Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

Are you actually being serious?
Do you usually consult the current England football manager for parenting advice?

I mean, he implied they were fun sponges if they didn’t. What parent wouldn’t crumble under that pressure?

Hope they consider the same hype for the rugby World Cup next year, but I doubt it.

I agree for following reasons
I’m Irish
Hate soccer
Love rugby
it was a bank holiday in Ireland when we get past the quarter finals 😂😂

I do not understand the football mentality. I never will. My ex husband and son have only one subject of communication. Funnily enough, I've just spoken to my son at great length, and football wasn't even mentioned.

It is totally beyond me.

ImGoneUnderground · Yesterday 00:57

Apparently they may be changing the timing due to expected storms in Mexico, and start the match at around 5pm Sunday - not sure whether this is actually happening or not, or why they can't do that anyway?
However, in view of the horrid things happening all over the world just now, why does one day of a late night before school / work, so near the end of term (when they don't usually do much anyway) really matter? (And yes, I have worked in a school). Go to bed very early on Friday, then on Saturday, watch the match, back to bed for 2-3 hours, get up & carry on. Spread just a little bit of happiness & pride in our country (& the little children will probably fall asleep anyway).
(People in any pubs at that time will likely just bog off home afterwards anyway - as far as I know, there haven't been any issues with the English fans either in the USA or in UK?).

Rhaenys · Yesterday 02:44

I have fond memories of missing lessons to watch the World Cup. I don’t get why people are so miserable about it given it’s the last few days of term.

Justwonderingifthisisnormal · Yesterday 02:53

But the thing is, you don't have to agree with it! You just have to put up with it. The poor children will have their education ruined...or rather, you're annoyed you have to parent for an extra few hours!

mumumental · Yesterday 03:31

I don’t remember football ever being this important . It seems crazy to me.

SpidersAreShitheads · Yesterday 04:19

After it being reported everywhere earlier that the time was likely to be moved earlier, it’s now apparently likely to be at the original time again!

It’s all a bit chaotic…

Exactly, the schools will be running down by now, doing a lot of the fun things they've not been able to schedule. The Mayor of New York told children that he had made a new law when there was a big sporting thing on, there would be no bedtimes.

The dictator of New York has ZERO say in when a child goes to bed. That is for the parent to decide.

Well I don't know where you have been but World Cup football has always been like this.

Ah, come on now 😂

You heard a journalist asking him what his message was to parents who have children who want to stay up, and you heard him respond - with a massive grin on his face - saying that children should watch it….and you thought that was a serious response??

It was a silly question, and Thomas Tuchel responded with an equally silly, frivolous response. I’ve attached a still of the press conference - it’s not a serious expression 😂😂

It is mind-boggling that some parents seem to have taken his comment seriously, and feel attacked because the England national coach hasn’t validated their parenting choices.

It’s as if no one is allowed to make jokes any more. Not everything has to be earnest. I’m sure Thomas Tuchel never expected people to be looking to him to uphold parenting standards.

It's like the 'one hour daily walk' from COVID all over again. Michael Gove suggested that was a reasonable daily amount of exercise when put on the spot by a journalist and people were taking it as if it was 'the law' and you had to do just that, no more, no less.

Now people are suggesting that people would take notice of this when deciding whether to let their DC watch the match? Ridiculous.

Also like COVID, we have the short notice 'will they, won't they' flip flopping uncertainties so there will be people who left the office yesterday evening, thinking they had a free pass to stay up all night watching the match and not work on Monday morning, then half the evening thinking that the match would be on Sunday evening but would they still get away with having Monday morning off and now it seems like it's back to Plan A. Of course, unless the storm does disrupt the match, like it did for at least one of the group stage matches.

IberianLynx · Yesterday 06:55

Thomas Tuchel didn’t really have a choice with that answer, if he had suggested that children should go to bed at a sensible time and miss the game, he would have been slatted a lot more. Personally, I’m not going to watch it or let my youngest who is still in primary school. It being a Monday will totally fuck up the whole week if you miss several hours of sleep.

makemineadecaf · Yesterday 07:01

It’s. A. Game. Who cares?!

LadyGAgain · Yesterday 07:05

We are recording it and getting up at 5am with the kids (phones off) to watch it all before school. This was everyone gets an uninterrupted nights sleep and it makes no difference to seeing it live.

The main thing is that it is rigged in favour of the host country like all World Cups. The England team won't have time to acclimatise to the altitude. The Mexican fans will disrupt the team with noise outside their hotel like they did with Ecuador.

Mexico have only lost twice in 89 matches in that stadium. That's not good odds for England.

Surely any rabble rousers will be moved along though obvs the local plods won't be bothered if the England team are disturbed you'd just think there'd be security to stop it happening?

Edited

We know. We also know altitude will be a problem which begs the question why fifa allow this unfair advantage surely there's thousands of stadiums to choose from. Why Mexico city?
