To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Get a grip! I live in the southern hemisphere and spent half my youth getting up in the middle of the night to watch sport on the other side of the world, along with many others. Somehow we all managed to function at work the next day.

Silverbirchleaf · 01/07/2026 22:13

No, we don’t need a bank holiday. Take annual leave if you want to sleep in.

RubyFatball · 01/07/2026 22:13

I want the week off to watch Badminton Horse Trials.

Occasionalsnaccident · 01/07/2026 22:18

I believe it’s on the cards for a win but completely unwarranted at this stage

scalt · 01/07/2026 21:39

No. There are too many bank holidays already, and because I’m self employed, they always cost me.

Yes this!

Many people neither get paid or accrue leave when it’s a BH including us self employed people. Adding another random one in isn’t ok.

Most people wouldn’t be asking for a BH if they didn’t get paid for it.

Livpool · 01/07/2026 22:20

England and France are my teams but YABU. I will be surprised if we beat Mexico - won their last 4 games. If we win the World Cup, yes, if not then no.

Occasionalsnaccident · 01/07/2026 22:20

Hasten to add that I gave my team an early finish to get ready today, but that’s an hour not a whole day, and I think the only one that’s at a fairly practical time

Whitesapphire · 01/07/2026 22:22

I think we should because Scotland got one. I’ve got lucky with this match though by virtue of being a shift worker, working till 9pm Sunday then off Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 01/07/2026 22:23

I can’t wait for it to all be over and normality to resume myself.

Brightbluesomething · 01/07/2026 20:23

That’s not going to happen. Just book Monday morning off like the rest of us if you’re watching the match.
There’d only be a bank holiday if we win the whole thing. Given our performances I’m always hopeful but it’s not likely.

So you would be OK if your child's teacher took the morning of instead of baby sitting your child?

Endorewitch · 01/07/2026 22:30

Ridiculous post. Not even the final.
Think of the damage done to the economy.
Would essential workers also have BH?Just stupid

They obviously mean if you have the option to book the morning off.

EasternStandard · 01/07/2026 22:32

No thanks. Maybe if we win the whole thing.

heyjudena · 01/07/2026 22:32

YANBU. It doesn’t come around often and it would be a nice thing for all of us

Probably mitigated by the number of people out on the piss for the afternoon beforehand to be honest!

WingsTingle · 01/07/2026 22:34

I remember reading from the Jubilee that an additional bank holiday cost around £2.4billion in lost GDP - so no, I don’t think it would be ‘nice’ or sensible!

sanityisamyth · 01/07/2026 22:35

I’ve never understood why there’s sports news on the radio. If people were interested they’d watch the sport or find out the result. Very few people give a shit! Maybe this is a good reason to have it broadcast.

Sporter · 01/07/2026 22:37

I'm worried about the amount of children in my class that will be allowed to watch it. They are 9 and 10. Monday will be awful...

user1497787065 · 01/07/2026 22:37

Another day staff would expect to be paid for not working. Absolutely not.

Mansionscoldandgrey · 01/07/2026 22:38

Next year's World Worm Charming Championship is on June 26, which gives us plenty of time to lobby for a bank holiday 🪱

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 01/07/2026 22:38

I’m expecting a lot of sudden illness from the kids at the secondary school I work at on Monday morning!
Schools could open late to accommodate but then we’d get the ‘those lazy teachers can open late but I can’t take Billy to Tenerife for a fortnight in term time’ (cos that’s the same….)

ClairDeLaLune · 01/07/2026 22:38

MaCheCazzo · 01/07/2026 20:58

I had a really nice poo this morning. Would you all like a Bank Holiday tomorrow?

Grin

I’d rather look at that than watch England play football 😂

Also better than watching England 😂

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 01/07/2026 22:40

Yes. Absolutely! If I have to celebrate the pope getting new pants for an extra bank holiday - you can count me in!

RaininSummer · 01/07/2026 22:40

Ridiculous idea. We can't all suggest bank holidays are added in with no notice because we fancy a late night.
