Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

What pisses me off is that this level of commitment/excitement/hysteria seems to be reserved for men's football.
I don't remember anything comparable for women's football events, or men's tennis, or athletics (either sex), or rugby (either sex).
It feels like being compelled to celebrate. There's a touch of Borat about it – 'Stay Up, Get Pissed, Watch Football, Make Benefit Glorious Nation of England'.

In our house and in my group of friends we absolutely do show the same level of excitement for the women’s team.

It’s because people have been used to watch men play football for decades. I am sure women’s football will also reach that level of excitement.

It's really not exhausting. It's fun! They're going home, they're going home, they're going, the pre-Madonnas are going home!

Sweetie. You need to see a doctor. You keep repeating yourself. Off you toddle and take your meds.

How is this unlawful? The school has every right to ban dc from activities if they think they are skiving.
You don't have to get a Dr's note, if your dc are genuinely ill then it wouldn't be hard to prove it.
Skipping school for a bloody sport is daft and sets a bad example to kids, what would your employer say if you did the same and said you couldn't come in because you stayed up all night watching football?

How are you getting from what was written that they don't need to get a doctor's note? The initial post about the school said they'll require one, there was no suggestion that any other proof would be acceptable and no basis to presume it. That's the problem.

Great. But I don't know what your point is in telling me that; obviously it's not the same as the team manager making a national proclamation about kids bunking off school, or a national decision to change pub opening times.

Yes, because women's football was systemically suppressed for much of the twentieth century.
We also don't make a national celebration on this level about women competing in the Olympics, or gymnastics, or rugby, or tennis.

IonianNerveGrip · 03/07/2026 09:53

I think men's football is likely the biggest single sport in terms of followers still, but there aren't a lot of alternative examples of such sports events taking place in the middle of the night on a weekday during the school year. It just doesn't happen that often. The England women have been in 3 major finals in the last 4 years, all of which were held at weekend during our daytime and one of which also resulted in an extension of normal pub opening hours because it was early.

But in Spain they do and it doesn’t harm the kids.

my friend married a Spanish woman and she insisted the kids had an extra meal around 9 - 10pm - from weaning age.
It had a special word and everything - can't remember it. Kids always exhausted. They started school at normal (UK) times and didn't siesta. It was odd. She couldn't work out why they were falling behind at school and crying all the time.

There was no need for Sarina Wiegman to do so as the games were played during the day

There were calls for a bank holiday after both their Euro victories.

They're going home, they're going home they're going, Englands going home!

No need to get grumpy it's only millionaires kicking a ball around.

The English are so arrogant they haven't bothered to prepare for playing at altitude!

Surely if the had prepared for it they would have been called arrogant as that would have meant they assumed they would get through this far

Because you’re making assumptions and for some reason you’re getting irate at people wanting to watch and celebrate their national football team.

The team manager has made a throw away comment and people are acting like he has the authority to make people keep their kids up late. It’s ridiculous.

I’m pleased the pubs have been given extended licenses. I hope they’re busy. All the pubs I know are struggling so anything that helps them is a good thing. I also think watching it in a pub could be a good laugh. I remember working in pubs during the Japan/S Korea tournament - it was an experience to be there at 6am.

If you don’t want to join in there is a very easy solution. Don’t go to the pub and don’t stay up late to watch the match.

Shuffletoesxtreme · 03/07/2026 10:01

We’re going to get absolutely rinsed - it’s Mexico at home the Azteca, 2000m above sea level! - so no way am I having kids who haven’t slept having to watch their team get unceremoniously dumped out of the World Cup.

HelenaWilson · 03/07/2026 10:03

The initial post about the school said they'll require one

If parents were claiming they were absent due to sickness.

The point being that they would not be sick, everyone would know they were not sick, so if parents were keeping them off school they should be honest about the reason. Or just send them in.

