To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Handing out Bank Holidays is just the public sector handing out other people's money all over again, depriving businesses of a productive day and expecting them to pay their non-workers.

For those whose employment contract states "30 days including BH/statutory days" its just forcing them to use up holiday allowance on a day they wouldn't choose.

And, to do it because of a bloody game of football.... words fail me

Wow vote is very different to I expected. I think that’s a great idea

Catroo · 01/07/2026 23:48

Absolutely not, why drive the country into more debt??
It's not even the final

Me too! Bunch of miserable wankers. At least the kids would get a day off school. Some people have to work bank holidays, and that's a shame for them, but don't be dicks for the rest of us.

No-one is stopping you staying up late to watch it and then using a day of AL for a day off on Monday.

It doesn't affect me, we're off on Mondays, just feel sorry for those at work

Why? If they're that bothered about it then they can either stay up late and deal with the tiredness or use a day of leave. It's a random World Cup match, it's not even a final and we've not even won a trophy. It doesn't merit shutting down the whole country.

Zenbra · 02/07/2026 00:18

It's obvious you don't run a business with employees. As a small business owner I don't expect to be paying my employees for a bank holiday to enable them to maybe watch a football match. If it means that much to them, they can take a day out of their paid holiday allowance.

court18 · 02/07/2026 00:21

The general estimate for a bank holiday is around £2bn in loss to GDP. Who’s paying for it OP? As I don’t see anyone keen to cut the welfare or public services to fund it. Or shall we shake the magic money tree?

A lot of public transport does not run on a bank holiday Not great optics on your part that you dont give a shit that the supermarket workers who work in the supermarkets (where you will buy your cheap booze for the match no doubt) will have to pay out more of their wages to go in by taxi.

If they can't deal with watching sport in the middle of the night and then going to work as usual the next day then I feel sorry for them too. The average person could do it easily - I know, I've done it myself more than once - so these people you feel sorry for must be ill.

Mexico's game yesterday was delayed by 1 hour due to storms.

If that happens again it won't kick off until 2am, then with extra time and penalties it could last until almost 5am. Then people will be so excited they won't be able to sleep.

It is ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances. So a bank holiday is pretty much a necessity.

Orrrrr they could watch the highlights and find out the score when they wake up. No impact on sleep and no ridiculous day off needed.

OonaStubbs · 01/07/2026 23:32

It's not just a football match. It's a cultural event, a milestone that will be remembered for many years. England's last match in the stadium was the famous "Hand of God" match with Maradona.

A cultural event? Football and culture do not belong in the same sentence. Football fans no nothing about culture, mostly being drunken hooligans.

GordonRamsey · 02/07/2026 04:51

Well we didn't get a Bank Holiday when Luke Litter and Luke Humphries won the PDC World Cup of Darts earlier in June, nor when Tim Hunt won the 2026 English Tiddlywinks Association (ETwA) National Singles Championship, so I don't see why we should start bandying Bank Holidays about now.

Especially, when I read recently (on Mumsnet of all places) that footballers are just self-centered, grossly overpaid, narcissistic fellows just kicking a ball of air about.

Shoxfordian · 02/07/2026 04:56

I love a day off as much as the next person but I don't agree - its not even the final on sunday, and football just isn’t that important, find out the results when you wake up if you can't stay up for it

I can't stand football.

I do however like NFL. So can I have a bank holiday to watch the Superbowl?

Ignorant. It must be awful being so bitter.

For a football game? Don't be ridiculous.

LivingTheDreamish · 02/07/2026 05:49

It's only the round of 16 and England will probably lose.

wrinklycactus · 02/07/2026 05:53

Where I live there is one bus a week…
So nobody relies on public transport.

Who paid for the Scottish one then?
I don’t think we should get a bank holiday, but why is it that no one complained when Scotland did?
