Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

The dictator of New York has ZERO say in when a child goes to bed. That is for the parent to decide.

Actual intelligent adults understand this. And can also understand a joke.

I don’t remember football ever being this important . It seems crazy to me.

You’re either so young that this is your first World Cup or you’ve been living under a rock. This is tame compared to previous tournaments. I’ve not seen nearly as many houses, cars or pubs decorated as previous years.

I was working in a pub during the Japan/South Korea tournament and pubs were opening at 5am to show games. Extended opening hours are nothing new, it’s just that the most recent tournaments haven’t required them due to the time difference being more favourable

You are not remotely unreasonable. Making memories my foot. With any luck they will be out and this will all be over. After all, they haven’t won this thing in over half a century.

I hope you're not in any coaching or teaching position with that negative attitude.

Something has struck me about all of this and it's that England, as far as I remember, qualify for nearly every world cup. I'm in Ireland we have been in three world cups, last one was 2002, so none in my childrens lifetime and this is similar for many other nations so when you finally do qualify, after often gruelling stressful qualifying matches and then play offs people make the absolute most of it. They've no guarantee they'll ever see their nation in another one. Look at Italy not qualified since 2014. So all those saying what's the big deal it's on every 4 years that's a massively privileged position to be in and it might not be it might be 8, 12, 16.....No one ever knows for sure so celebrate and enjoy it while you're there.

Its all about the mindset. Negative people will put a dampner on anything and everything.

True. They’re exhausting.

If something doesn’t interest you then ignore it and do something else! Don’t go out of your way to try and ruin it for others.

Bridget Phillipson has said its for parents to decide if their children watch the match and how to manage that but that they ARE expected to attend school the next day.
Seems reasonable.

She could have been tougher and said all children need to be in bed at their proper times - but she is scared of her football mad voter base.

ovals · Yesterday 10:41

Maybe put them to bed with no dinner too. Make sure they know that misery is the way forward.

Feck me are all those kids at boarding school, you refer to? Give them the slipper or the cane if they don't do as they are told. Actually scrub that, sounds more like Fagin's hideout at bedtime.

Do you need her to tell you how to be a parent? Can you not make decisions for yourself?

Zpacncmcnsna · Yesterday 10:53

Should be the same as like with work. You watch the match..but you still need to come in to work the next day.

Whether or not staying up is good, the really bad part of the comment was "Write an excuse for school...". Way to go Thomas - teach parents and children to lie.

Talk about infantalising parents! I think they are the best judge of character for their children's needs. This is hilarious in believing every single school child watched that interview and will badgering their parents to stay up!

Haha it was clearly a jokey light hearted comment.
It’s quite worrying how seriously people are taking it.

Are you for real? Teach parents to lie?

Surely the big grin on his face told you it was a very light-hearted comment.

I think his biggest mistake was assuming the English still have a bloody sense of humour!!

anon199900 · Yesterday 11:11

Luckily my boys are not that bothered - my eldest is staying up but he has finished for summer.
The school is playing it at 9am Monday for them all and we are to keep the result a secret - I think it’s such a lovely idea but I am sure they will find out the result before then 😂

Absolutely correct. Tuchel was infantilising parents, telling them what to do,

Are you for real? Do you always take parenting instructions from the England manager?

Most people can see it for the joke that it was.

I’m astounded at the fact people are taking this seriously.
We’re doomed.
