To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Be nice for the kids to have a late start to school or a day off though

CanOnlyBeMyself · 01/07/2026 23:12

I presume you’re not self-employed?

Why? Don't get a day off for Wimbledon, the Ashes etc. It's just football, boring horrible football that makes some men even bigger idiots than they already are.

Men who act like idiots when watching football are idiots full stop, you can't blame football.

Wimbledon is on in the daytime and early evening. The Ashes lasts many days. This is just one day. If England progress all their other matches will be on at reasonable hours. This Mexico game is a special case, it definitely warrants a Bank Holiday.

I don’t think a BH is necessary for a game. If we win then yes pls!

Choice4567 · 01/07/2026 23:13

Absolutely not. Why should I lose a days pay because other people want to watch football?

DrCoconut · 01/07/2026 23:13

If it's at 1am it will be finished by school/work time surely? People will just have to plan around their lack of sleep like the rest of us do if we want to pursue our interests at awkward times.

Mexico's game yesterday was delayed by 1 hour due to storms.

If that happens again it won't kick off until 2am, then with extra time and penalties it could last until almost 5am. Then people will be so excited they won't be able to sleep.

It is ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances. So a bank holiday is pretty much a necessity.

Err no. I'd rather have a bank holiday to celebrate something worth celebrating.

It will be long finished by school time though? With the current obsession with attendance and the shit that SEND parents get about it I would actually make a complaint if my kids were given time off for people to watch football. It used to happen but would be in very poor taste now.

OonaStubbs · 01/07/2026 23:22

I can remember us all being taken into the hall at school to watch a football match on TV. I can't remember what match it was,

I expect people to work because I want to be paid! If they choose to watch football it’s on them to manage their tiredness.

i don’t want to watch it and don’t want to lose wages from a forced bank holiday

Oh fuck off. A necessity? Staying up late to watch the game is a choice and so people should not be forced to lose out on a day's work or wages. If you want to stay up and will be too tired to work then that's what annual leave is for.

They'd better get the pro plus and red bull out then. No sympathy I'm afraid. Book annual leave if you want to watch sports instead of go to work.

Ah yet another cost for the small business owner to shoulder.
Absolutely not.

Nourishinghandcream · 01/07/2026 21:08

Absolutely absurd suggestion and hopefully has no standing IRL whatsoever.
All that cost & disruption just so a few people can watch a bag of wind being kicked around.
Bad enough the competition is on BBC, why can't these minority pass times be put on pay to view platforms?

What would you normally be watching on mainstream free to air TV at 1am?

LastoneYawning · 01/07/2026 23:28

Can I have bank holidays to watch the Glastonbury coverage? What about the tennis?

Mens football is just a sport like any other. Just a hobby like any other. Yes it’s popular and people get get passionate about it. But not all people.

Having the choice would be nice though. I can’t imagine a room of overtired kids who have been up till 3am Will get much done.

TheDenimPoet · 01/07/2026 23:31

Don't be daft. We can manage with less sleep than normal for one night.

No it's not a cost for small businesses to cover. As long as their employees are getting the minimum statutory holidays small businesses in England can, as all businesses in Scotland did, ignore it.

The cost in Scotland was borne entirely by the public sector employers, ultimately by all taxpayers in Scotland and because of the Barnet Formula, taxpayers in England too.

OonaStubbs · 01/07/2026 23:32

It's not just a football match. It's a cultural event, a milestone that will be remembered for many years. England's last match in the stadium was the famous "Hand of God" match with Maradona.

If it’s that important to you, take annual leave. Your hobby is not my problem. Mens football has dominated for too long. It’s just a sport. It’s just a game. It doesn’t matter. It’s just fun. No lives are at risk. Nothing terrible will happen if you miss it.

It's not a cultural event. It's 22 men kicking a ball, it happens every 4 years and then you have Euros as well. It's a big game but in the grand scheme of things, it's still a game.

Glastonbury is a cultural event. Wimbledon too. What about Women’s football. Will you suggest the same.

It simply doesn’t matter. It’s just fun.

You are being ridiculous.

just book a day off.
