Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

If it’s not live then what’s the point? Either watch or don’t watch, but watching it hours after everyone else seems pointless

Anyone else thinking of the Likely Lads here?

Sure am Grin

What's wrong with watching it recorded anyway? Providing you avoid hearing the score it's surely the same match, presumably watched with the same people who also won't know what happened?

Mainly though, why is this in AIBU and not the section which was created for it?

So protestors are idiots too?

I didn’t say that. I said those who need a policing.
It is perfectly possible to protest without trouble. Just as it is to watch sport.

Yes. The protestors who behave like idiots are as bad as the football idiots. No where did I say ALL of them.
Perhaps you should read properly before jumping to your conclusions.

What has a pre planned and organised march have to do with the police criticising the late timing of this announcement?

Weird to shoehorn that into a football thread.

Except I didn't.

The post you agreed with did.

I meant to quote that post.

This is ludicrous. It’s not the final

primary school aged children can miss the match

stupid football

The Police work for US and this is their job FGS.
This thread epitomises why the wider UK ridicules MN and thinks it a cringeworthy middle class wittering nonsense site.

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 03/07/2026 17:57

Perhaps not this match , but definitely for the final if we got to it !
As a child ( years ago ! ) my dad would get us up at 2 am to watch Mohammed Ali fight !
As a one off it really does not matter !

pouletvous · 03/07/2026 17:58

I think recording it and watching at 6am/7am is a good idea

It could take about 3 hours if it goes to penalties, make sure you have enough time.

Bit less if you skip the hydration breaks and half time.

Police officers have lives. Their rotas will change at short notice. They probably had plans they will be expected to drop at short notice.
They may work for us, but they’re not at our beck and call. Rather an entitled attitude.

They are public servants who work for the Crown. The PM is authorised to make changes in unique events.

Bridget Phillipson has said its for parents to decide if their children watch the match and how to manage that but that they ARE expected to attend school the next day.
Seems reasonable.

Doesn't seem reasonable for the teachers that have to deal with the tired children....

I was disgusted hearing what the England manager said. He needs to butt out of parental decisions and also not be so dismissive of schools and how the kids will be after that late night.

This is so funny.

But not as funny as the Pre-Madonna comment.

Oh, sorry, but that’s ridiculous.
Who made you the fun police?

Of course kids should watch. Of course pubs should be open. Jeez, there’s enough misery in the world right now without creating more, unnecessarily.

Scarfitwere · 03/07/2026 18:23

Yanbu, it is ridiculous. They'd wake up and find out the score the next morning, staying up all night to watch it doesn't change anything.

whynotwhatknot · 03/07/2026 18:29

it is ridiculous nowhere near the final and id be very surprised if we won them you've got sad kids pissed up adults all going to miss work and school

I’m Scottish and I think fuck it - go for it. You guys have a good football team and if I were English I’d be very excited! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

My Scottish children managed to watch the 11pm matches, granted only 1 was on a school night. As a Pp said, they went to bed sharp, we got them up for 11 and they went back to bed after. The youngest played in a 5 hour football festival after the Morrocco game. 😂

Have you actually heard the press conference with your own ears or are you just basing your opinion on a few headlines?

Because I suspect the latter.

Thomas Tuchel was ASKED by a journalist to give a message to parents who had children who wanted to stay up.

His reply was light-hearted and tongue in cheek. Context matters.

I heard him talking and he was encouraging it and implying that parents who didn't allow it boring fun sponges.
