To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Who paid for the Scottish one then?
I don’t think we should get a bank holiday, but why is it that no one complained when Scotland did?

Almost everyone complained except the SNP idiots.

A cultural event? Football and culture do not belong in the same sentence. Football fans no nothing about culture, mostly being drunken hooligans.

How very funny.

I love football. Live and breathe it. You can find me down at Wembley for pretty much every England game there is.

I also love getting lost in art galleries, exploring museums and reading.

It must be fun to be so ignorant.

Shoxfordian · 02/07/2026 06:49

No, Scotland are out anyway so what's the point of all that excitement over nothing? I don't think they should have had a bank holiday for football - its a few men kicking a ball about

JohnnieFedora · 02/07/2026 06:54

sanityisamyth · 01/07/2026 20:57

Really?! Overpaid pricks kicking a ball around a field warrants the whole country to grind to a halt?

To be fair, they give their world cup match fees to charity.

welshgirl2025 · 02/07/2026 06:57

No. Save it for when they win the world cup!!

Grammarnut · 02/07/2026 07:15

I think a Bank Holiday is always a good idea. Boost for the hospitality industry as well.

Meetmeinlove · 02/07/2026 07:22

Given the stats linking England football and domestic violence rising when they play/ lose, it seems like a fucking terrible idea to encourage an extra free day off for drinking and football

JohnnieFedora · 02/07/2026 07:25

Maaaaaaybe if they got to the final and it happened on a Monday.... But nah. Not this early in the tournament.

Until you can't get the day off, have to find childcare, have to pay employees extra wages for the day, and extra days holiday and give time off in lieu of they have Mondays off etc

I notice you expect pubs and bars etc to be open on this BH that you get to enjoy 🤔🤔

LilyBunch25 · 02/07/2026 07:35

Good grief what next 🙈

What a ridiculous generalisation.

AndyBurnhamIsATwerp · 02/07/2026 08:02

Oh give over.

BathersOnTheLine · 02/07/2026 08:02

YABU. It's just football.

I suggest you look up “culture” in a dictionary. I’m sure you can do that, what with you being so intellectually superior.

MsSquiz · 02/07/2026 08:04

You realise not everyone “gets the day off” even when it’s a bank holiday, don’t you? Or do you want to just close down the country for a day?

ovals · 02/07/2026 08:13

I’d never say no to a bank holiday OP. I don’t get a kick out of being a miserable twat either. Might be linked.

ThirdStorm · 02/07/2026 08:21

The cost of extra bank holidays on this country is huge, 8 each year is enough.

anon12345anon · 01/07/2026 23:11

Yanbu.....

If Scotland get a bh for it, of course England should.
Won't happen though because everyone seems to hate England 🤷

United kingdom 🇬🇧 should be the same..... one country gets a day off, every country should have the same..... not really sure how you can argue against it 🤔

People saying well Scotland haven't qualified for years, well England haven't won for years either......

Hard hat on..... I know this is controversial 😬😕

Scotland made its own decision. It's not a reason why every other country in the UK has to follow suit.

What extra bank holidays? The only one I can remember recently was the coronation, which was expensive for other reasons.

Men who act like idiots when watching football are idiots full stop, you can't blame football.

Wimbledon is on in the daytime and early evening. The Ashes lasts many days. This is just one day. If England progress all their other matches will be on at reasonable hours. This Mexico game is a special case, it definitely warrants a Bank Holiday.

How can a quarter final match merit a Bank Holiday, just because it takes place during our night time?

If people are that desperate to watch it, they should take a day out of their holiday allowance. If they can't do that, tough.

OonaStubbs · 02/07/2026 08:25

We have 2 bank holidays for Christmas and 2 for Easter and a lot more people support England at football than regularly go to church.

Mexico's game yesterday was delayed by 1 hour due to storms.

If that happens again it won't kick off until 2am, then with extra time and penalties it could last until almost 5am. Then people will be so excited they won't be able to sleep.

It is ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances. So a bank holiday is pretty much a necessity.

Did you miss the bit where it's not compulsory to watch the match?

CaesarAugusta · 02/07/2026 08:26

OonaStubbs · 01/07/2026 23:32

It's not just a football match. It's a cultural event, a milestone that will be remembered for many years. England's last match in the stadium was the famous "Hand of God" match with Maradona.

Trust me, in future years very few people are going to remember one quarter final, particularly one that we lose.

Almost nobody in Scotland save NHS and Scottish government civil servants had the day off. It was widely ignored.
