To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Because of the way various devolution settlements work - England and Wales bank holidays are decided together.

May not be that fussed on the footie.. but as a Welsh person I could get on board with an extra bank holiday.

Though practically speaking, this is often way neither England or Wales get extra bank holidays for sporting fixtures unless it is a whole team GB deal.

I finish at 4.30 and the traffic today was INSANE. Every slip road had queues backing into the motorway.
Traffic is noticeably quieter tonight though

Hoping for an easy drive in after the game on Monday.

Im at work at 6am im going to try and get some sleep and set the alarm for the match and then try and get a couple more hours

RosePetals86 · 01/07/2026 21:37

It set the precedent when Scotland got a BH for qualifying, so OP isn’t unreasonable to suggest England should get a BH for getting through to the final 16…

scalt · 01/07/2026 21:39

No. There are too many bank holidays already, and because I’m self employed, they always cost me.

HRHCurmudgeon · 01/07/2026 21:39

I cannot wait for the bloody tournament to be over. It’s just a bloody sport. Why do some people seem to lose a grip on their sanity when it comes to football?

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 01/07/2026 21:42

Jesus, you’ve had quite the responses OP 🤣
Personally, I’d take another BH for absolutely any reason.

Yes, would be lovely, but it’s never going to be feasible to have a BH for any sporting event unfortunately.

Far too short notice.

Indeed. I prefer athletics! Can we have a BH if Keely Hodgkinson or Georgia Hunter Bell break the 800m world record 😄

TheHateIsNotGood · 01/07/2026 21:42

I only voted YABU because I think a BH should only be considered if England get to the Final. Which is probably unlikely given tonight's performance.

Anarchy99 · 01/07/2026 21:44

Don’t be ridiculous. It’s a game of football and fingers crossed we won’t be in it for much longer. It’s already causing disruption.

Lovingapeacefulgarden · 01/07/2026 21:44

Its a nice idea but as a Scot I can tell you most people in Scotland were still working despite the "public holidays". Schools we're still on, the councils carried on working, shops opened as usual etc. Most employers stayed open. Although the world got told we had a holiday in reality most people didn't.

Bloozie · 01/07/2026 21:49

I'm very tired and buckling under the pressure of a million responsibilities to a million people.

Yes yes to a bank holiday. Every Monday until Christmas should be a bank holiday. I need more free time to juggle everything.

YANBU. Make it so.

Go the football! Sports us a goal, lads!

ThisChirpyOpalCat · 01/07/2026 21:50

After the fuss made about Scotland supposedly getting it? No, I don’t think so.

NeverLookInTheMirror · 01/07/2026 21:54

There’s no such thing as a bank holiday anyway. Banks are open 365 days a year these days so it’s a load of bollocks.

I vote for banks being closed on bank holidays, as in, call centres etc.

CoastalCalm · 01/07/2026 21:54

Don’t be ridiculous they cost the country millions

Vaxtable · 01/07/2026 21:55

its a football match we don’t need a holiday for watching them

Jaxhog · 01/07/2026 21:55

Like the economy isn't in enough trouble, without having more days off work!

firstofallimadelight · 01/07/2026 21:57

Keep the kids off school??? Are you joking it’s nearly the 6 weeks as it is!

darksideofthetoon · 01/07/2026 21:58

MiddleAgedDread · 01/07/2026 20:17

The majority of people in Scotland didn’t get one!
only 6 out of 32 local authorities authorised it and apart from the NHS cos they aren’t already f*cked I don’t know anyone else who got the day off.

Just about to say this and I certainly never got it as work in the private sector.

But all good if England get one.

localnotail · 01/07/2026 21:59

Good idea but Mexico is going to pulverise our team. Not much to celebrate!

StasisMom · 01/07/2026 22:00

Drillsergeant · 01/07/2026 20:18

Why? I’ll just go to bed at 10pm, have a couple of hours, get up, watch it, and go back to bed. It’ll be fine.

Edited

Same, I’ll feel like shit the next day esp if they lose but it’s just one day.

WouldYouLikeToSwingOnAStar · 01/07/2026 22:08

Treetreetreetree · 01/07/2026 20:17

Come on Mexico.

There’s always one…🙄

Negroany · 01/07/2026 22:11

If it was the final, maybe. But it's only the quarters for goodness sake!

Also, bank holidays are not mandatory for employers to give. You get 28 days statutory leave, eight tend to be bank holidays if you have an office type job, so 20 you can decide for yourself. Another bank holiday that your co decides to observe and shut your workplace merely reduces the number of days you can choose to book to 19.

Mucholderlittlewiser · 01/07/2026 22:11

Most ridiculous thing I've heard today. And that includes the hour spent on bloody Twitter.

tinyspiny · 01/07/2026 22:12

Utterly ridiculous
