To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Bet you are a bundle of joy at work.

Or I just understand the realities of being a small business owner and not having an infinite pot of money with which to pay staff. We do need them to work and make the company money in order to be able to afford to pay for things such as annual leave allowance and bank holiday allowance and extra ones just thrown in do make a huge difference to that money pot.

MyPurpleHeart · 02/07/2026 08:40

Its not the final babe, just the last 16! 😂

Trust me, in future years very few people are going to remember one quarter final, particularly one that we lose.

This isn't a quarter final.

And everyone remembers the Hand of God match and that was a quarter final match that England lost.

Wow - what an entitled attitude.

Guessing you're the sort that makes sure you take all your sick leave days regardless of your health

luckylavender · 02/07/2026 08:58

Very bad for business

Nolongera · 02/07/2026 09:02

No and I am an England fan, it's not that big a deal for us.

We will go out anyway. We will stay up for it the struggle the next day.

It would make no difference. No private businesses in Scotland took their "bank holiday". If employers are giving the minimum holiday entitlement they don't need to add another day just because a "bank holiday" is announced.

A small number of public sector employees got their "bank holiday" - every tax payer in Scotland, England and Wales paid for that.

Wheelz46 · 02/07/2026 09:22

Pretty much most businesses open on a bank holiday anyway so what would it achieve?

Can I have bank holidays off to watch the Tour de France which starts this weekend then? And a fortnight for the Olympics in 2028 too?

And Eurovision. And the women's World Cup and women's Tour de France etc.

It's a fair point about the Women's world cup.

I'd suggest a bank holiday if either the men's or women's team gets to the final.

More chance with the women's I suspect

No wonder this country’s on its knees. And I’m a massive football fan.

Sartre · 02/07/2026 09:34

Or just don’t watch it and go to sleep at a normal time? Bank holiday if we get to the final, which we almost definitely won’t. They’re useless without Harry Kane.

Bit harsh, we'd be useless without Bellingham or Rice too

It's not just a football match. It's a cultural event, a milestone that will be remembered for many years. England's last match in the stadium was the famous "Hand of God" match with Maradona.

Oh don't be so ridiculous. Grow up!

There is no way a group of men kicking a ball around is a "cultural event" 🙄 it's a sports match a large portion of the country don't give a shit about.

lovecotswoldsliving · 02/07/2026 05:55

Who paid for the Scottish one then?
I don’t think we should get a bank holiday, but why is it that no one complained when Scotland did?

Plenty of people complained about the cost. It cost NHS Scotland £60m alone and the team are already out along with the manager.

DaphneduM · 02/07/2026 09:58

I love your description of it as a 'cultural event'. You and I must have very differing views on what represents culture.

GimmieABreakOr3 · 02/07/2026 09:59

Maybe if they win!

It is a cultural event, albeit one you're not interested in and that's OK.

It's not worthy of a bank holiday though.

It'd be nice to have more bank holidays, but I think a Bank Holiday to watch England lose to Mexico is a bit of a waste tbh.

Agreed, and not even to watch, but a bank holiday because your a bit sleepy from staying up late to watch England lose to Mexico. Probably better to go into work and have a bit of distraction I think.

They really really don't, you seem to be confusing "football fans old enough to have been watching the world cup in 1986" and "everyone"

Easy mistake but your suggestion is still stupid

Totally agree. Art too, it’s just a load of grown adults painting pictures. Pathetic. About time they grew up and did something useful with themselves, them and the useful idiots gawping at their scrawl.

What’s your idea of a cultural event?
One that can match the billions raised in revenue for the hospitality industry?
One that appeals to every corner of the globe, both in rich and poor countries?
One that unites the countries more than anything else?
Where people who have nothing can find joy?
Waiting……

Maybe you are just too priveleged to have an understanding of how football is in the blood of many. Going to a book launch, sipping wine, does not.

Shoxfordian · 02/07/2026 11:56

Reading books and sipping wine is in my blood as much as any football fan loves their team. We all like what we like
