Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 03/07/2026 08:39

I might ‘almost’ understand this if it were the final…but this isn’t even close! It’s ridiculous to encourage children to stay up ALL NIGHT for any reason…but this is just bonkers!

This is unlawful, and I would be quick to bring this to their attention. It’s maddening that schools think they have the authority to threaten things like this with no legal basis. Even just to have parents ring to ask for a doctors note to be inevitably refused is a waste NHS time and resources.

How is this unlawful? The school has every right to ban dc from activities if they think they are skiving.
You don't have to get a Dr's note, if your dc are genuinely ill then it wouldn't be hard to prove it.
Skipping school for a bloody sport is daft and sets a bad example to kids, what would your employer say if you did the same and said you couldn't come in because you stayed up all night watching football?

Summeriscumin · 03/07/2026 08:41

Football seems to aspire to a status beyond where a sport should be.
It's only a game, don't let people pretend it has some great importance.

They're going home, they're going home they're going, Englands going home!

No need to get grumpy it's only millionaires kicking a ball around.

The English are so arrogant they haven't bothered to prepare for playing at altitude!

So pleased that you are au fait with the training plans!

Floppyearedlab · 02/07/2026 21:54

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

While I’m not a fan of football at all this is just so unnecessary. Lots of people talking about how excited their kids are about the game and there you are revelling in the prospect of them all being disappointed. Honestly have to say it is a rather pathetic look.

I know most people would like their own team or one they feel some level of affinity for to win but I will never understand the joy in someone else losing. It doesn’t seem like a recipe for a content existence whether it’s about sports results or anything else

I agree but let's be honest England are not likely to win.
That's not me being goady, it's just the truth.
Overtired, underslept children who are also going to be disappointed.
Some for adults.

If England were likely to win, that would tip the scales towards staying up.

Megifer · 03/07/2026 08:45

😂 oh no the England manager has said let the kids stay off <wrings hands>

Gloriia · 03/07/2026 08:29

Bet loads of kids have skived off early for holidays anyway.

There’s 3 weeks left of school in most areas of England (lucky Leicestershire schools only have a week 😍).

There’s been no ‘skiving off’ in my school!

LakieLady · 03/07/2026 08:50

howdoidoitalone · 03/07/2026 07:08

If you’re not up, it won’t affect you surely? Get some earplugs and an eye mask and sleep through. I’ve never known a bunch of people be so uptight about something that’s just a bit of fun

I've already dug out my earplugs specially for the occasion.

Neither of my immediate neighbours appear to be into football, but there's a family across the road who are very into it and very loud in their support.

Livelovebehappy · 03/07/2026 08:50

Raindropskeepfallingon · 02/07/2026 21:59

Tuchel was out of order and irresponsible. It’s a last 16 match not the final. There will be many many more opportunities to watch England’s mediocre performances at major tournaments and his comment that England needed children’s support was laughable. A match that doesn’t even start until 1am is not a bit of fun staying up a bit late, it’s a sleepless night and recipe for miserable grumpy children for a couple of days afterwards.

But youre the parent? You have final say. Is it a case of you having to say the word 'no' and be the bad guy because the English manager has suggested they watch?

I tend to agree it’s unlikely and will be honest that I’ve said no to staying up. My kids are 9/11 and have shedloads on (including an 8am
start for summer show rehearsals on Monday) so would be far too wrecked to function if up half the night. That said when it’s one game anything can happen and if a family have this as a passion then it’s a nice thing to do together even if it ends in disappointment.

I’m not reading 11 pages of this, so it may have already been pointed out …..

He did not just say that children should be allowed up to watch and then miss school. He was asked by a reporter about that and answered the questions

Most reporting cut out the details, he was asked for a message to parents who’s children want to stay up and trying to get them to sleep, his answer was to just let them and write a note for the school

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckg40qedq57o

From the posts I’ve read it would appear that a few parents have the common belief that it their children want to stay up and are allowed to stay up that many will fall asleep anyway

Two young England fans drapped in a ST George's cross cheer as they watch the Three Lions play on tv.

England v Mexico: How parents and schools are preparing for the World Cup match

England's must-win match against Mexico kicks off at 01:00 BST on Monday - disco naps and spoiler-free recaps may be needed.

Scottish perchance?

I thought the exact same! It it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then its a duck (a Scot!)......

Boolabus · 03/07/2026 08:58

I remember the 90s in Ireland when the Irish team were trying to qualify for their first world cup and schools and businesses often closed so people could watch matches or close early so people could get home (to the pubs) to watch them, honestly people need to seriously lighten up, the world won't end if a number of kids miss a few hours of school. I don't think schools should close Monday morning as some will have no interest but I think for those absent a note from parents saying their child caught a serious case of the world cupitis bug should suffice.

HelenaWilson · 03/07/2026 08:59

Parents should decide if their kids can afford a morning off school.

They can decide to keep them off school. They just can't say they're sick when they're not.

Football seems to aspire to a status beyond where a sport should be.
It's only a game, don't let people pretend it has some great importance.

I already quoted Bill Shankly earlier in the thread....

Probably not, but I’m Scottish 😀

It doesn't matter! Can we not all enjoy a bit of hope and lighthearted feelings for once. We'll all cope with the disappointment and aftermath obviously. We'll follow Scoltand's example <runs>.

Mischance · 03/07/2026 09:19

It's all quite quite mad! What is it about football that causes people to go nuts? I find it utterly mind boggling... it is a game ... just a silly game. The England team will either win or lose. Life goes on. It's not even the final ... its just a passing match.

PistachioTiramisu · 03/07/2026 09:19

I can't imagine anything so unpleasant as being in a pub half the night watching a boring football match!

You sound like one of those weirdo ‘football twitter’ incels that love to pipe up with the “anyone but England” bs.

How tragic 🤣
Mexico don’t need you. They have their own nation’s support. Stay in your lane.

The match finishes at 3am doesnt it?

Spanish kids dont stay up until then, they tend to eat as families around 9ihs or a bit earlier for young kids and then would be in bed by about 11ish or so.

Having lived in Spain for a few years, I saw many small kids up around 11 pm on the weekends.

Yes match finishes at 3am. But it’s one day. For me no different from bringing babies or very young kids on long haul flights.

What pisses me off is that this level of commitment/excitement/hysteria seems to be reserved for men's football.
I don't remember anything comparable for women's football events, or men's tennis, or athletics (either sex), or rugby (either sex).
It feels like being compelled to celebrate. There's a touch of Borat about it – 'Stay Up, Get Pissed, Watch Football, Make Benefit Glorious Nation of England'.
