To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Take a holiday if you want the day off.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/07/2026 12:11

No! It’s far too early in the competition to be calling for bank holidays.

My children won’t be getting kept off school either

Take a holiday if you want the day off.

Exactly - there’s already a mechanism for having days off for things that are important to you.

If you don’t think it merits one of your AL days it doesn’t merit a bank holiday.

I'm Scottish and a football fan and I thought the Scotland bank holiday was ridiculous. Utterly unnecessary, particularly as the game was on a saturday night/sunday morning anyway - how does that affect Monday working??

I wasn't off and nor was anyone I know. The vast majority of the country ignored it, and the small number who didn't caused chaos for no reason. Our GP surgery was closed - didn't affect me on that date but it will have caused problems for some. Some schools closed whilst others didn't, so some parents had to scrabble for leave or take unpaid time, and some kids were pissed off that they had to go to school while their mates down the road didn't.

Qualifying after so many years was a big event and I could have gotten onboard with it if the holiday had been announced on a random date, with plenty of notice, to celebrate the achievement, rather than tying the holiday to a specific game.

I'd also be on board with England having an additional holiday if they win the championship, or even get to the final. But not because a random game in the last 16 happens to be late at night on a work day.

RhosynCymru · 02/07/2026 12:33

God no! I hate football and due to some of the sessional work I do as part of my job I lose money on bank holidays as the venues shut so I can’t run them and end up out of pocket every bank holiday as it is. And all for an enforced day off that isn’t convenient to me, particularly as I don’t want to spend it hearing of nothing else but football.

Owly11 · 02/07/2026 12:39

Absolutely we should. Football is a religion and this is a religious holiday.

Iloveeverycat · 02/07/2026 13:14

A lot of people work on a normal bank holiday so won't make any difference.

OonaStubbs · 02/07/2026 08:53

This isn't a quarter final.

And everyone remembers the Hand of God match and that was a quarter final match that England lost.

There is your answer. It's not even a QF. You're way off with this idea.

insomniacalways · 02/07/2026 13:25

N. I Hate football and bank holidays apply to a small percentage of workers anyway. Generally, those pretty fairly compensated and in secure roles. No employer has to give them and it just means public transport that essential workers need suddenly grinds to a halt . Shop workers, production etc will still have to be in work as would I

insomniacalways · 02/07/2026 13:28

Oh and those saying the kids should have a day off are probably those who just lost their minds when the school closed in the Heatwave. If people really want the day off, they can book it as annual leave. I'll be in bed or watch Netflix either way I could still get up from staying up that late

Vartden · 02/07/2026 13:31

Why this sport? Why not others?
Nonsensical idea.

I don’t need a bank holiday, but as you are Scottish, you won’t have any say in it. So you don’t need to worry about supporting it or not….

Hopefully all the students will be kept off by parents on Monday and we can have a lovely day!

Reading books and sipping wine is in my blood as much as any football fan loves their team. We all like what we like

Ha! I can sip wine and watch the football!

Wakemeuuuup · 02/07/2026 14:04

England didn't get an extra bank holiday in the year than the women won the euros for the 2nd time in a row and there women won the rugby world cup.

Why the hell would there be a bank holiday because the men reach a round of 16 and the match is at an awkward time

Endorewitch · 02/07/2026 14:28

OonaStubbs · 01/07/2026 23:12

Men who act like idiots when watching football are idiots full stop, you can't blame football.

Wimbledon is on in the daytime and early evening. The Ashes lasts many days. This is just one day. If England progress all their other matches will be on at reasonable hours. This Mexico game is a special case, it definitely warrants a Bank Holiday.

No it doesnt. Those who are not interested in football ,outnumber rhose who are.
It isnt special. Not the final.
And bad for the economy which is in a pretty bad way anyhow.

VaxMerstappen · 02/07/2026 14:37

Hopefully not. It's just football. It isn't that important.

You can sip wine and read a book when watching some England games…. you don’t miss much!

OonaStubbs · 02/07/2026 15:46

Over 26 million watched the game against DR Congo. That's a great many people.

We watched it and haven't had a TV licence for six years. Watyagonnado?

Come on Mexico.
There’s always one…

Come on Mexico!

Or two.

ReflectingPool · 02/07/2026 16:49

I think what’s more boring is everyone trying to pretend they’re fun and unique because they don’t like football

I'm not unique. None of my friends are football fans.

Settlersa · 02/07/2026 17:00

I don't like football or any sport come to that, I don't think I'm unique, there are many of us.
