Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

And whisper it, he is German - bloody foreigners telling us English parents what to do

And not just any bloody foreigner - a German! Although could have been worse I suppose, could have been French.

We know. We also know altitude will be a problem which begs the question why fifa allow this unfair advantage surely there's thousands of stadiums to choose from. Why Mexico city?

Because FIFA always rigs the WC so the host nation can at least progress to the Semi Finals. I expect to see Mexico in SFs. Remember when South Korea got to the SFs and the foul means by which they did it?

YourAmplePlumPoster · Yesterday 12:25

I'm afraid this is where England goes out. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

OMG,
Letting your kids stay up to watch a match is not the end of the world, a few hours sleep after the match will not make them zombies for the rest of the day.
How many kids stay up gaming on their phones till the small hours?

Nowadays, we tend to wrap our kids in cotton wool.
If they are footie mad, and really are dead keen to support their national team, I would have thought that there would be a bigger fall out if you stopped them.
I bet they wouldn't sleep any way.

And as for that "Grinch" of a head teacher, denying the kids the end of term party if they did not turn up for school, (because lets face it, there will be always be at least one) suck it up you miserable old sod, it's not the end of the world.

I am not particularly a football fan, but for those who are (both adult and children) I hope you all enjoy the game, and that we get the result we are hoping for. Either way it will be an indelible memory for the kids.

Come on England. 🇬🇧

Yes, you can bet they didn't consult with the local GPs before coming out with that one.

I'm under the assumption the school don't expect people to get doctor's notes, they're just letting everyone know they'll be unauthorised absent really.

lilkitten · Yesterday 14:04

Staying up to watch is fine, but just go to school/work after. I was a massive film fan as a teenager, I stayed up to watch the Oscars every year (about 2am-6.30am) then just went to school.

I don't know any children that stay up late gaming.

Dr's are not going to give out notes for kids having one day off school. I dont agree that kids should be missing school because of the football, but that is ridiculous

You obviously don’t know many teenagers.
Or if you do, you are blind.

Eh?

Have you not looked at the players? Football, or rather sport, could end racism.

It says a lot about the quality of management at that school given the children that will be punished by such a rule are the ones that were genuinely sick and can’t get a doctors note, and the ones with
parents who care more about the football than their child getting to go on the school trip (which would have been me as a child - I’d have been kept up all night by my father and his friends, then they’d have refused to get up to take me to school).

How many children do you actually know?
There surely are thousands that you are not acquainted with.

Or as lovecotswoldsliving quite rightly says:
You obviously don’t know many teenagers.
Or if you do, you are blind.

The GPs will be fuming if a school said this.
The head of that school is likely to get a very rude letter, telling them that they have neither the time or inclination to write any such evidence.
Its bad enough trying to get a letter for a genuine pupil, who has medical needs, as evidence for exams.

Given my job, an awful lot. Many parents take more responsibility to ensure this isn't the case.

Neither, did you mean to be so offensive?

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

Edited

They'd probably rather watch the footy .. big deal on a school trip .

Supersleepysheepy · Yesterday 21:11

If you work with teenagers they obviously don’t tell you what they are up to,
And the richer they are, the easier it is to access games, gambling etc.

Sounds about right for the UK Cant find a chemist open past 5.30pm on a Saturday to get an ear infection sorted but i could go to the pub at 1am on Monday. Priorities eh

Crazy they can shut schools for a whole year (🦠) but act like missing ONE day in 2026 is a massive deal.

This is where I think they lost any credibility tbh

Zpacncmcnsna · Yesterday 21:56

People were learning online. A deadly virus isn't the same as a football game. Watch the match all you want, but go to school then next day. Same reason those who stay up late need to go to work.

Our school had full online learning within a week of schools closing.
And schools remained open for children of essential workers.

How many is an awful lot?

Even teachers don't know more then a few hundred let alone a few thousand.

Saying, "given my job" is a complete cop out.
What job is it that makes you so certain?

I will say "given MY job" many parents do not take responsibility.

Whoops! Another copout. 😀

Its one day at the end of term where the kids learn next to nothing. Primary school kids will be doing their sports days and end of year plays and whatever else comes with that. And my son in year 8 has some form all week along with sports day. So wont be doing any proper learning.
Plans in our house are he'll go to bed at 9 (he usually goes at 9.30) then I'll wake him at 1 and hopefully he'll go to bed for a few hours after the game.
Hopefully England will win but looks quite unlikely so it may be the last game of the world cup for them. Its not like its an everyday occurrence.
