used to work until the penultimate day. They always started the new academic year at the end of June, and the work ramped up during those last few weeks.

neverbeenskiing · 03/07/2026 07:01

I hope any of our parents who choose to let their kids stay up until 3am don't send them into school to be honest. They'll be too tired to learn anything and our staff shouldn't have to deal with constant meltdowns, fallings out and defiance as a consequence of overtired children.

Nowhere. People always make stuff up about schools.

LlynTegid · 03/07/2026 07:02

I suppose for those children who watch it, helps them to learn about disappointment. Resilience among younger people is an issue, so it may help them to watch England's defeat on Monday, and also learn about altitude.

Lou7171 · 03/07/2026 07:06

I think MN could benefit from a bit of unclenching. It was a lighthearted comment, not a moral crisis.

Fuzzypinetree · 03/07/2026 07:06

Goodness...
What an overreaction. So you have tired children for one day...or (better option) they stay home one day to get some sleep. It's hardly a big deal.
I don't get why English schools are always so hellbent on creating issues for themselves.

Our secondary didn't do much work in the final 3 weeks. The fact that it was about 40 degrees was a major contributing factor. We also had sports day and trips and stuff like that going on as well, though.

Indeed. My DS has an exam on Monday morning! Y12.
