Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

No. I have no qualms about being the bad guy and I told mine before the tournament started there was a hard limit of finished by midnight, school night or not, extra time and penalties or not, and not to even ask about something that starts at 1am. They can watch whatever passes for highlights in the morning.

I think the England manager publicly encouraging parents to “send an excuse note” (presumably lie they’re sick), in a culture where a significant percentage of parents already don’t prioritise school attendance, is irresponsible. I think Tuchel should confine his public opinions to football matters instead of suggesting school is less important than watching England struggle through a last 16 match.

I also feel sorry for the teachers and classmates of some of these kids, who if they do make it into school will be tired, grumpy and unpleasant to be around.

You’re reading far too much into a throw away comment.
Parents who prioritise attendance aren’t going to suddenly going to change their values because of a casual comment made by the England manager. Likewise a family who doesn’t value attendance aren’t waiting for him to give permission. They’ll keep them off regardless.

It’s ridiculous how serious people are taking his comments.

Our school has just sent a lovely email out giving parents a choice of start times on Monday. No big deal or threats of punishment. Just pick whether you’ll bring them in for the normal time or a dedicated later start.

I was disgusted hearing what the England manager said. He needs to butt out of parental decisions and also not be so dismissive of schools and how the kids will be after that late night.

Disgusted 😂😂
Bloody hell, you realise he’s not making parental decisions don’t you? You still get to choose what you do with your own children.

Also, it’s really nice to see the scenes of genuine jubilation and joy.

Which you won't see on Monday morning from anyone English.

You may see some next year when the Women's World Cup takes place.

Why football? - why not all this hysteria about rugby, athletics, netball, hockey? - it is madness. They are just kicking a ball around for goodness' sake.
I shall be glad when England's team get knocked out and sanity can resume.

I won't be glad, I am just realistic that the men's football team won't get any further in the tournament, and enjoy watching the French, Spanish and any other country with a team that is better at present.

IonianNerveGrip · 03/07/2026 11:05

I'm really excited for the women's next year. But not as excited as for 2035 when it'll be held here!

Nutmuncher · 03/07/2026 11:08

I can’t stand it personally but it seems to bring a lot of joy to people so let them be.

Ponoka7 · 03/07/2026 11:16

A lot of schools aren't doing much, especially year 6. My GC school is showing the match on Monday morning for year 4 and above. There were people off when Torvil and Dean won the Olympics. It's our national game and the bonding over it might do us all some good.

MickyMoonshine · 03/07/2026 11:07

Definitely! I was lucky enough to attend some Euros games in 2022, which was a great experience. A world cup should be even better.

If we were being brutally honest, Africa is excelling at sport. Europe adds in the technical details needed.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 03/07/2026 11:28

For kids, I think a 6am viewing makes sense. It would be helpful for the broadcaster to have a fully cued up viewing ready to go after the match - HT skipped, all ready to go.

In medieval times, about one in three days was a religious holiday. The Protestant work ethic BS really did ruin it for the rest of us.

Anononony · 03/07/2026 11:34

We live next door to a pub who will be open for the match, so while we won't watch it we will know when England score 🤣

Our primary school is chill and have said its fine for our youngest to come in late if he is kept awake, the high school probably won't be as cool about it so we'll have to put the fan in his room and hope he doesn't get woken up. Tbf they're both good sleepers so hopefully it'll be quiet enough before kick off then they'll sleep through!

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

Edited

Schools are not allowed to routinely demand doctor’s notes for illness.

The Department for Education makes it clear that parental confirmation is enough, and families should not be told to get medical appointments just to prove a child is sick.

If a school has genuine doubt, they can ask for general medical evidence, but that does not mean a GP letter. GP practices also do not provide sick notes for schoolchildren.

Crunchymum · 03/07/2026 11:44

My football mad 11yo night owl hasn't even asked. Even she knows her limits.

It will be recorded and she can get up early on Monday and watch it if she wants.

It's utter nonsense expecting schools (and Dr's and even the government - there were some threads about making Monday 6th a BH) to facilitate this.

At least if they win unlikely then the next match is at a much more reasonable hour.

I left school nearly 50 years ago. Even then we started next year's curriculum after the exams were finished and before the end of term. And schools were much more relaxed, and under much less scrutiny, those days.

I don't teach in England, though...and we've got summer break by now. (And would I start next year's syllabus before the summer break? Fuck no. I only found out what classes I'm actually teaching the day before we broke up. I'm sorting out and adapting next year's syllabus to match my classes. I want them to be excited about the new units,...not approach them with..."ah, same old shit...I've forgotten half of this over the summer".)

Besides, when I went to school myself, we didn't start the following year's syllabus, either. We just finished the year and then started the new stuff after the break. There was no need to rush. There was also nobody getting all hung up about kids missing one day of school.

MrsMurphyIWish · 03/07/2026 11:52

DH and the DC's don't support England (they support their own national team) but we are all massive football fans and even they admit that England winning would be a joy to see. That said, the DC's have only stayed up to midnight and DS (12) hasn't made it to the end of a late match and just slept on the sofa all night. I think the comment was made tongue in cheek and, as a teacher, I'll be hoping for a very quiet day Monday!

plasticplate · 03/07/2026 12:09

Pubs open to 5am probably means fewer problems on the street in the middle of the night.

There are hysterics about other sports such as rugby, athletics etc! When the Olympics or commonwealth games are on it's wall to wall coverage. Ditto rugby. Not netball nor hockey, true. Incredibly boring to watch.

You do know this the world cup so hysterics are normal?? It's the same in every other country not just England.

thisfilmisboring123 · 03/07/2026 12:23

Why do people ask things like, ‘why only for football’ And, ‘why not for the women as well’ as if it’s some sort of conundrum?

Mens football is just more popular - it’s that simple.

If you don’t watch or like it, fine- no one is forcing anyone to do anything.

BackToLurk · 03/07/2026 12:44

Tuchel's comment was tongue in cheek. Move on.

There was no need imo to say the pubs could open until 5 am. Responsible pubs (like my local) had already looked at the fixtures, applied for and got TENs for the dates and times that England may have been playing, outside the already extended hours. They are doing a fully ticketed, regulated over 18s event. I haven't seen any restrictions for the extensions, maybe there are some, but potentially this could be a shitshow.

But this situation is absolutely one where parents have to take responsibility, and parent. Ie, put their own boundaries in place. Whatever any third party calls for, is irrelevant. The parent has the final say. A parent who allows their child to do so, is one who probably doesn’t have many boundaries, and this would be one of many poor parenting choices they probably make.

It's one day at the end of term during what looks likely to be another heatwave. How much study is going on anyway?

I agree children should be in school regularly, we never had term time holidays, and I'd be sending mine (now adults) in, but I'd have let them stay up if thay wanted.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 03/07/2026 14:20

Most pubs will not stay open. My local pub starts chucking people out at 9.30. People in the middle of their meal or drinks are given a plastic cup and told to take the drinks outside and finish them off at the tables outside. That's not going to change for one night,