Monty36 · 03/07/2026 10:17

Anyone living near a pub will not get much sleep. Hope they are not a nurse etc.
5am seems very long. I wonder if there was pressure from breweries for this ?
But I think Tuchel doesn’t expect England to win in Mexico. He is already talking about how hard it will be due to altitude. Which it will be.
The issue then will be if the previously boozed up fans in pubs deteriorates into mayhem because they lose. Fights breaking out etc.

It is almost the summer holidays. What are they going to learn for those weeks? Chill out.

3 weeks left until hols at our state primary school. They get 2 weeks at spring bank half term so finish later for summer hols.

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

I know I keep going on about the sicknote thing on this thread but it does tickle me with school’s holier than thou attitude towards attendance, yet allow one of my kids to miss a full year of education due to ridiculous isolations and suspensions when all they needed was support for underlying SEN issues, had similar issues with my other DS too at the same school too. So I know exactly where I would tell their school to shove it if they ever asked me for a Drs note for one day off, they don’t have the right to complain about his attendance.

Not all pubs will be open. Some won't have a big screen. Some won't have the sort of clientele that will want to stay up all night to watch football. Some won't have the staff or want to pay whatever overtime rates it will take to get them to come in. Some landlords just won't want to.

NewPhotos · 03/07/2026 10:28

I’ve said to my yr 8 son he can sleep in and miss the first period or two. It’s the last week of term for his school and he is passionate about football. He has 99% attendance and is doing well. I think he’ll be ok.

Isabella70 · 03/07/2026 10:31

Fuzzypinetree · 03/07/2026 07:06

Goodness...
What an overreaction. So you have tired children for one day...or (better option) they stay home one day to get some sleep. It's hardly a big deal.
I don't get why English schools are always so hellbent on creating issues for themselves.

Our secondary didn't do much work in the final 3 weeks. The fact that it was about 40 degrees was a major contributing factor. We also had sports day and trips and stuff like that going on as well, though.

I left school nearly 50 years ago. Even then we started next year's curriculum after the exams were finished and before the end of term. And schools were much more relaxed, and under much less scrutiny, those days.

SweetBaklava · 03/07/2026 10:37

I’ll let my teens stay up if they want to (they probably won’t as they think England are going to get walloped) but they’ll be going to school at the usual time. They can sleep it off when they get home.

Raindropskeepfallingon · 03/07/2026 10:39

Livelovebehappy · 03/07/2026 08:50

But youre the parent? You have final say. Is it a case of you having to say the word 'no' and be the bad guy because the English manager has suggested they watch?

No. I have no qualms about being the bad guy and I told mine before the tournament started there was a hard limit of finished by midnight, school night or not, extra time and penalties or not, and not to even ask about something that starts at 1am. They can watch whatever passes for highlights in the morning.

I think the England manager publicly encouraging parents to “send an excuse note” (presumably lie they’re sick), in a culture where a significant percentage of parents already don’t prioritise school attendance, is irresponsible. I think Tuchel should confine his public opinions to football matters instead of suggesting school is less important than watching England struggle through a last 16 match.

I also feel sorry for the teachers and classmates of some of these kids, who if they do make it into school will be tired, grumpy and unpleasant to be around.

Mischance · 03/07/2026 10:40

Why football? - why not all this hysteria about rugby, athletics, netball, hockey? - it is madness. They are just kicking a ball around for goodness' sake.
I shall be glad when England's team get knocked out and sanity can resume.

It's a bad point.

Because the school won't know whether they're genuinely sick or not, so if they're going to have this policy they'd have to require it of everyone. But GPs do not have to provide sick notes in that situation. They're requiring something that won't be available. You tried to get round this by saying kids who are really sick will be able to provide other proof instead, but again, there's no indication that will be accepted.

Whether or not you think parents should be keeping kids off for the football is a different point to whether requiring evidence that even genuinely sick kids won't be able to provide is a shit idea. It is.

RaininSummer · 03/07/2026 10:50

I was disgusted hearing what the England manager said. He needs to butt out of parental decisions and also not be so dismissive of schools and how the kids will be after that late night.
