Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

pubs open until 5am on a Sunday night, Monday morning is wild.

England manager telling kids to watch the match is good fun, it's the end of term, summer hols, one late fun night staying up will create a memory

Exactly! Exciting! People need to lighten up

Tuchel was out of order and irresponsible. It’s a last 16 match not the final. There will be many many more opportunities to watch England’s mediocre performances at major tournaments and his comment that England needed children’s support was laughable. A match that doesn’t even start until 1am is not a bit of fun staying up a bit late, it’s a sleepless night and recipe for miserable grumpy children for a couple of days afterwards.

I dont mean this in a nasty way but you do you. We are a nation that are encouraging our youngsters to enjoy sports and athletics yet they cant watch the world cup? One of the biggest events that only happens every 4 years. Its very bad timing at 1 am and will i let my kids watch? not my 3 and 9 yo obviously, but my 16 year old. Thats my perogative if i chose to deal with tired, grumpy kids. I do it regularly through heatwaves. Schools could open a few hours later and parents could sleep manage their kids before and after. Its memory making. Ive seen more kids outside, being active, and playing football whilst the world cup is on than any other time. Surely it could be used as an incentive as we seem to be struggling to tackle obesity. Now, what exactly do the government want?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 03/07/2026 14:28

Maybe teachers want to watch it too. They could just open the schools for the afternoon - maybe later hours of starting and finishing.

Nousernameideaaga · 03/07/2026 14:29

If mine wants to watch I think we will send to bed as usual , then wake up at 5am (with no access to spoilers) then watch before school so she can go to school having watched it without being over exhausted.

Might not be the right decision for everyone, but that would be the right decision for us

I still don't understand why kids don't watch it at 6.30am before school rather than the middle of the night live.

This is the way

SummerDive · 03/07/2026 15:18

Redpaisley · 02/07/2026 22:14

But in Spain they do and it doesn’t harm the kids.

They also nap in the afternoon and have very different working hours.
Dont compare what isn’t comparable

Holier-than-thou attitude for saying parents should boundaries in place fir their dcs??

I’m getting very confused here. Isn’t that …. normal???

I can’t bear the air of superiority- always the same in these football-related threads.

As if everyone who wants to watch the match is some sort of wife-beating, flag-bearing thug.

I don’t doubt there are problems surrounding it, but when you’ve got what 15-20 million? football fans, there are bound to be some wrong-uns.

She's right though.

If she's like me she can picture all of the pursed, cat's anus mouths as they're writing their righteous posts

Mischance Saying that its just some guys kicking a ball around.misses the point ,it brings kids together and makes for some sort of unity.same as tennis or whatever as Nelson Mandela said "Sport has the power to change the world" esp football as it is something all classes of kids can do

canthavetoomanylights · 03/07/2026 16:22

I see the police are rather put out by this late decision. Can’t blame them really when they have rotas to fill.
The fact that the police expect to have to manage resources speaks volumes about what fans are expected to behave like.

A load of nonsense pearl clutching from football haters.

SheWillBeTheDeathOfMe · 03/07/2026 16:39

My work have announced an 11am start on Monday to allow everyone to enjoy the football. I was going to go to bed but feel contractually obliged to go to the pub with my son now.

I don't give a sht about football tbh, but I am a working class woman whos husband and son are OBSESSED. Flags, shirts (DH has every one since he was 4 all in a pile for guests 😂) beer, screaming, they love it. I love them loving it. When this bigoted "I am a middle class person and I despise those oiks" nonsense starts it makes me strongly dislike the people doing it and feel they hate my family.
It might be irrational but a lot of working class people feel that way. Why do you want to take away or reduce something so many men enjoy?
They are not to blame for those who behave badly and the England team are a group of mostly working class men who worked extremely hard as children to get where they are now. Your hatred says a lot about your bigotry imo.

When you live in poor countries and you see the kids paying with nothing on their feet and having the time of their lives - you get it.

RaininSummer · 03/07/2026 10:50

I was disgusted hearing what the England manager said. He needs to butt out of parental decisions and also not be so dismissive of schools and how the kids will be after that late night.

Have you actually heard the press conference with your own ears or are you just basing your opinion on a few headlines?

Because I suspect the latter.

Thomas Tuchel was ASKED by a journalist to give a message to parents who had children who wanted to stay up.

His reply was light-hearted and tongue in cheek. Context matters.

what do you say when all the police have to attend protests? Especially the pro Palestine ones?

What has a pre planned and organised march have to do with the police criticising the late timing of this announcement?

Weird to shoehorn that into a football thread.

I say the protestors who need policing detract from their cause as much as football idiots detract from the game.

So protestors are idiots too?
